I always wanted to shoot ambient light. Never knew how until I came across this video. Thanks to you, tonight I believe I just shot my best event ever! Thank you so so so so so much! I'm impressed with the outcome of my photos but then again thanks to YOU!!!!!!
very helpful, you made things very clear for me when you began to explain dragging the shutter...i couldn't figure out how to show the color of the lights in the room. Thanks for the tips!
I've been searching for Event Photography tips all day, and your video was by FAR the most helpful! I especially appreciate the shutter dragging tip, to add some variety to my shots. Thanks!
@@DerrelHoShingPhotography can you explain to me the shutter speed which one is the best one to use 1/80 or 1/100 or 1/200 or 1/60 i'm just asking i'm playing around with it and getting better
Excellent tips man. I'm a photographer myself but I mostly shoot portraits and almost always use off-cam flash. I'll have to try doing that zoom in technique someday.
@@MissHitAllTheTime the camera freezes the motion in the moment the flash hits the subject. It acts like a second shutter. Thats basic flash photography.
Thank you. Whatever color your wall or ceiling is, that’s the color that will reflect on your subject. White is usually the best option, unless you have a creative look you’re going for
A few questions... 1 - What zoom do you usually use on your flash? Do you keep it the same or adjust it periodically? 2 - Do you use single-point AF when doing the panning/motion shots with rear curtain? How do you make sure you're focused where you'll have to be when the flash goes off? 3 - I saw that your ISO number changes from shot to shot. Are you shooting in Auto ISO, and if so, how do you ensure it doesn't over-expose the image with the flash? Thanks for the video!
Great tips...especially the dragging shutter and and moving the camera around ...and zooming while your shooting. I will definitely be trying this technique.
Bouncing off the ceiling/walls is what I do everyday for the past few years in clubs. What I can advise you is to NOT have your flash at 45 degrees, but actually lower. Here's why - at 45 degrees, you get what you can see in your photos, which is just huge shadows under people's eyelids and eyebrows. If you have your flash lower, it will fill their faces, so it's gonna feel like you shot with a big softbox behind you.
This is nice spot on direct tips and then showing the resulted pictures. Just got my Godox 350o for my G80/G85, have to test these tips right away. Thanks!
thank you for the tips! Solid video! Just picked up a camera and started off with motorcycles and diving into more low light photography and this def helps!
Great tips! Even from working with nightclubs and events for last 5 years I got some new insights. I think however you missed a major point. How you should think around composing the picture and how you should think about placing your subject. First off, try to place your subject in the dark - this way they will only be lit by your flash and you will avoid ghosting. Second, make sure you have a light-interesting background. This is even more important on a nightclub or concert as they tend to only have light from the stage direction and also.. black walls, turn your subjects so they have the stage/venue behind them. Lastly- try get some space between your subjects and people behind them so your flash only light up your subject (maybe more important for events and nightclubs and not so much private weddings).
@@randeepnagi5830 just try it. the flash is only for a tiny fraction of a second. the ambient light at 1/15 isn't long enough to expose the subjects. but the flash is so bright it can expose it properly in that time.

Derrel! This is Pri. About to get back on my photo game after a long break. Stalking your page now for inspiration...lol.....peace and blessings. You and the family are awesome!
First off RIP Papa Wu! As for shutter, it depends on the ambient light and how much of it you want in your image. The slower your shutter, the more ambient light will be in your shot. Faster shutter will kill the ambient light, which you don’t want
@@DerrelHoShingPhotography I was practicing yesterday with the Christmas tree lights doing some lightpainting .on the weekend im gunna do some portraits with it .really enjoy using flash. Thanks for your help 🙌🙌🙌🙌
If you want to introduce more ambient light why not to rise your iso little bit more instead of dragging the shutter? 1/15 is ok when you want to have some light trials but you'll have some motion blur in your other photos. Modern dslr are pretty good in high iso, even in the range of 3200-6400. Anyway, good video, thanks for posting

nice tuto. 100iso in parties ? is your flash in ttl or in manual mode according to estimated distance with subject ? i agree 1/25sec is nice to get ambiance, colors,... but there is often enough ambiant light to still get people moving when flash is off making the dancer blur, isn't it ?
