yes, you are absolutely right. I was just thinking the same when I came across your post. I totally feel, that he is under-appreciated or not as well known/ popular as many of the other great players... I truly love the Live Album, the silver one...
with songs such as 'A 100% Alcohol' and other great songs... I wish I had seen and heard him play live... He must have been a real force on stage... Keep listening to good ol' Mr. Rory Gallagher... I'm glad someone introduced me to him when I was still young learning to play this amazing instrument... I'm an all Fender Strat guy... I think I was lucky when I found a 2019 Mexican Fender Strat... this thingy plays so well, flows like juice, nice and sounds amazing

Sadly, this was my last interview with Rory before his untimely death.

There's a line of dialogue near the end of No Country For Old Men... "It's not just the one thing, Ed Tom... it's not just the one thing". When you think of some of the great players - Hendrix, Knopfler, Steve Miller, Albert Lee, Vince Gill, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jeff Beck, Clapton, etc. - all playing a Strat, set up the way they like it through the pedals and amps that give them the signature sound they like. Same guitar, completely different sounds in each case - that, boys and girls, is versatility.

Seems like the interviews are from the 80’s, the one with Sonny Curtis in the car was pretty cool. Because you could see out the window all the 80’s cars , brought back memories. Funny, the remarks Don Randall made about Leo Fender, not even wanting to credit him with any of the success of the company. His remarks around 11:00 - 12:30 , are less than flattering. Thanks to Mr. Leo Fender and his hard work and imagination, we have many amazing instruments and amps to play.

The reason Fender instruments were so expensive, was Don Randall. Leo sold his stuff to Randall (Fender Sales), then Randall doubled the price and wholesaled them to stores, who then doubled the price for retail sales. Al Jardine absolutely nailed it: Buddy Holly got Fender off the launch pad. I started playing on my brother's brand new 1960 Jazzmaster. But MY OWN first guitar, was a 1954 Stratocaster my dad gifted me on Christmas morning, 1963. And Holly was the reason I wanted a Stratocaster. And yeh. I did that same staring at that album. And yeh. HOLLY influenced -- directly and indirectly -- more musicians across history, than any other musician.
Flame maple is not as strong as plain maple. But neck thickness is the antidote for that twisting silliness.
    From my own autobiography:
    STRATOCASTERS: MY CONTINUED LOVE AFFAIR
"Some time passed after the Jazzmaster came home, and eventually a new hi-fi came along and then a few record albums started showing up. There was one in particular that I would just sit and stare at.
There it was, this guitar on the album cover. It must have been a guitar, but it sure didn't look like a guitar. What in the world was that thing? There it was, right next to that Gibson ES-225TD. Now, that looked like a guitar. But that other thing...that was not a guitar. My brother finally told me that that "that," was a "Stratocaster." Well, what on earth was a "Stratocaster"? It's that thing, he said. And that thing caught my eye, lit up my world and knocked me out like nothing else ever had. Even his real Jazzmaster, as new and shiny and great as it was, was not that thing in that little picture on that album cover.
Now, Buddy Holly must have known what guitar to buy, and what guitar to play. After all, he was way ahead of his time as a writer, singer and player. And he knew enough to choose a futuristic guitar that was equal to his talents--a three-pickupped tone machine that perfectly matched his multi-hickupped vocal style."
I REALLY appreciate the humility that Beck and Marvin and Gallagher and Cray, brought to this speak-out. And they are right. That neck is everything. That, from a player of 63+ years. Nicely done, folks ... nicely done.

Leo Fender being one sided was probably because he was so intelligent that he lived in his own head. He was probably the only person smart enough to understand what his designs were about. He was thinking about perfection because he was a true visionary artist just like Picasso, and he wanted his designs to be eternal. That's why he was able to get it right the first time. He done the same thing the inventor of the boomerang did. His guitars are like Hendrix songs in that they can never be improved upon. RIP Great Man.

Henry Mancini had a soldi body electric guitar in his full orchestra back in the 1960s and it was almost always a Fender Stratocatser with a Vox AC30 amplifier. There might also be a rhythm guitarist playing a Jazz box made by Gibson, Guild, USA made Epiphone, Stromberg, or D'Angelico. All the solo stuff was usually done with a Strat though. Enio Moricone also had a guitarist with a Stratocatser in his orchestral performances. Moricone's performances used a plethora of Fender amps too.

@facettekop4323 yep… I really wanted Buddy in there - and it took some hard work to locate him.
When I was a kid, I used to look at the photographs taken by Bob Perine for those early Fender catalogues… and Buddy looked so cool with a Strat or a Jazzmaster.
It was an honour for me personally to be invited to his home - but sad to find he didn’t even own any of the Fender guitars from all those years with the Lawrence Welk Orchestra.
Richard McDonald gave me a sunburst Strat to take to Buddy’s SoCal home to film … but we had to return it to Fender.
I was saddened that Fender didn’t recognise Buddy’s importance and gift him a Strat… but that’s how it goes.
His own recordings were right there with Les Paul virtuosity.
We remained friends until his death.

Ry's modifications to his Strats, with an Oahu lap steel pickup at the bridge and a Japanese Teisco gold-foil pickup at the neck, spurred a generation of players to build their own "Cooder-Casters". Those Valco-built lap steel pickups (also found on Supro and National lap steels) are amazing; very high output and excellent string definition even with lots of distortion (listen to David Lindley playing Mercury Blues for a taste). Lollar makes modern reissues of those pickups now so that you don't have to cannibalize a vintage lap steel in order to build a Cooder-Caster. There are several videos on RUclips about building and repairing Cooder-Casters, and a funny "Lost Guitars" video of David Lindley and Jackson Browne singing to Ry, asking him to return the Cooder-Caster he borrowed from Jackson!

I frankensteined a home made tele body(chambered meranti with maple top), mated it to a 24.75 scale neck and (currently) filtertrons in it. Wired to a 3 way switch and a volume pot. Done. It has been drilled, routed and battered over the years but it's still my main weapon of choice. It's not pretty bit it's mine

Excellent documentary: I wish someone would do a doc this good on the Telecaster, or on the Fender amps. If anybody does a doc about Telecasters, be sure to include Tab Benoit and his battered Tele Thinline; and perhaps Steve Morse and his Franken-Tele if he still.owns it. PS, two of my favorite Strat-spankers are Richard Thompson, and Sonny Landreth, sadly not seen here.

@bobhewitt5047 , yeah, I'm watching it now. Nice job; thanks! PS, Arlen Roth and Duke Levine would have been good additions to the Telecaster Documentary, as well as Tab Benoit. GE Smith is currently touring as part of the Telecaster Masters with Jim Weider; and Duke Levine with Club d'Elf. There's RUclips video of GE playing duets with David Lindley (a longtime personal favorite) on lap steel; Lindley said GE knows a lot about amps, something to bear in mind if you or anyone ever does a doc about amps. David only very rarely played a Telecaster, but was instrumental in helping Cooder acquire pickups for his Cooder-Caster, as noted in the Strat video. In another video, David said that JJ Cale beat him to a bucket of P-90's in a music store by just minutes! There's a RUclips video titled "The Lost Guitars" where David and Jackson Browne are singing about wanting Ry to return a Cooder-Caster borrowed from Jackson!
Interesting that Robert Cray never mentioned his liking for Magnatone amps; as an audio repair tech ( now retired), I've refurbished a half-dozen old Maggies. Neil Young likes them as well.
On the subject of Strats, there's a video of Sonny Landreth at the Pistoia Blues Festival where he's playing a fiery version of "Native Stepson" through a Strat and Marshall borrowed from Cray because none of Sonny's gear arrived at the festival. Even through somebody else's gear, Sonny still sounds like Sonny! As for me, I have a Mexican-made James Burton Tele (bought from a pawnshop for $125 several decades ago) that is a very good guitar, but unfortunately, when I play it, I still sound like myself! 😖

    • @goodun2974

The (British) Shadows with Hank Marvin were originally Ciff Richard's backing band. I wasn't aware that James Burton had a band of the same name but there was also a Chicago based blues rock band that called themselves the Shadows of Knight. PS, I have a late 1990's Mexican-made James Burton Tele in a weird sort of paisley-adjacent finish, its a very good guitar (cost me $125 with case from a pawn shop a couple decades ago! The nut was cracked and needed replacement so I was able to knock them down on the price a little).
