I'm really feeling my age on this one. It was a little before my time but at least I knew who the sandman was. He was a mythical creature that would sprinkle magic dust in your eyes while sleeping to ensure good dreams. It's folklore and I heard it a lot while growing up. It's a shame that so many people who are just finding this beautiful music have no idea what the song may be referencing. In the end, I guess it doesn't really matter, right? Just enjoy the music!
Yes, to lollipop. It’s a sweet song. 😉
They sing beautifully
Another vote for “Lollipop”!
When I was a kid back in the 70’s, I was given a bunch of old 45’s and “Lollipop” was one. I played it while pretending I was a radio DJ. It was a hot tune on my show😂
I have the same experience. Sweet childhood memories.
I agree! Lollipop was one of my first 45 RPM records!!!!
This is the music of my childhood and Soda Shop. My dad would whistle or sing in his deep bass voice. Memories.
If you wake up with gunk in your eyes, that was the Sandman visiting you.😅
No auto tune, pure talent!!
"Mr. Sandman" features in Back to the Future, if I recall. The Chantels "He's Gone" from 1958 arpeggiates the harmonies like that too.
One of the biggest hits of the 1950s.
You are awesome for taking us back memory lane. Kudos ❤
Liberace was a very famous pianist and entertainer at that time.
That is an understatement!
He was Elton John before there was an Elton John.
Could be a separate series of reaction videos of musicians who were good with captivating live audiences with their skills and personality.
Yes to Lollipop, and I would also recommend The Fleetwoods "Come Softly To Me". Both are featured in many movies/tv, and I really love both.
Archie Bleyer was the deep voice saying “Yes”. Pagliacci is referenced to having a lonely heart which comes from the opera Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo. Liberace (1919 - 1987) was an American pianist, singer, actor and flamboyant entertainer who was known for his wavy hair.
I thought the "sandman" in the song was voiced by Dick Clark???
I always thought it was Dick Clark, but you are correct:
Archie Bleyer, the founder of Cadence Records, is heard saying "Yes?" in the third verse of the song "Mr. Sandman" by The Chordettes. Bleyer also conducted the orchestra and provided a rhythmic beat with his knees for the recording.
FYI, per Wikipedia: What is the myth behind The Sandman?
The Sandman is a traditional character in many children's stories and books. In Scandinavian folklore, he is said to sprinkle sand or dust on or into the eyes of children at night to bring on sleep and dreams
Song was used in the classic horror movie Halloween II in 1981 (toward the end of the movie).
This song always gives me scary movie vibes.
If you’ve ever watched Back to the Future, this song was in it. Love it! 😍
My parents were in high school at the time. They commented a couple of times when this song came up that this was huge at the time. Though the chordettes weren't the only ones who had a hit with this song. Back then some songs might be in the top 20 at the same time by different groups. I guess copywriting songs worked slightly different back then. Some would rush to get a song out before someone else got the chance. Like recording at two in the morning on the spur of the moment.
Love your reaction;; you are HILARIOUS!
Seem to remember this song in the Joe Pesci film 8 heads in a duffel bag!
Four girls from Sheboygan!
When I was a kid, we were told the sandman was coming to sprinkle sand in our eyes to make us go to sleep and have good dreams, so... Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream makes sense. Also... Adam Sandler's nickname is Sandman.
Some of my favorite harmonizers of that era were the McGuire sisters.
@futuregenerationz, don't forget the Lennon Sisters.
I can imagine Ace's thought process when people recommend to him a song called "Lollipop." 🤣
If you're seeing a fifth Chordette added to a picture, that would be AI. Nature created only four.
A really great song, awesome group
Check out The McGuire Sisters "May You Always". Then check out the Lennon Sisters "May You Always". It's a quartet. This was written in 1954 so some of the references you are not going to recognize.
Check out the Maguire Sisters singing Sugartime
This is the music of my parents generation but while I didn't particularly like it as a kid, it's still kind of grabbed me? But when I got a bit older back into high school and started really trying to understand the music of my parents, suddenly it hit me how precise and important it was.
You could try Metallica Enter Sandman... try Moscow 1991 version...cheers.
Glow Worm by The Mills Brothers is another good way to start up your imagination. You should watch the lyric video as they're a trip and every stanza is better than the next.
That sounds like what it ISIS.It's on the playlist, not even in the favorite side of the pilot.I'll stop right question mark home along used it manningThat sounds like what it ISIS.It's on the playlist, not even in the favorite side of the pilot.I'll stop right question mark home alone news this management
It is like a Southern style, biscuit and gravy, a biscuit and gravy from my South bounder. You know what's gonna stick
We had this record on 78 rpm, which even at the time was old tech.
Hi Ace! Sandman refers to when you’re dreaming while sleeping.
Keep up the good work Ace!
The song starts with a bell chord where each singer comes in with her part. Those are hard to do and takes practice with the timing.
Lollipop and if you're going down this type of rabbit hole might I suggest : Flying Purple People Eater by Shep Wooley it's a funny novelty song ✌️❤️
I was never sure if the flying purple people eater was actually able to fly, was purple, and ate normal people...OR if it ate flying, purple, people.
@whyme7996 now that i think about you're right interesting question 🙃
*Sheb Wooley aka Ben Colder.
A good follow-up song would be Lillipop
Lollypop.
Lilypip
This isn't music from my generation; my parents were pretty young for this one. However, most people my age have probably heard this song. This one makes me think of a funny scene on "The Golden Girls," which was very popular when I was a kid. Watching the reaction also made me realize that the notion of the Sandman may be a dated one. There is a Canadian hotel chain called Sandman and most of their hotels are in Canada.
React to Celia Black and Burt Bacarach with the live recording of "Alfie".
If you like good music with minimal instruments, check out Peggy Lee's Fever. Just a bass player and a drum.
Mostly an acapella song.
How I remember this when I was young! I thought the Chordettes were magic. I waited for the ‘yes’ every time. I also knew at my kindergarten age who Liberace was. Everyone did. I loved this 45 rpm.
You should check out EARTHA KITT I WANT TO BE EVIL
sweet! I haven't seen that in years. Eartha could camp it!
@@whyme7996 I saw Eartha in concert in 1950s about1954 she was before Liberace
Flash back, Back to the future. right around the clock tower.
Mr. Sandman was the night visitor who put you to sleep, as if putting sand in your eyes. He makes your dreams come true, so to speak. They are not asking to be in a romance with Mr. Sandman, but are asking Mr. Sandman to send them a romance, a man that will make their dreams come true.
