Another good post. I was surprised how shallow those 4ms cases are. I didn't pay close attention when I ordered one. (I wish they'd made them so the back was removable) I used a small size 4ms case to house my Mordax Data module (scope) and its power convertor (. But even that module was too deep by an 1/8" and had to get creative. I power it using a USB phone charger Velcro'd to the back of the case that feeds a (+ -12 & +5vdc ) DC convertor. I like having it be portable vs mounted in a rack.
Thanks! 🙂 You must have gotten the original 4ms Pod which have about 33mm of depth? (I think initially they advertised an over optimistic depth of 35mm which caused some confusion and disappointment!) Those are indeed a challenge to find modules that will fit and I've done some crazy modifications to modules to force them to fit. (as I mentioned in my breakdown #11) The "X" series is deeper (50.8mm/2.00") but it sounds like you figured out a way to make the shallow original one work for you for a sweet little portable o'scope! 👏😎👍
My buddy pointed me to this because I am doing a similar small modular build with a Polivoks filter. Very similar concept of one little rack and a one purpose synth. I am using cigar boxes for my builds because I get them free from a friend. How do you power your little box? (sorry was in a hurry and skimmed your video) I am a real budget modular user and try to do everything as cheap as possible. Thanks!
Hi, a cigar box synth would be sweet! 😎👍 The 4ms Pod case I used in this video has a built in power supply board that converts +15v from an external power brick to the +-12v and +5v the modules might need. You could just use a 4 hp power supply module, but they are about $80 to $120 and with take up 4 hp of valuable space. If money is tight you could try using a Mean Well brand model GP25A13D-R1B power brick? They put out +-12v and +5v and are only $35! It plugs into AC power and then the output cable has a 5 pin DIN connector (like a MIDI cable) so you'd just need to mount a female 5 pin DIN connector to the back of your cigar box? I've used the +-15v version to power a couple different small 5U modular synth and they have worked fine if I didn't push them too hard. www.meanwell-web.com/en-gb/ac-dc-triple-output-desktop-industrial-adaptor-gp25a13d--r1b And you can get a small power distribution board kit from Synthrotek for $20 (along with other parts and kits you might be interested in?) store.synthrotek.com/Mini-Power-Distribution-Board-Kit_p_1062.html And if you haven't yet check out the ModWiggler synth forum for tons of good info, you might be particularly interested in the Eurorack and Tech DIY sub forums? modwiggler.com/forum/index.php Best of luck! 🙌
@@JohnLRice Thanks for the reply. The cheapest ready to use is the Behringer. I am now thinking of just expanding to a big long wood rack I can make myself. I used to fix TV station gear. I am done soldering forever. :P
@@griffithmorgan4966 Haha, I can relate! I used to be a computer programmer and it got to the point where I couldn't stand to try to use a computer to make music! 😂 Even though I've been retired for over a decade I still try to keep computer use to a minimum.
@@JohnLRice Yeah, avoid the thing which is work. Despite being very low budget on my synths I refuse to solder anything. I did get an assembled kit module not long ago that was almost all cold solders. It is just abysmal workmanship. Yet, it works.

Small but powerful modular, nice demonstration dear John 🙂
Thanks my friend! 🙂

@@griffithmorgan4966 Yeah, I've been shocked and disappointed by what sometimes passes for "professional work" in the modular synth world! 🤦♂🤷♂
