I have had a OCD lesion in my femur for about 7 years now. Played a lot of high impact sports growing up (football, baseball, basketball) and about two years ago while in high school, I had an MRI. Because my growth plate hadn't closed up yet the surgeon decided to wait a year or so before any operations. I was given a loading brace for when I snowboarded and did other physical activities. As I grew older my lesion got worse and worse, (eventually locking, sharp pain when I would bend my knee to my thigh, not being able to straighten my leg fully, and feel extremely unstable), I had yet another MRI which showed that the growth plate had closed and the lesion had not healed. I had micro-fracture surgery to stimulate blood flow and thus help heal the lesioned site about 4 weeks ago. A total of five holes were drilled and a small screw was placed into the center of the lesion site. I am currently doing P.T. and will be on crutches for two more weeks and then hopefully can start to weight bare as much as my body allows. Honestly the pain isn't the worst part of being of having an injury as an athlete, it is the reaction to that pain. Everyday is a constant struggle with negative thoughts flooding in; "I will always be in pain. I will never be able to be the athlete I aspire too. This won't get better". I am working hard to keep my head up, and am motivated to be the very active person I once was no matter how hard I will have to work. Staying disciplined on my PT exercises and thinking positively has helped so far. I know this was a long comment but I seriously hope it helps out to anyone who might be going through a similar experience.
Since I was only just turned 12 when I was diagnosed with it, I literally just had to sit out of anything for a year and a half because since I was so young we could just wait for my bone to grow. I was supposed to get surgery but luckly I didn’t which shocked me cause mine was like the worst case I had seen. So after those treacherous 18 months of nothingness I have come back and my knee is clicking and hurting again and just everything hurts because I don’t trust my legs I have developed things like plantar fasciitis and it’s really tough because I just have these depressing thoughts running through my mind at all times…
I had an OCD grade IV knee injury 10 years ago when I was 15 and I had to go under the knife. Sensations: Pain and knee locking when trying to walk. They did a mosaicoplasty and I was in crutches for about 4-5 months. Doing physical therapy 5x a week for about 12 months got me over this injury and start running again. Today, I still feel some pain in the knee on occasion and it's not the same as it was or as it is like my other good knee. This is a really traumatic injury especially for kids, you lose a lot of muscle mass and it's mentally draining. Whoever is going through this, just stick to your physical therapy and be patient. Speedy recovery!
4-5 months of crutches is brutal... my arm pits were almost raw after a few weeks of crutches. I found out I have an OCD that’s causing knee discomfort last year. I’m 31 now and wanted to look into survey to fix it. What was ur total time out from work?
@@victoryous1709 I was 15 so I was just a schoolboy. The crutches I used were the ones with the elbow support, not armpits. 4 months on crutches but I was really really cautious about it. It also depends of the severity of your injury, I had a loose body floating around blocking my knee and surgeon needed to fix it in place. If you're seeking for surgical treatment I'd say 2-3 months to get you back to normal daily activities not involved running. Just remember, minimize muscle loss, I can't stress that enough. @Chris Rerup My guess your son injury is not as severe and probably will recover in that time frame. The doctors detected it early. Mine was a loose body on the medial bottom part of the femur and they had to fix it in place. I still have no idea why it's giving me discomfort on occasion a decade later.
I had OCD surgery 11 years ago when I was 15, I had 1 loose piece and another falling off and the surgery just removed them. I had been doing all kinds of sports but after OCD happened & the surgery I never got back competitively. I would always have some pain and issues. When I was 21 I had so much trouble with my knee I got another MRI, however the surgeon didn’t think he could do anything more. It looked like what he expected. I’m happy to say now though at 26 it really isn’t a problem anymore. I’m very active at my job and do some running around with no issues. I had some sort of osteochondral lesion on my tibial plateau. Hurt myself playing basketball about 10 years ago. Stayed active for pretty much the whole last 10 years with being a carpenter and playing sports. There were specific motions and stances that I knew I should avoid and that was how I “overcame” the pain. It always hurt and would occasionally (1-3 times per day) give out or lock up. Usually when I had to hold a particular position it would lock up. Carrying heavy things would make it want to give way if I let my leg be all the way straight. As long as I kept it slightly bent I would be ok. Pretty dead center of my bone. Just did a second surgery 4 weeks ago. First surgery was supposed to stimulate blood flow and healing. Failed. This surgery was to drill a hole from the side and fill it with calcium phosphate (I think) and let it heal. The lesion was just below the cartilage and the doc said if I try to weight bare too soon I could damage the “bone cement”. Not sure if it worked yet or not. Had full range of motion within 3-4 days. On the second surgery. My first surgery actually had a meniscus repair in it too. And it took months to get full range of motion back.
Thanks for making these videos, Dr. Geier. I had surgery on my right knee in 2008. I had a micro fracture procedure along with a PVNS mass removed. The pvns was localized thankfully, so it hasn’t returned based on a recent mri a couple of months ago. However, my experience with micro fracture has been pretty bad. My knee has never felt good and now it’s in pretty bad shape. Went to see an ortho recently and he said I have OCD and need a donor / cartilage graft procedure. Will probably do that in a couple of months. Curious what your thoughts are on microfracture? My surgeon said he advises against it in all cases Bc it’s a temporary solution.
Had microfracture as well 7 years ago, knee never felt the same. Currently on a waiting list to get a graft. Goodluck on your surgery, hopefully it works out for both of us!
@@AJtheBillionaire Oh wow, I had microfracture surgery for my OCD lesion in my knee 7 years ago too. I have also never felt the same. At times it can even be hard to walk for long periods of time. I never knew that some doctors strongly recommended AGAINST it in all cases and considered it to be a temporary solution. I hope you get your graft and that it goes well.
I had this surgery in 2003; they tried the absorbable PINS and they fell out; then they tried the regular pins and they fell out. So they removed the piece and drilled further into the knee to see if the blood would heal it. I didn't go for the second surgery and tried to do physical therapy to see if that would heal it. Knee locked in during sprints two years later and i had to quit playing football instead of getting another surgery.
I am 15 and I got surgery 2 days ago and right now me knee hurts really bad lol what they did was fill the hole in with a different part of my bone that I don’t use on my knee which is at the top i think
I had constant dislocations in both knees, but my left was ultimately worse. At the beginning of last year (2017), My knee dislocated again, and it felt like something bashed against each other within my knee. That was painful! ouch. My doctor and everyone was 100% sure I was fine and was faking/overexaggerating even though they've been wrong every time something bad happens to my knee (e.g. In 2014, I had a major dislocation in my left knee again and it tore my meniscus, MPFL and chipped my patella. Again, the doctor thought after a while that my knee was fine and that I was faking it. My parents also thought that I was faking it as well). Anyways, I kept getting a really sharp pain in the side of my knee, that I actually couldn't walk very well on it. I begged and begged my mum to take me to a specialist for a third opinion. We finally found my OS and he looked at me concerned... "have you hit your knee anywhere recently?", "um, I don't remember, I've had many dislocations that feel like there's something bad happening". He just went, "you have dead bone.". My mum was so shocked. I kind of did a "ha, told you I wasn't faking it". We scheduled surgery for 10/10/2017, to get a tibial Tubercle transfer, MPFL reconstruction, lateral release and ofc, OCD drilling. It's been almost a year and it's still not clear. I'm getting really annoyed now because I can't dance still and I'm feeling so lost without doing anything. I'm still getting pain but my physio and mum... lucky me... you guessed it... don't believe me. Now to see my surgeon in 11 days and I' psyched as! lets hope it's good news. Don't know what will happen, but I'm sure I won't be cleared for sport. I don't know how to speed up this process!! argh
Yo, update: I just had my second surgery for OCD, for the same lesion. It never got better, it got progressively worse. I’ve just been told my knee pain will be chronic. I’m so over this, I just want it to be over. OCD is not fun at all, and has restricted me from so many things like running, and even some days at work. I’m hoping all will resolve eventually, but I’m post-op from 21/03/23 and losing faith tbh. Wishing everyone else more luck than me.
I have ocd in my right knee it been off and on since 2019 jr in high school and I finally got it checked out with and x ray and mri in July of 2024 going into my senior year of college. I play college football so I get one more year next season. In 2019 there was a day where i could walk because of the pain but i just thought it was from football. Then in spring of 2022 there was discomfort but didn’t want to say anything. Then in spring of 2024 it was the worst it ever been just very tight and when I stretched i could get relief but some time I couldn’t and it felt like my knee was stiff as heck. I’ve always been scared to do cleans and catch low bec I didn’t trust my right knee being strong enough. But back squats and front squats were fine. I can do pistol squats on my left leg and never my right. Just a lot of discomfort and Unsuitability. The doctor said the knee is unstable for any sports before the surgery. I get surgery in November.
I am horrified reading these comments. I’m 21 and I’m getting surgery this summer after getting my knee examined by a doctor. The thing is my knee has never hurt, it only occasionally locks up after long periods of inactivity. It almost feels like this won’t be worth it seeing how my recovery could take years for something that doesn’t really cause much of an issue. I hate this. I do not know what to do, I’m super active and I hit the gym at least 5 times a week. it literally feels like this surgery is going to keep me from doing what I look forward to every day.
Well i got mines today and to say it feels horrible after surgery i have to take pain peels every couple of hours and it will completly heal in 2-3 years also i have to use crutches for 8-12 weeks
My 16 year old daughter was just diagnosed with this. She is a dancer and her dream is to continue this in college. She has opportunities that are once in a lifetime that now I'm thinking she will not be able to do. I'm bawling reading all these posts. It sounds to me that this is a career killer. She's going to be devastated if she can't dance.
All your videos are very educational and helpful - thanks for helping the community on your own time...I wish you were here in Scottsdale/Phoenix area. I have surgery tomorrow for a osteochondritis dissecans repair on my right knee 2 cm X 1.5 cm; Male/47. I understand the various methods to repair and it matches what my Ortho Dr said. I was wondering if you would consider playing golf something that high impact on the knee or is high impact just considered things like running, basketball, jumping etc. I will of course be speaking with my Dr. because he understands my exact situation, but I would appreciate your "general perspective". Thanks in advance for your response.
I had a osteochondral lesion approximately ~ 1 cm on the right medial femoral condyle that was diagnosed with an MRI. My surgeon recommended debridement via knee arthroscopy that I had done about 6 months ago. I still have significant pain after treatment and difficulty performing the same activities that I used to (basketball, weight lifting etc..). Any recommendations?
@@paulom.5044 Hi Paulo. It's been a little over three years since I had the knee scope debridement, and honestly I have returned to almost all of my previous activities including weightlifting (squats/deadlifts) and even some cardio. The recovery process was definitely longer than I expected, but I have no regrets at all with the surgery. Before the surgery I would have pain and severe inflammation at the end of a work day just from standing. Those symptoms are now gone, and I am able to maintain a normal day without thinking about it (other than an occasional "click" at the knee joint when I flex my lower leg). I know I will never revert to a completely healthy knee, but I am overall glad I went through with the surgery.
Had surgery a month ago with an allograft from a donor, I had a loose fragment floating around too. Currently using 1 crutch to walk, PT is helping a lot. Bending is very difficult but getting better day by day

I’m eleven and I got surgery for ocd knee drilling at the end of may and then I was on crutches and a big brace for about 6 weeks before the surgery I was also on crutches for six weeks but no brace so three months of crutches then six weeks after surgery I got off crutches and a new brace and five weeks after that I didn’t need the brace and I still can’t run until September but right now I’m driving to physical therapy. Also my lesion in my knee was considered big but it wasn’t at bad as thought. The whole surgery was fine but the worst part was before and after because before I was nervous and hungry and after I was tired and had a headache but now when I think about surgery it wasn’t that bad
Hi Doctor, thank you for sharing! I am 46 years old. I had OCD of the left knee. On April 6th I had Surgery with the Cartilage Graft repair. I am a flooring installer and its been 3 months, my doctor cleared me to go back to work. I went to work Monday and when kneeling on my left knee after a few hours crawling around, it became real sore. Then did it Tuesday, made it halfway through the day and my left knee started swelling up that I am having a hard time bending it now, even after Icing and elevating. I am going to see my Doctor this Monday for them to look at it. When I was kneeling I felt sharp pain in the area my Cartilage repair was done, is it possible I might of damaged the graft kneeling on it and crawling on it for 8 hours?
@@KemikalReaktions Yes, it took another 3 months to recover. However, what I learned was I had to keep doing physical therapy because every 3 months my knee would start going out. So, its never gonna be the same. I tried running with it but was too nervous to run for any sort of distance. I just do Oliptical training now. How are you doing?
I am About to have OCD surgery in my right knee i have had one surgery done already where they took out the part of floating bone they said that would stop the pain when in fact it has become a lot worse i have been told the OCD is my last option before a whole new knee will be needed i have also been told that the leg below the knee joint needs to be straightened out and they plan on doing all this at the same time is this recommended or not im very confused by the information i can find online some say it should be done as 2 surgeries and some say it can be done all at the same time but will this not mean im out of action longer

Its a Donjoy brace kinda like the ones they give out after ACL surgery. I dont know how beneficial the brace is as he had a scope done.. why would they order this brace for something like this?

Pretty dead center of my bone. Just did a second surgery 4 weeks ago. First surgery was supposed to stimulate blood flow and healing. Failed.
This surgery was to drill a hole from the side and fill it with calcium phosphate (I think) and let it heal. The lesion was just below the cartilage and the doc said if I try to weight bare too soon I could damage the “bone cement”. Not sure if it worked yet or not.
Had full range of motion within 3-4 days. On the second surgery.
My first surgery actually had a meniscus repair in it too. And it took months to get full range of motion back.
how r u now? can u exercise?
How long would a cadaver repair ocd surgery last?
Hopefully a decade or more. There aren’t many studies past that point.
I went through the mosaicplasty..how long it's going to take for recovery
Thik hua kya apka
Any recommendations?
how r u now?
@@zoolzoko how many months did it take to recover ?
@@SantaBanta-xr4qn I was walking and returned to work after about 2-3 weeks. I was would say my full recovery was more like 6 months to a year.
Had surgery a month ago with an allograft from a donor, I had a loose fragment floating around too. Currently using 1 crutch to walk, PT is helping a lot. Bending is very difficult but getting better day by day
Hello friend
How are you
How do you feel right now ?
Did the OCD allograft help ?
I’m getting surgery tmmr :( my cartilage got ripped off and it pops out my knee ! Wish me luck
We got surgery on the same day bro, hope yours went well
Hi i just had the same
surgery on tuesday same thing happened with my cartilage it ripped of im so scared that ill never be able to be back where i was how are you now
I’m eleven and I got surgery for ocd knee drilling at the end of may and then I was on crutches and a big brace for about 6 weeks before the surgery I was also on crutches for six weeks but no brace so three months of crutches then six weeks after surgery I got off crutches and a new brace and five weeks after that I didn’t need the brace and I still can’t run until September but right now I’m driving to physical therapy. Also my lesion in my knee was considered big but it wasn’t at bad as thought. The whole surgery was fine but the worst part was before and after because before I was nervous and hungry and after I was tired and had a headache but now when I think about surgery it wasn’t that bad
how r u now?
How are you doing after three years? I hope that you are doing very well!
Hey bud. What ever happened with your knee? Is it doing better now?
I had sprain multiple times to my ankle joint . On MRI degenerative osteoarthritis at talonavicular joint and I m having moderate venous insufficiency in lower extrimities . Does venous insufficiency effects my ankle joint degenerative process? Does Microfracture of talonavicular joint for osteochondral defect cures my chronic pain at rt ankle? I'm 49 / female symptoms persist in since 2016 when I underwent for abdominal liposuction consequently developed venous insufficiency in lower limbs
I had the operation a couple years ago and ever since then (and before) my knee has crunched/clicked whenever I extend it. Is this normal?
had surgery March 15 to remove 5 loose bodies in the right knee. Now taking steps to find a doctor to fill the 3x2cm hole. Major concern is recovery time.
Matthew Daly howd it go man i had OCD lesion left knee inside top and am healing well, post op pain was surprisingly minimal!!🤘😆 it has only been 58 days! Aand i just started weight bearing and walking as tolerated! Good luck! Had a lot of loose bodies more than 5 and the biggest ones looked like a handfull of white cheese curds!
Hi doctor I’m a sixteen year old boy who was forced to stop playing sport because of OCD my doctor told me to stop everything and now I have been sore for 1 year now what do you recommend I should do to get back into playing sports again
I've had an operation to drill into the OCD in my knee about a year ago, and I'm still getting pain. Don't do anything! It will slowly go away. I just don't know how long it will take. That's why I'm here. I guess patience :)
@@louisemaaree wow you probably won’t read this but 2 years ago I got drilled into me knee and it didn’t do anything . I was 13 and my doctor recommended it and I stupidly agreed to it because I thought it would help the pain immediately
I have ocd of the knee and am on crutches for 6 weeks and if it does not get better I’ll have a full leg cast and if that don’t work I’ll have surgery any suggestions
I’m going to undergo an acl reconstruction surgery at the start of July would it be okay to go away at the end of July on a 3 week holiday
I have a knee lession on the end of my femur bone trochlea groove an have had athroscopic surgery chondroplasty removal of loose debris. Anyone ever have this done on the trochlea of the knee? Im missing cartilage from there and the doc wants to do OATS on the trochlea

Has anyone had surgery with donor?
I had ocd in my knee and have been out of sports for 3 months in a few days. I got surgery in October and I was wondering when you think I could get back to sports.
I did not tear any cartilage but the fracture was pretty big. If u responded or made a video that would make my confidence a lot higher thanks-Drew
Drew Rennell does the surgery hurt
I will have my CD surgery tomorrow, I play Volleyball and this was quite a shock. I hope I can get back to playing as soon as possible! How was your recovery?
My son had surgery almost a year ago. They removed the fragments and cartilage and he has a heavy duty brace to wear while playing sports. Im not sure how necessary the brace is but he seems to not have any problems. He is actively playing football and he seems to be struggling while wearing the brace i just wonder if he really has to wear the brace all the time or for the rest of his life. Its a Donjoy brace kinda like the ones they give out after ACL surgery. I dont know how beneficial the brace is as he had a scope done.. why would they order this brace for something like this?
I’m sorry, but I can’t legally answer medical questions and offer medical advice online. I have created thousands of articles and videos that discuss almost any musculoskeletal injury that should help you.
How long did it take for your son to recover? My son is 13 worried on how long it will take to recover as he plays several sports year around.
I'm youth umpire and I have OCD lesion, I'm a bit scared to go through surgery especially right knee and not sure how long I'll be out and not being able to run etc...
