Hi Anaik1, welcome to the channel. Its great software and the tutorials are getting a bit dated but I've begun the revisions, here's the third one, take a look, this is better. ruclips.net/video/IZ7R5C2kwqc/видео.html Click through to my RUclips channel home page and you'll see all the five revised tutorials and the rest.
Many thanks Arnold, this course of 16 tutorials should be the foundation stone for anyone who wants to progress in fusion 360. I am most grateful that I stumbled upon these lessons. Thanks again
Thank you very much for these videos. They're straightforward and easy to follow. I've used Creo and SolidWorks pretty extensively and some processes carry over but not all. It's great to see it all broken down into clear instructions that don't skip any steps.
Thanks Paul, I'm glad its helping. The tutorials are getting on a bit now and the revised ones are in the works. In the meantime this video points to some resources that I've put together which might help, see timestamp 2:38 ruclips.net/video/2W9R9j5YBG0/видео.html
Love the way you started this off I've been looking for a set of tutorials that work like my analog brain - I took several semesters of engineering drawing many moons ago in the pencil and paper, compass and triangles days. I've run through the first 3 episodes and I feel like I've made more progress with F360 than anything else I've looked at so far. Thanks!
What an amazing series. I've completed Part 3 of 16 and I can't believe I got to this point. Please continue your way of teaching. This has been a godsend. Thanks so much.
Much appreciate your tutorials. I am an AutoCAD 2d guy but am working with my 11 and 14 year old's to learn Fusion. They are using the tutorials also. We are enjoying!!! They are ahead of me on Tutorial 6 working to catch up. Thanks very much!!
Am in the learning stage and I discovered that after a few times watching the video and followed the drawing, I played the video with only sound while I was drawing. For me it helps alot!
Keep going Cogito, I've heard that the more senses you can engage with what you're learning the better and for you, sound is working now. BTW, I notice that you're looking at the older tutorial here, I'll give you the link to the updated playlist. I've got six of these revised now. ruclips.net/p/PLFCTgdiT5-kLBNvrkUNy63Gu1tWdRuKkr
I had tried Fusion 360 in the past but gave it up as too hard. Now I can come back with some confidence that I will learn something from your tutorials. I learnt TurboCAD the hard way... I struggled on my own ( NO tutorial help 20 years ago). Many thanks from a now contented Taswegian.
Keep going Clive, Fusion 360 does have its idiosyncrasies and it has a learning curve but its great software at a great price, especially the free version. What are your plans for Fusion when you get good at it? (You're not too far away. The King Island lighthouse is sometimes visible near here so you're just over the horizon.)
@@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 A liitle further over the horizon as we can't see the KI lighthouse ( we are in the Meander Valley) I was a paint chemist (until I retired 28 years ago) with wannabe leanings to model engineering, steam engines. Now I have found CNC and I would like to become somewhat profficient at that . I have seen F360 used in this context so here I am. CNC and steam somewhat marry.
Richard, the thought of using a track pad for CAD makes me shudder. I did enjoy experimenting with the first CAD program that was a success on the iPad (its called Onshape) but I never really used it; I couldn't wait to get back to my workstation with a good three button mouse and a large hi res monitor. The other big improvement for CAD is an additional spacemouse for the left hand but I haven't lashed out on one of those yet.
Hi Arnold thanks for this tutorial it's been excellent. I'm using the program to make parts for model railway items so it's certainly been fascinating. So many possibilities!
@@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 Absolutely yes! It's because a model manufacturer made a mess of the front so I'm looking to make a new part to fit onto it. Luckily I know someone who owns the real thing so once I can get the dimensions of it then I'll know the rest. Plus I know someone who has a 3D printer. I kind of did it in 3 parts, a gangway, a door and the outer cowl. Not bad after lesson 4 lol!
@@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 I'm a retired Mechanical Engineer and my original purposed was to do a layout for some storage cabinets in a small camper I'm thinking about buying. But now I may extend that to dust off my old 3D printer and make some prototype parts.
These are wonderful! Have you done one where you explain how to put a threaded hole in a structure? Would like to add an eye bolt to my project. Thanks
Yes Greg, I did a really quick demo of the most basic way to use the hole tool and put it on the Future Engineering Facebook page. You might need to scroll down a couple of posts. facebook.com/Futr.Engineering
Just a guess at this stage MarshallVisions, there's probably some stray constraint somewhere causing this problem. Don't stress, finish the part with that 60 dimension and move on. Its better to get as much of the overview through the 16 as you can, and then look to solving this kind of question. BTW if you can make a screencast or even a screen shot I might be able to spot the difficulty. You could post it to my Facebook page here:- facebook.com/Futr.Engineering/
@@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 Okay thanks! And thanks alot for making these tutorials. They are my favorite of the Fusion tutorials I've seen so far.
So as a content creator myself I really appreciate these. Trying to learn Fusion to 3D print for my hobby. I tried many RUclips vids before yours and it just didn’t click. I was ready to smash this pc. Although I feel I am very intuitive this was difficult. I am now up to pt 3 and like how you do this. I have learned a ton so far and my pc will live on thanks to u. Thanks
That's fantastic JPC! There will be more frustrations but keep pushing through, you'll get there, let me know if you have any problems, I can usually help.
For viewers in 2020 and beyond!!! The "Constraint" menu has been moved from the toolbar on the right, to a right-click menu. This includes tangent, coincident, and collinear operations. Happy modeling!
@@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 General design of some mechanical parts I need for a prototype and I will 3D print them. Hands down your lessons are the most sensible of ANY lessons, free or paid I have seen. Thank you!
Just getting back into drawing, I like your approach. I am having some issues wit the settings of 360. my sketch pallet does not have constraints in it and my upper window does not have the model button only design, render, animation, mgf and drawing
George, I think you're looking at the superseded version of these tutorials. I've upgraded the first five and number six is in the works now. Take a look at the playlist on the channel, here's the link ruclips.net/p/PLFCTgdiT5-kLBNvrkUNy63Gu1tWdRuKkr You'll find the old ones and the newer ones.
Thanks Richard, Zbrush is neat, I've looked at it and played with it but haven't found a real use for it myself. I've even seen haptic tools built for it. Maybe you could be that teacher given time.
Great to hear don, all parametric CAD works in basically the same way but with a different front end. You never waste your time so long as its parametric.
No Sylvain, you're onto me, it was supposed to be 30mm, I'm going senile. BTW its not the only error I've made that you will likely pick me up on. I'm planning on correcting this one and a few more when I produce new tutorials in the new user interface.
Robert, I have to admit that in the past I've been one of those unkind people given to making fun of Mac users but in an effort to prove that I'm reforming I found you some solutions here, try some of these. forums.autodesk.com/t5/fusion-360-support/macos-with-magic-mouse/td-p/7573827
I came back again to redraw #3 on my own, didn't take long to get stuck and had to follow along with the video. No big deal, getting to dimensions from the origin to a line for some reason took longer than a regular dimension but it finally worked as it should. One other thing is when I went to extrude it would not do it. I noticed that the 2 lines on each end, 10mm, were the only 2 lines that had not turned black like the rest of the drawing. After drawing new lines that didn't change anything the extrude worked. End results, finished the drawing and moved on.
@@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 Well Arnold you are a wonderful teacher, but it took a long time to figure out what you were saying every time you said press enter, I do were hearing aids and after going through some batteries, LOL, I heard it loud and clear. "Press Enter". I can't wait to get going on your other series and what they cover
Dear Arnold. thank you very much for the great tuturial. I learn from it and enjoy it. on the time 5:35 when I try to set the dimention, I get an error message that I can't do it because of the restrictions, and I can't continue. any help would be appreciated.
Nadav, usually if a dimension creates a conflict its because there is another one already nearby or a geometric constraint acting against it. Without being able to stand at your elbow to watch I can only suggest that you look for anything in your drawing that is different, if there is nothing that looks out of place, start over and go slowly and be watchful for anything that might be causing the error. If necessary go on with the next one and come back after a few more tutorials, a little bit of a break can make a difference when you are refreshed.
@@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 just to let you know that I got over the problem. I don't know what I did wrong. after I got it over I started two more time to know Im on it. so now Im back on the horse and continue with next lession. great stuff.
Thank you! so far so good, you explain it in such a clear way for the novice, however struggling with the curved line 1.11 /part 3 keep getting a freehand draw line rather thatn the curved line.. have fluked it a few times but not getting it ?? any advice you can offer on my covid learning curve project :)
You're welcome, Jacki, you won't be a novice for long. The curve is a neat trick but its really only a timesaver. Its possible to get the same result with arcs or circles and a bit of trimming. I'm sure that if you try it from time to time while you work through more tutorials a 'breakthrough' on this one will come.
I was able to complete the first two. Being very new and with the 2021 changes to Fusion 360 (free version) it is very difficult to keep up with you. I'm going to try a few other tutorials and swing back later
I have to admit you're right gregory, the tutorials are two years old now. Most people are using pause and rewind a lot. (So far I haven't heard of the Yt player wearing out). Did you see the resources I published to help with the UI changes? You can get to those by looking at this video at timestamp 2:38 here; ruclips.net/video/2W9R9j5YBG0/видео.html
Arnold... Functions are alien to my version here too. Due to my previous efforts, I can still accomplish them in various ways,. However, I do find it time consuming and highly distracting from trying to follow along. No fault of yours, but it was a big factor in my blunt-force decision to revert to my other software in my previous attempt to utilize Fusion 360 in a working commercial environment on my previous attempt, which I endured for a month before abandoning ship. I was able to generate code for a coule projects... but production had fallen into a tail-chasing vortex to zero...
So sorry to hear of your frustrations, my tutorials are sadly aging and they'll be revised asap. I wish I could help with the CAM but I rely on some friends for that.
Thank you for these. My biggest problem seems to be the planes. I am drawing on the XY but the drawing seems to be turned different when it comes time to extrude.
You're welcome, William. The goal of each sketch is to extrude a feature and with these examples getting the right plane doesn't matter much as long as you end up with the right shape. Is 'extrude' working OK?
You can use the little XYZ widget/spinner in the upper right to make sure you're 1) in the right plane and 2) viewing from the right angle. It's a nice little reference and has a home button if you get "lost." When doing the extrude, glance at the arrow along the line of the extrusion, and drag it in the opposite direction if necessary before executing the operation. Of course you could also do a negative value for your extrusion (ex, -50mm vs 50mm) and extrude backwards, as well, but that's not good practice and can get confusing. Hope it helps! It's possible to snap a surface of an object to a plane (or to another object, an edge, and a few other things), so if you're "in the wrong plane" you can easily move it about and get it oriented as you wish, but it's moot for these lessons.
Hi Arnold, loving the tutorials. My finished items end up on there side. On number 3, when you first selected the axis between red and green you had the Front view facing. My selected Top. So when I click Home at th end I my Front view is the underside of the unit.. What initial set up in Preferences have I got wrong?
I'm pleased to have you on the channel Keith. I did do a video about re-orienting your part if there is a need to, here it is; ruclips.net/video/2apwwAQgvbQ/видео.html There is also a video on my Preference settings where you can also download a PDF of all my settings for the time you're working through my tutorials, see here; ruclips.net/video/UVwJJvQR1fc/видео.html Anyway, there's a setting on the Preferences>General page where you can specify Z up like I have. If this doesn't solve your problem check out this video from Mechanical Advantage about how to change and re-set the home view; ruclips.net/video/0KZD4j6tL3Q/видео.html You'll soon be in complete control of this Keith, if you're paying attention at the level you clearly are, it will soon be your servant.
Exactly right Keith! Why? ...in a word, - ignorance. The basic tutorials series is now nearly three years old and I made them very soon after switching horses. I have taught the same material in all of the major CAD programs and I only delved into the Preferences of Fusion comparatively recently in order to answer questions like your own. Having no real interest in CAM back then, I was a bit blase about part orientation knowing that it is easily corrected in Fusion as well as in any specialised CAM software. Little did I suspect or anticipate the consternation that would cause to so many who are focused on CAM! So yes, you caught me however the revised tutorials which will begin to appear shortly are more carefully oriented from the get-go and the preferences I recommend will be the ones I publicly practice.
Thank you sir for the great work you are doing, I have learnt a lot so far. But the problem is that I can't download the drawing, it keeps on showing "fusion 360 RUclips basic PDF is in invalid format". Please I need a solution to that so I can download it for easy learning. Thank you Sir.
Hi Arnold Hope you are well and had as great an Xmas as covid allowed. Most of your tutorials are ok to follow - well done for that However, I have had a problem with this exercise that has driven me a little mad - haven't solved it but understand it a bit more now. Followed your instructions to the letter and when I go Finish Sketch, I don't get a true isometric view. I get a view where the part is flat on the red-green plane which is twisted at 45 degree. So when you extrude the part , it does so vertically from the plane. Doesn't stop you putting in the hole or the fillets but does make it difficult to spin the part to look at it. I think the problem is that the view I get is stuck in the red-green plane, but don't know how to change that. Interestingly, if I create the sketch in the Red-Blue or the Green-Blue planes, it works just fine (perhaps in the earlier exercises, that's what I did) Any thoughts? (I have checked that I changed the preferences that you mention in your UI Update video, but that didn't help)
Thanks Clem, Christmas was great here, its the symbol of all that motivates me and gives me a reason to get out of bed each day. COVID is nothing on all that. It sounds like you've done most of the tutorials? but you're coming back to this one which was a problem? but you've had success depending on which plane you chose for the original sketch? My understanding of your description of the problem is that you are ending up with a 2D isometric drawing on the red-green plane when you expect to see a 3D model. The purpose of this 3rd tutorial is simply to be one of a few that impress on your sub-conscious the workflow of sketch/feature, sketch/feature. If you have had any success in completing this model then you have achieved its purpose. As for taking control of the orientation of the model in 3D space, that is; in relation to the named planes, Clem, shelve it for later. You can most certainly delve in and understand this if you have the energy but I recommend that you complete the 16 tutorials as quickly as practically possible and move on to assemblies in the intermediate series of tutorials. You will naturally become more familiar with UI elements and details as you paint in the broad brush background. I need to provide the content on controlling orientation of models and will get to it eventually, in the meantime look up John Hackney's Yt channel and watch a few of his videos about the alignment tool. ruclips.net/video/87o99yDx1Ig/видео.html
@@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 Hi Arnold, thanks for the very prompt reply. Your understanding is correct - guess there is some setting I have that is different to your one. Happy to shelve this for later. Happy New Year to you and yours
Hi Arnold, I appreciate the effort you put into these videos. I'm following along....slowly. It seems I'm constantly battling my view - I may be using an updated version of con-fusion 360, but when I try to follow your axis I'm seemingly on the top or bottom, even if I (think) I'm selecting XY. Any suggestions or advice appreciated, thanks so much!
Thanks Gary, regarding your view, if you've been able to complete the part itself, the orientation doesn't matter for the 16 basic tutorials. However I understand that you may be very keen to get this right and so I've published my Preference settings just a couple of weeks ago, see here; ruclips.net/video/UVwJJvQR1fc/видео.html One to look out for is on the general page almost halfway down; Default modeling orientation. I keep mine on 'z up'. In future tutorials I'll be more particular about the choice of plane with for that first sketch. and I'm currently working on a video about four ways to re-orient your part. This will be published within a week or two.
@@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 many thanks. I'm "getting it done" but manhandling the views is frustrating, i'll check out your guide when I study tonight ;) i bought 3 tutorial series yet yours is the one I locked in on. thanks again!
I don't have Stop the Sketch, I have Save the Sketch. Is this from a recent revision? I poked around but didn't see how to print our own drawings when we're done. Thanks.
John, I've just opened up Fusion 360 in the current version and the words on the button to the far right of the toolbar are "Finish Sketch" not Stop the Sketch or Save the Sketch. My apologies for mixing that up. This #3 tutorial is from the original series made in 2018 and the UI update was in mid 2019. The revised version of part #1 is now published and the second one is in the works now. I think if you review the revised version of part #1 you'll see the answer to this difficulty. ruclips.net/video/LSRKJgTSS4c/видео.html After that I think you'll have the idea and all 16 can then be completed with that understanding. Regarding "how to print our own drawings when we're done", the 2D environment is in another workspace and I've done a video where I demonstrate the very basics of this topic. Here's the link to that one; ruclips.net/video/2IKvsZQd99I/видео.html
@@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 Thank you for showing us how to bring the sketch into a true engineering drawing. I assume the printing is in the Output on the right hand side? Sorry about being a pain, but ....
Hi Henry, that's good progress, again there is an updated version of this tutorial, the revisions go up to part #5 at this stage, number 6 is in the works but most people are able to follow the older ones now that you're familiar with the workflow and how just a few of the tools live in different locations since the UI update a few years back. Keep learning, its great software and worth the effort.
Thanks for making these (even thou they're old now compared to the interface which makes it quite hard to follow at times). I will point out that you did make a mistake in regards to dimensions compared to the drawing. The thickness is supposed to be 30mm. ;) Have a good one. :)
I have what may be an issue. On your screen you have on the upper right corner X,Y,Z with front shown but on mine I only see Z on top X to the left and front plane. That’s it. How can change it to be like yours? It makes a difference when I extrude and stuff. Thanks
Mauricio, if you can get the models done on the other planes please nestle for now. There are ways to control these things but if you can continue at all it would be better to worry about these issues later. Is this really a show stopper for you?
Hi Dense147, in the 16 basic tutorials you're seeing an older version, I made these in 2018. All the license versions are practically the same, there are some differences and I outline these here in another video. This comments app won't allow me to post the link however you can go to my Channel and search for the title "Download from Grabcad", go to the chapter "Fusion 360 Licenses" beginning at 2:45 I will update these 16 tutorials soon but in the meantime I've done a video titled "User Interface Update to the 16…" which you can find in the same playlist as the 16 basic ones. This will hopefully bridge the gap and get you started to where you can follow along.
Michael, take a look at my video in the same playlist titled "User Interface Update to the 16..." where I demonstrated changing two preferences, I think that will do the trick for you, let me know.
Thanks you, very informative video. Just one question, Should the depth of the part be 30.0mm not 60.0mm? The drawing I have shows 30.0mm. Not trying to find fault but thought you would want to know. Anyway, had a play around thinking how I could modify the part and initially I tried with sketching tools but that did not work so thought about it and then realised we need to modify the model and found the "Push/Pull" feature which allowed me to modify the part to 30.0mm.
You're right Paul, thanks and you're the first one to pick this one up in two years. At least as far as I can remember. I've noted this in my list of revisions to do.
Thanks Jack. there is a toolbar at the bottom of your screen in the middle and if you click on the second one from the right you'll see Layout Grid which you can check or uncheck. I've always found it distracting.
David, in the Design tab of the preferences there is one about half a dozen lines down the page "Auto look at sketch", please double check that one, its the one that governs this behaviour - and let me know. BTW did you see the revised version of this third tutorial? Click through to the channel page to see all the videos in this playlist.
I think your tutorials are excellent and am in the troes of going through them, but having difficulty in starting eqach time with selecting the face! I have the latest version of 360 and of course the tools are somewhat different to the older version! I find that when I select a face it does not do what you do so simply, ie when you select line and draw it is so simple, on my s[version the view stays isometric and i cannot get a plane view. If I then select the face, right or left etc the lines seem to be invisible . Any suggestions please. G
George, go to Preferences (click on your picture in the top right) then General, Design, then the 6th one down the list is called "Auto look at sketch". Tick that one which should help, let me know.
@@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 Thank you for your prompt response. when I try to open the dimension tool, nothing happens, or I'm told 'over constrained'! (I've tried from the drop-down menu, & the keyboard shortcut - 'd'.) & I cannot work out how to open the Sketch Palette, which sometimes opens, sometimes not. It's almost as if I'm using a slightly different (perhaps later version?) of the same program. There are other minor differences too! (I.e. the point of origin seems the other way around.)
Hi there Arnold, I have just finished all of your 16 Tutorials (plus all the new ones and extras), thank you for making it so much more understandable. As I don't have two screens, I used my wife's Laptop as the Player - worked a treat. After doing each one a few times, I was beginning to feel more confident, so I created a few relatively simple drawings. However, I have just spent a couple of hours trying to understand why the 2D Drawing consistently incorrectly dimensions a row of holes. I have checked the original Sketch, even Inspected it, and it shows the centre of the hole from the bottom edge as 20mm, but in the 2D Drawing it shows 20.5mm. This is really odd as it shows the overall width of the part is 125mm and it shows a distance of 105mm from the top edge. Any Ideas? By the way, it would be great if you could make a more in-depth Tutorial on creating 2D Drawings. Great Job from one of your cousins across the Tasman.
My cousin?! Well what a pleasant surprise! Hit me up - you will have seen my email address if you downloaded the 16 drawings or via the Future Engineering Facebook page. I'll get to the bottom of that drawings issue and I do have plenty of stuff planned for 2D drawings. Let's talk.
Hi Arnold, Greetings! Your videos are short and time saver. quick and easy to practice. I am sure i ll complete all 16 videos. In the drawing, the thickness is mentioned as 30, but in the video, u have kept it as 60! why?
This is often due to a setting in Preferences. You'll find a link to my video about setting Preferences if you look in the video description under the first revised video. And here:- ruclips.net/video/UVwJJvQR1fc/видео.html By the way, it looks like you're working through the older version of the 3rd tutorial here, there is a revised version of #3 here: ruclips.net/video/IZ7R5C2kwqc/видео.html
why will the dimension tool not appear when I select it, (or hit 'd')? How do I get the sketch palette to appear? Can I move objects, drawings & dimensions to different panels, sketches or bo dies? (Earlier Autocad products had 'layers', which I could turn on or off.)
Don I wonder if you missed the select button and hit the one right next to it which is labelled "Finish Sketch" That one will take you back to the isometric view. Just guessing...

@@200sxtony Good question, but if you're getting the part modelled you have achieved the purpose of the tutorial. Controlling the orientation and re-orienting your model is easy, I've just skipped it in favour of getting a running start at modelling. The next series, the intermediate playlist goes on to the basics of assemblies which also doesn't rely on part orientation. When we get to CAM it matters and we'll cover it there but if you have a thirst for knowledge, John Hackney has a few videos on the align tool which I think will satisfy you. ruclips.net/video/btMffh9yo2Y/видео.html
Jordy, let me just check off the obvious things first; when you place a dimension you get the blue focussed field, right? Just type the number you want. Second, its not about diameters/radius measurements is it? If that's the problem you'll see the diameter symbol or the R for radius in the dimension text. You did click the bottom line and the arc centre, right? From your description of the problem I get the idea that you have been successful in placing the dimension but it 'jumps', it does something unexpected, is that right?
@@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 I'm not exactly sure what I did wrong, but somehow all the vertical lines were constrained after setting the radius. I redid the entire thing and now it works. Probably just a misclick right?
Judo, this is in reply to your question about getting the line to give a straight section after a curve; the normal way it works is that the line tool gives straight line sections left click after left click. To get the curve its left-click and drag instead of just left click. After a curve you left click (once) to place the end-point of the curve and then no more dragging if you want a straight line. So straight, curve, straight is a matter of click, click-drag, click. Does this answer the question?
I went to my local Junior College in 1984 asking my drafting teacher to teach me CAD-CAM and he looked at me quizzically and handed me a number two pencil. Thanks for being the teacher that finally teaches me about this before I die of old age ;) Update: Sadly this isnt doing what I hoped. I cant even get the Sketch Palette to work right, lol. Mine isnt populated like yours at all. I have a few check boxes that are checked and nothing I do changes it to what yours looks like. I have just spent an hour and a half trying to setup the Sketch Palette to get to the Constraints so I can click along, lol.. The only things I see are Options and Feature Options. If I cant even get the correct menus that youre using to show the steps how likely is it ill learn this? 0%.
Hey Mitch, there's a quick answer to this confusion, I've updated this tutorial which is getting old. There has been a UI update in the meantime and I've made a start on updating the 16. Here is the first one ruclips.net/video/LSRKJgTSS4c/видео.html Click through to the channel and then to the playlist for the basic tutorials and you'll see I'm up to the third one to be revised. If you switch over to the older ones at that point you'll probably be able to follow along OK.
My apologies Jack, these tutorials have been up too long and are overdue for a refresh but in the meantime have you seen the UPDATE video that I added to the same playlist a couple of weeks ago?
Hi Steve, fair question. Its a fundamental concept in all of the parametric CAD programs. Its common at the top of the market (where there are only two competitors) all the way to the cheapest and the free. It feels awkward to begin with but once you get it I think you will be at peace with it, at least in the sense of appreciating why it is so. I haven't included revolved extrusions in the 16 parts but you'll recognise the same method there too when you come to it. I try to introduce this repetitive sketch/feature workflow by multiple examples. Actually, reading your question again, you're asking why ANOTHER sketch? If that's the question its due to the need for a sketch to define every feature. You'll see that usually, each sketch is 'consumed' in the production of each feature.

Thank you very much for these videos. They're straightforward and easy to follow. I've used Creo and SolidWorks pretty extensively and some processes carry over but not all. It's great to see it all broken down into clear instructions that don't skip any steps.
Thankyou Kelly

Love the way you started this off I've been looking for a set of tutorials that work like my analog brain - I took several semesters of engineering drawing many moons ago in the pencil and paper, compass and triangles days. I've run through the first 3 episodes and I feel like I've made more progress with F360 than anything else I've looked at so far. Thanks!

That's great Rafael. Fusion is a bit different to Inventor but you have a huge advantage over those who are seeing CAD for the first time.

@@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 A liitle further over the horizon as we can't see the KI lighthouse ( we are in the Meander Valley) I was a paint chemist (until I retired 28 years ago) with wannabe leanings to model engineering, steam engines. I am using the touch pad on my Mac and not a mouse. to make the arc from the straight line what function is needed to continue. Great series.
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing DJ, will you 3D print them? There are many possibilities as you say.
Great content, no other tutorial has really made proper sense to me except yours

At 5:44 when you set the dimension from center of arc to bottom to be 30, it won't accept any value less than 60.

Hey --- I am starting to get it even with different software. Thank you Don Doerner
Great to hear don, all parametric CAD works in basically the same way but with a different front end. You never waste your time so long as its parametric.
I'm glad to get all the drawings at once. Saves aggravation. My drawing says extrude only 30mm, was that changed?
No Sylvain, you're onto me, it was supposed to be 30mm, I'm going senile. BTW its not the only error I've made that you will likely pick me up on. I'm planning on correcting this one and a few more when I produce new tutorials in the new user interface.
Everything is great, however, I use a magic mouse on a Mac not the three button mouse isn't available. What do you recommend?

Very detailed easy to follow tutorial.Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! The older I get, the slower I go.
Paul, you have no idea how many times I've done and redone those exercises myself. They do eventually sink in.

You're welcome, Jacki, you won't be a novice for long. The curve is a neat trick but its really only a timesaver. Its possible to get the same result with arcs or circles and a bit of trimming. @@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 thanks, I will give them a look.
I was able to generate code for a coule projects... but production had fallen into a
tail-chasing vortex to zero...
@@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 Yes! Thank you for your reply. I finished lesson 10 last night.
You can use the little XYZ widget/spinner in the upper right to make sure you're 1) in the right plane and 2) viewing from the right angle. It's a nice little reference and has a home button if you get "lost."
When doing the extrude, glance at the arrow along the line of the extrusion, and drag it in the opposite direction if necessary before executing the operation.
Merci beaucoup pour ces vidéos vues de la Normandie en France

Hi Arnold, loving the tutorials. My finished items end up on there side. On number 3, when you first selected the axis between red and green you had the Front view facing. My selected Top. So when I click Home at th end I my Front view is the underside of the unit.. What initial set up in Preferences have I got wrong?
I'm pleased to have you on the channel Keith. I did do a video about re-orienting your part if there is a need to, here it is; ruclips.net/video/2apwwAQgvbQ/видео.html
There is also a video on my Preference settings where you can also download a PDF of all my settings for the time you're working through my tutorials, see here; ruclips.net/video/UVwJJvQR1fc/видео.html
Anyway, there's a setting on the Preferences>General page where you can specify Z up like I have. If this doesn't solve your problem check out this video from Mechanical Advantage about how to change and re-set the home view; ruclips.net/video/0KZD4j6tL3Q/видео.html
You'll soon be in complete control of this Keith, if you're paying attention at the level you clearly are, it will soon be your servant.
Hi Arnold, I have had a look at it appears you select 'Y as up' instead of Z in preferences. What is the reason for this as your preference?

Hi Arnold
Hope you are well and had as great an Xmas as covid allowed. Most of your tutorials are ok to follow - well done for that
However, I have had a problem with this exercise that has driven me a little mad - haven't solved it but understand it a bit more now.
Interestingly, if I create the sketch in the Red-Blue or the Green-Blue planes, it works just fine (perhaps in the earlier exercises, that's what I did)
Any thoughts?

However I understand that you may be very keen to get this right and so I've published my Preference settings just a couple of weeks ago, see here; ruclips.net/video/UVwJJvQR1fc/видео.html
One to look out for is on the general page almost halfway down; Default modeling orientation.

Thanks for the videos. I just downloaded fusion 360. Is the software you are using older or is it different between the personal and business use?
Hi Dense147, in the 16 basic tutorials you're seeing an older version, I made these in 2018.
All the license versions are practically the same, there are some differences and I outline these here in another video. This comments app won't allow me to post the link however you can go to my Channel and search for the title "Download from Grabcad", go to the chapter "Fusion 360 Licenses" beginning at 2:45
I will update these 16 tutorials soon but in the meantime I've done a video titled "User Interface Update to the 16…" which you can find in the same playlist as the 16 basic ones. This will hopefully bridge the gap and get you started to where you can follow along.
When I choose the axis the view does not pivot automatically.
Lol I was looking for this comment wondering why I remembered the schematic saying 30mm. In the end I just did 30
Amazing tutorials!!
Congrats!
Thanks a lot!
was curious how you managed to remove the default grid that along the planes - great videos btw :)
Thanks Jack.
there is a toolbar at the bottom of your screen in the middle and if you click on the second one from the right you'll see Layout Grid which you can check or uncheck. I've always found it distracting.
Awesome! Was going to ask about the same distraction, Thanks!
ive matched preferences. for some reason at :45 my orientation is different than yours in the beginning please help
It was ticked already, but I found that if I go into sketch palette on the RH side and click on "look at" it brings up the sketch view.
Another problem I had was when I finished drg 5I noticed that the slots at the bottom were not symetrical and I am unable to rectify this! Suggestions please. thks G
when I try to open the dimension tool, nothing happens, or I'm told 'over constrained'! (I've tried from the drop-down menu, & the keyboard shortcut - 'd'.)
& I cannot work out how to open the Sketch Palette, which sometimes opens, sometimes not. It's almost as if I'm using a slightly different (perhaps later version?) of the same program. There are other minor differences too! (I.e. the point of origin seems the other way around.)
I'll be able to help with these questions if they are still relevant after all this time. Its quite a step from layer systems to Fusion.
In the drawing, the thickness is mentioned as 30, but in the video, u have kept it as 60! why?
You're most welcome, as for the mix-up, Its called "old timer's disease". BTW I really need some of that glowing skin but I fear it may be too late.
@@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 good one!
Why doesn't the starting xyz face me when I click on the red green face? got it I had to click on create sketch
This is often due to a setting in Preferences. You'll find a link to my video about setting Preferences if you look in the video description under the first revised video. And here:-

By the way, it looks like you're working through the older version of the 3rd tutorial here, there is a revised version of #3 here: ruclips.net/video/IZ7R5C2kwqc/видео.html
why will the dimension tool not appear when I select it, (or hit 'd')? How do I get the sketch palette to appear? Can I move objects, drawings & dimensions to different panels, sketches or bo
dies? (Earlier Autocad products had 'layers', which I could turn on or off.)
This is a late reply Richard, did you get on top of the sketcher yet?
PLEASE COULD YOU DO AN EXERCISE OF WORKING DRAWING SHEET WITH AUX? THANKS ALWAYS
Yes Manny, I'll be getting to that before too long, within weeks. By aux I presume you mean auxilliary views?
Sometimes when I click on select the drawing does turn to the isometric view?
Don I wonder if you missed the select button and hit the one right next to it which is labelled "Finish Sketch" That one will take you back to the isometric view. Just guessing...
Note, you refer to "Stop Sketch" a couple of times, the button is labelled Finish Sketch
Dang! another correction

Hello Arnold I am enjoying this class, I am having some difficulty working the software I have the free version , is there a chance it may be slightly disabled?
Bo, the free version is the same as the paid version. Can you tell me about your difficulties?
@@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 I am uploading a hand drawn image and using the fit point spline tool, When I get all the spline markers in place I can't seem to make the settle adjustments to make the shape what I need
Hello Arnold. I like the videos. I'm managing to draw the parts but when I'm drawing on the same planes as described in the videos once I stop the sketch the view is thrown to a completely different one to that shown in your video. Any ideas as to why this might be happening would be great. Thanks
Tom, there is a bit of confusion due to the updated UI. I'll be refreshing the whole 16 but in the meantime please find a video in the same playlist on my channel, titled "User Interface Update for the 16..." Please note the two preferences I mention at 1:55 in that video.
Let me know if this solves your problem.
@@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 Great Videos! I'm having the same issue tho, when you use X and Y to sketch on...then finish it...it faces the TOP, while yours faces the FRONT (right top cube). I copied your preferences, it doesn't seem to influence it... *or I might have missed something
When we get to CAM it matters and we'll cover it there but if you have a thirst for knowledge, John Hackney has a few videos on the align tool which I think will satisfy you. ruclips.net/video/btMffh9yo2Y/видео.html
one more down on to part 4
I right clicked. Edit feature. But why is the width 60?
I wasn't paying attention Douglas, I found out weeks later from a commenter.
Liked it...👍
Cheers
Fusion won't let me make the centre point to bottom dimension 30 mm. It auto jumps to 60. What do I do?
@@jordyv.703 I'm glad its working for you now. Press on.
@@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 Thanks Arnold! Very well done mate.
Arnold, my fusion has design at the top left corner and yours has model? I can't find model when you click on the program.
My apologies Jack, these tutorials have been up too long and are overdue for a refresh but in the meantime have you seen the UPDATE video that I added to the same playlist a couple of weeks ago?
Merci de faire le travail.
You're most welcome, Atelier.
Why does Fusion require users to start a new Sketch to Extrude 2D to 3D? If it's the same component why start a new Sketch?

@@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 Thanks ! So exciting! In the beginning I was using Epperson cad standard (2d) to get a basic knowledge. Blender was so difficult. I missed the freeby that was Sketchup. In the beginning I fabricated patterns with a lathe/mill but so limited in accuracy. I also have a resin casting shop. Model railroad related. 1/48 scale.
Drawing says it’s 30 wide. You out 60. I put 30 and can’t figure out how to go back with slider and change to 60. Still don’t understand where you got 60. It’s not a circle.
You're on to me Douglas, that's another error. Don't they stand out?

Your background is blank. I have a grid. That’s one thing your leaving out of your tutorials is to make sure we’re on same menu and grid, plane
you are a great teacher, im heading on to the next one. PS: the the width was supposed to be 30 based on the pdf NO.3
Thanks Thorgraum, yes - you caught me. It keeps me humble :)
I do not have coincidences constraint
You skipped steps. I can’t get my menu like yours.
My bottom line is two lines.
You’re wrong bout 60 aren’t you? Drawing says 30 width.
