Wow what a treat to get 7 and 8 together!! Thanks for your lovely reactions. Excited to see more HS! I second the requests for Red White and Royal Blue - it's a fun romp of a movie.
When Nick and Charlie are sitting in the darkened theater, they sit at the far left end of the row, leaving space between themselves and the other guys. Nick more than once looks down the row to make sure that Harry (the main bully of the rugby team) isn't looking at them before trying to hold Charlie's hand. Nick never looks behind himself, so I'm inferring that he assumed that all the guys were sitting in the same row off to his right. Whereas the row where Harry and the other guys are sitting has enough light to easily illuminate them -- the seats above the guys and Nick and Charlie do not have enough light to to clearly illuminate Ben's face. (A lot of viewers often have missed seeing that Ben is there, and Reactors have had to "rewind" when someone suggests that Ben is up a couple of rows back and above.)
I do not want to disagree with you here, but imagine you are with your new boo, your "ex" who assaulted you, and the school bullies at the movies. I'd know where everyone is sitting. But that's not plot, just my opinion.
I’m so glad you loved it. I’d like to add that I loved the way the did the end of ep 7 and beginning of ep 8. I think this season needed that bit of darkness they had in the plot. Both Charlie and Nick were making me genuinely worry, which is why their reunion hit so much harder - Charlie’s sentence “maybe it would be better if i didn’t exist” was very striking. Suicidal ideation needs to be talked about and destigmatised more! And I’m so glad Tori was here to hug him and tell him that he’s important for her life. And Nick truly lost all his friends in a single day, got into his first ever fight, was completely isolated and about to be broken up with. I think that kid so much for interrupting their break up! In general, I keep saying it but I love this show so much. What you said at the end is so true: you can really feel that it was made with love (from Alice, to the actors, the producers, the editors… everyone has so much love and respect for the show which really shines through.)
Thank you for this! We did not get into the suicidal ideation in our reaction, because tbh, I felt it was a bit rushed. We had a decline on Char's side for a couple of episodes, but that last step would have needed more in-series comment for me, personally. That's why I didn't even talk about it. I wonder if they go back to this and have a proper discussion and reaction to it.
I love stephen fries old sassy voice as a headmaster 😅 and i love thats nicks mom say sorry to nick and the line i wasnt born in the eighten century is from olivia, because she played a bisexuell queen in the favorite, in the comics is nicks mom saying i wasnt born in the 1920
Just have to say love your reactions. The scene where Nick comes out to his mum is probably one of my favorite scenes in season 1. Fun fact Kits acting in this scene made Olivia so emotional and cried. They ended up shooting the scene several times.
Unfortunately, RUclips requires Reactors to edit sections of the episodes out for copyright considerations. As a result, a lot of Reactors end up not witnessing the key dialogue they need to understand what is happening or what happens later. The Reactors, then, are at the mercy of whoever the editor was; and sometimes the editors are not clear on what dialogue is relevant or key to aid understanding, and should be included. Since Laura is watching the edited episode cold (not having previewed it), there were several things she missed. For example, in episode 7: As Nick and Charlie arrived in the cinema, they have a conversation about how OK it was for Charlie to be there where Nick's 'friends' will be. Nick reassures him that it will be ok because Harry and Ben won't be there. They are stopped in their tracks when the crowd opens up to reveal that Harry and Ben actually are there. Nick guides Charlie over to the alcove where they will be away from the other boys and where they can buy popcorn. Nick apologises, saying that he did not know they would be there and if he had known in advance that they would be there, he wouldn't have gone there with Charlie. *** **** **** During that conversation, we see one of the first instances in which Charlie loses his appetite when he is stressed out. He turns down the popcorn but suggests that Nick have some. Nick seems to know that the lack of appetite was related to the stress of seeing the 2 guys who have acted as bullies in the past. *** *** *** Also, after Charlie leaves, and Nick returns to confront Harry about his bullying of Charlie, we can see that some of the guys in the rear of the group look worried/concerned/uncomfortable watching Harry bullying Nick. I inferred that they did not know what to do about it; Harry is a loud/formidable force in the group. *** *** *** I was not sure whether Laura understood the egregiousness of Harry using the F-slur. Nathan pointed out the slur about 3 times, indicating that it was important to pay attention to. (Maybe she did but I couldn't 'read' her expression and tone of voice adequately [If I misread her, I apologize] But just in case, I'll say what I was thinking about the use of the F-slur and Nick's response to it. I don't know whether all languages/cultures have an understanding that some words are automatically considered "fighting words." When I was much younger (in the 1960s and 1970s) I learned that what is called the N-word was a 'fighting word' especially when a White person directed it at a Black person. (People even used the phrase "fighting words" to indicate that their use was an understood incitement to violence.) So in this episode, Harry used the well-known 'fighting word' the F-slur. It was a trigger which induced Nick to "throw hands". Later, when Nick tried to explain to his mom how he got into a fight with Harry, he first mentioned that Harry had been treating Charlie badly for a long time and finally used "a really bad word" to refer to Charlie. Nick did not even have to say the word, his mom knew exactly what it had to be. As a result, she was able to connect the dots and ask "Charlie is a special friend, isn't he?" When Nick answers Yes, he is --- most reactors I've watched have stopped the video and said "She knows." *** *** *** Later on, some of the dialogue was missing from the conversation between Charlie and Nick at lunch. Charlie kept saying that the fights were Charlie's fault (which Nick (and I ) denied). But Charlie eventually made it clear that he believed that his friendship with Nick was causing Nick a lot of trouble in his life, trouble he wouldn't have had to deal with if it had not been for his association with Charlie. It was pretty clear to Nick where Charlie was going with this. [If it wasn't clear in that conversation that Nick knew that Charlie was trying to break up with him, in order to protect him --- then in episode 8, Nick's speech (in the corridor), which began "I don't want to break up" made it crystal clear.] *** *** *** *** *** *** In Episode 8, a lot of the dialogue between Charlie and Tori was missing (at the beginning next to the drum set). When Charlie mentions that the fights between Harry and both Nick and Tao were Charlie's fault, Tori says that she is 95% sure that the fights were Harry's fault --- and she was not even there. Tori asks for more information about what was up with Charlie. He explains that before Nick, he had been sort of going out with another guy (Ben). And that Ben had acted like Charlie was ruining his life and that Ben wished Charlie did not exist. And Charlie says that now he's causing Nick to get into fights and lose his friends, and Charlie was starting to believe that maybe he did ruin other people's life. He adds that maybe it would be better if he did not exist. That bit of dialogue was important; Charlie was exhibiting suicidal ideation. Also, when Tori offered to make him pizza for dinner, Charlie said he wasn't hungry. (That is the second time that week when Charlie was triggered to lose his appetite when he was stressed out.) *** *** *** [I'm sure there is more for me to comment on, but it's getting late for me and my brain is starting to fade.] 🩷💜🩵
When Nick says “what if I came out?” I had a similar reaction the first time I watched it. Because yeah, grabbing an openly gay boy’s hand and dragging him away would indicate something. But homophobia is an interesting creature that manifests itself in weird and contradictory ways. Generally it results in a kind of purity culture among boys wherein a single drop of sensitivity (or “femininity”, or association with anything or anyone known to be gay) will result in being labelled as gay, so any expression of that is forbidden. But this can be circumvented if the crowd has a vested interest in the target’s heterosexuality as some kind of paragon. “This person CANT be gay, they’re so cool and talented”. People explained away the sexualities of Elton John and Freddie Mercury until they couldn’t, for example. I honestly think Nick is an example of this. He is clearly popular and respected, the best at rugby, outwardly confident, unbothered and disinterested in the drama around him (his casual disdain for watching his friends “chuck stuff at people”, seeming neutral about 2 girls being into him). Whereas others would be afraid to approach Charlie to join the rugby team because of that purity culture, Nick doesn’t care about that. Because his peers already respect him and identify with him, and they may not want to identify with and respect a queer person, they may be ready to explain away this behaviour even if that all saw it. They may be thinking something like this: Charlie, after a recent public bullying event from Harry, quit the rugby team, meaning he won’t participate in the annual sports day game. Nick is good friends with Charlie. Nick saw Charlie in the crowd and wanted to talk to him, console him, convince him to come back to the team, stand in solidarity against bullying, whatever. Nothing gay about that! No need to worry that our idol might be gay! Obviously both sides of this are homophobic. The purity culture where boys police others and themselves against any “gay” behaviour is homophobic, but in a more subtle way, so is insisting on someone’s heterosexuality for fear that they’ve accidentally respected or idolized a gay person (the HORROR!). This reinforces the idea that qualities they value in others can never be held by a queer person. So, all this to say, I can easily imagine a scenario where Nick would still need to come out, even if everyone saw it.
Yeah harry being suspended from school for fighting is a BIG difference from being expelled. So whether or not we'll see him in future seasons, he still attends the school
@@Cine_Curious You will see him a couple of times in season 2. And he shows up in the book Nick and Charlie. (I won't tell you what he does or doesn't do, though.)
But if Elle hadn't said anything and instead told Tao to ask Charlie about it, he would still have known that Charlie was keeping things from him and he would have been just as upset. Elle is really in a no-win situation here...
That’s so true. Either way, she’s not in a good position. Along the way and years you learn how to handle your business and your friends at the same time. Charlie hopefully got that lesson here.
Going into season 1, Alice and the producers had a 4 season story planned, but knowing that Netflix is notorious for cancelling shows they filmed some of the season 1 finale scenes as having a more definite, finished effect than really intended for the story, just in case there was no season 2. So season 2 reopens a couple of storylines that seemed a done deal at the end of season 1. For one, Nick ditching his Conversion Goal on the rugby pitch to go collect Charlie and drag him away holding his hand. If there had been no season 2, that would have served as Nick coming out as Charlie’s boyfriend to the entire school by the end of the one season TV show. However season 2 happened and picks up by pretending most kids didn’t realise what it means that Nick walked off with Charlie instead of kicking his goal. I’m laughing that you found the sports day so onerous. I ‘hate’ sports too, but you have to admit they got so many romance and friendship progressions done during that day!
Look, look. We did not really get any real class or lesson - French with Elle - but sports twice. That's what's itching me a bit. But basically with every series or movie set in school. I cannot stand the pretend running and tackling. Just give me more of Elle's French lessons, some math - show me what everyone is good at!
NOT Nicks fault Ben & Harry just showed up , im sure they asked their mutual friends friends what they were doing & when they herd Nick & Charlie were going they showed up
So, that the part where the book and the show start to diverge... There is NOTHING in the book between the cinema and the bich date ! (if i remember corectly the beach date is the day after the cinema) and even the milkshake date isn't in the book Elle and Aled (which is replace by Isaac in the show) guessed that nick and charlie were together during the bowling scene but was never told. Tao at the end of book 2 don't know either (that's where the first season end : at the end of the second book) For Elle telling about Nick and Charlie to Tao : i really think that she shouldn't have... Charlie never said to anyone that they were together : it was always Nick saying it, Charlie was letting Nick be out by his own rythme... but i totaly understand why she did it and why Tao was so hurt You also ask how old is Tori : she is 16, she is in the same grade as Nick, Elle, Tara and Darcy
Thanks for that back story. I wonder what the changes mean for series 2. AND: I didn't even realise, that Tori is older than Charlie. She is giving age- and timeless in her perfection.
NOT on Charlie to tell Tao NICKS buissness , you seen Tao around Nick ? if you were Nick would you ? STILL not Elles place to tell Tao about Nick & Charlie , they know what happens when you are outed , it happened with Charlie
Sorry, it's late at night here, so I can't watch your reactions to both episodes in one go. In the park scene, I think Elle was practically begging Tao to join the dots. "I'm not surprised Nick fought Harry if Harry was being a dick to Charlie." Tao said it's been weeks since they had sundaes and Charlie still hasn't said anything to Tao. Elle can see keeping this a secret is putting a strain on Charlie and Tao's friendship. She must be worried about her own relationship with Tao - how is he going to react when he eventually finds out that Elle has been joining with everybody else in keeping this a secret from him? And the longer it goes on the worse Tao's reaction is going to be. Are Nick and Charlie entitled to expect her to keep a secret at the cost of her own relationships?
This! She has to juggle their friendship for them. That’s just a roundhouse kick of being mean from Charlie. But happily they figured it all out. And even Charlie, as perfect as he is, sometimes makes a mistake. Loved to see some flaws.
At the milkshake gathering, what was happening was that Nick was coming out to the entire friend group. The news was Nick's to reveal. And he started telling the group about it, through the "We thought it would be fun to have a triple date --- Tao and Elle, Tara and Darcy ... AND" ({Understood/implied *Nick and Charlie*}) The AND also implied that Tao was to be included in the revelation. (Since he was going to be included in the triple date) [BUT Charlie has been very restrictive in his understanding of "keeping the secret"; he took on too much responsibility in trying to "protect" Nick. (Nick and Charlie had different definitions of 'keeping the secret': Nick just did not want to mention the information to people AT SCHOOL; Charlie decided to go farther and lie to everyone, without asking Nick if he wanted them to LIE.) In fact, looking back to the Rugby match of episode 4, we can see that he apologizes to Charlie when he realizes how strict Charlie is trying to be to protect him (Nick looks upset about all the lies. And even asks "are you sure it's ok?" when Charlie announces to him that he will keep the information about their relationship from the friend group. ) ] At the triple date, It was Charlie who shut down the idea that anyone but he should tell Tao (at the right time [whenever that might be]) even though it is ** Nick's ** right to come out or not come out. When Elle objected to Charlie postponing the revelation because Tao would be the only one who did not know, Nick had a very worried look on his face; he was not happy about the postponement either. Clearly, in the context of the milkshake triple date, Nick did not want to be 'protected.' And since it had been possibly weeks since the milkshake date -- and Charlie STILL had not told Tao -- Charlie had created a situation where Tao did not have adequate background information to understand what was going on in the case of the bullying. Elle said that she understood why Nick would fight Harry, saying: "I'm not surprised Nick fought Harry if Harry was being a dick to Charlie." She was providing the needed context for Tao, so he could understand what was going on. In other words, Elle provided the context that Charlie had denied Tao. She suggested the context for Tao by implicature, not by direct statement. But Tao, through much of season 1, has tended to be oblivious. [For example, going back to Episode 4, we hear Tao complain that Charlie is having lunch with Nick a lot. Isaac plainly says that they are in the honeymoon phase. Tao dismisses Isaac's comment, even though Isaac always knows what's going on. Tao says something like "It's not like they are actually dating." Isaac replies "Unless they are."] So even though Elle's implicature was not enough for Tao to 'connect the dots' on his own, he finally breaks down and asks the necessary question, requesting that Elle be more explicit. When she answers his request for information, she also fills in that Charlie wanted to tell him. (It wasn't her fault that Tao was not told the key information that would have helped Tao understand what was going on.) [The only person who should have had any say about what Tao knew was Nick. (And we already knew that Nick was in the process of trying to come out to the entire friend group. So Tao's knowing about Nick had already been OK'd by Nick .) So Elle had implied permission to tell Tao about Nick.

If Elle refused to answer Tao would have known anyway. If Elle lied it would have been a betrayal of Tao.
There's no way to please all of them at once...
So, that the part where the book and the show start to diverge... There is NOTHING in the book between the cinema and the bich date ! (if i remember corectly the beach date is the day after the cinema) and even the milkshake date isn't in the book
Elle and Aled (which is replace by Isaac in the show) guessed that nick and charlie were together during the bowling scene but was never told. Tao at the end of book 2 don't know either (that's where the first season end : at the end of the second book)
For Elle telling about Nick and Charlie to Tao : i really think that she shouldn't have... Charlie never said to anyone that they were together : it was always Nick saying it, Charlie was letting Nick be out by his own rythme... but i totaly understand why she did it and why Tao was so hurt
You also ask how old is Tori : she is 16, she is in the same grade as Nick, Elle, Tara and Darcy
Thanks for that back story. I wonder what the changes mean for series 2. AND: I didn't even realise, that Tori is older than Charlie. She is giving age- and timeless in her perfection.
Also, Sports Day was an addition to the show.
@@davidjolly3958 that's what i said :0 nothing betwwen the cinema and the beatch date in the books
If it was a 1 & done series YES i can see that BUT 3 seasons things need to be stretched & saved for other stories , no spoilers
Well they have been calling Nick the rugby king whole season so lol
NOT on Charlie to tell Tao NICKS buissness , you seen Tao around Nick ? if you were Nick would you ? STILL not Elles place to tell Tao about Nick & Charlie , they know what happens when you are outed , it happened with Charlie
Your feet, your feet
They're so cheesy
Lololol
#priorities 😂😂😂
Sorry, it's late at night here, so I can't watch your reactions to both episodes in one go.
In the park scene, I think Elle was practically begging Tao to join the dots. "I'm not surprised Nick fought Harry if Harry was being a dick to Charlie."
Tao said it's been weeks since they had sundaes and Charlie still hasn't said anything to Tao.
AND" ({Understood/implied *Nick and Charlie*})
The AND also implied that Tao was to be included in the revelation. (Since he was going to be included in the triple date)
[BUT Charlie has been very restrictive in his understanding of "keeping the secret"; he took on too much responsibility in trying to "protect" Nick.
(Nick and Charlie had different definitions of 'keeping the secret': Nick just did not want to mention the information to people AT SCHOOL; Charlie decided to go farther and lie to everyone, without asking Nick if he wanted them to LIE.)
In fact, looking back to the Rugby match of episode 4, we can see that he apologizes to Charlie when he realizes how strict Charlie is trying to be to protect him (Nick looks upset about all the lies. And even asks "are you sure it's ok?" when Charlie announces to him that he will keep the information about their relationship from the friend group. ) ]
At the triple date, It was Charlie who shut down the idea that anyone but he should tell Tao (at the right time [whenever that might be]) even though it is ** Nick's ** right to come out or not come out.
When Elle objected to Charlie postponing the revelation because Tao would be the only one who did not know, Nick had a very worried look on his face; he was not happy about the postponement either.
Clearly, in the context of the milkshake triple date, Nick did not want to be 'protected.'
And since it had been possibly weeks since the milkshake date -- and Charlie STILL had not told Tao -- Charlie had created a situation where Tao did not have adequate background information to understand what was going on in the case of the bullying.
Elle said that she understood why Nick would fight Harry, saying: "I'm not surprised Nick fought Harry if Harry was being a dick to Charlie."
She was providing the needed context for Tao, so he could understand what was going on.
Tao says something like "It's not like they are actually dating." Isaac replies "Unless they are."]
So even though Elle's implicature was not enough for Tao to 'connect the dots' on his own, he finally breaks down and asks the necessary question, requesting that Elle be more explicit.
When she answers his request for information, she also fills in that Charlie wanted to tell him.
(It wasn't her fault that Tao was not told the key information that would have helped Tao understand what was going on.)
[The only person who should have had any say about what Tao knew was Nick. (And we already knew that Nick was in the process of trying to come out to the entire friend group. So Tao's knowing about Nick had already been OK'd by Nick .)
So Elle had implied permission to tell Tao about Nick.
