I'm only fourteen years old and I've been searching all over to find someone who really teaches how to paint dark skin!! And if they do paint or draw "dark skin" it's never really dark it's always really light! So I just wanted to say Thank You for making your RUclips channel because I thought I would never learn how to paint or draw my own race. But now I know I will! God Bless
Synclaire J. Kelly Eddington has a few videos on how to paint dark skin in watercolour. She has one video where she paints 4 different skin tones including one really dark, almost blueish skin that is absolutely beautiful. And the way she talks about the skintones is also very beautiful.
@smilyLily1996. I feel the same way and I am much older than you. This channel is a blessing. It is nothing like seeing art that is a reflection of me that I can reference and be inspired by and learn how to create my own image. Happy painting and remember, like Eric said in his video, KEEP PAINTING, NEVER STOP!
I've watched countless painting tutorials but this one definitely stands out. you showing how much every step progresses is really sstisfying, and a reminder to take ones time.
You have no idea how much I appreciate this, what a excellent tutorial, your calm voice and direction is perfect! I am looking forward to watching the rest of your videos. Thank you very much!
I love your calm voice, and step by step approach , watched lots of videos and I think I learned more here about the steps involved and the method or reason to use them Thank you
Eric, your video is one of many I watched on the subject, and are my favorites. There are many talented painters out there, but I loved the whole vibe in your videos. You are calm, relaxed, and positive. The tutorial was great, too. You showed us through the steps and then recapped before moving on. For people trying to learn your videos are fantastic. Thanks a lot.
I am a negative painting. Out of all the paintings that I've painted I think I actually love 2 or 3 of the 20 odd paintings that I've done. I can always nit pick on small details that make me find a painting unattractive. No matter how I feel about my paintings I still LOVE painting. I describe painting as a drug that I'm addicted to. No matter how much I love painting, I still managed to stop painting and I just feel lost. I got stuck on a painting and just gave up. Usually when I get frustrated on a painting I take a break but this break just seems to be ongoing. It's a detailed painting of a singer and I have the whole painting done except the face. I've always been weak when it came to painting and drawing people so that just made me even more frustrated on the painting. When I paint I get lost in my own world and that's the one thing I love. I can just focus on one thing, I don't have to worry about anything else in my life (what's bothering me, my struggles, nothing). Right now, listening and watching your videos is reminding me of a natural high I have when I paint and motivates me to start painting again. I love all of your videos and I just want to thank you for being my inspiration.
Painters are never truly satisfied. It's a life long journey if you love painting and you can never totally give it up despite the long periods of inactivity. The best things to do is keep working through your challenges. You can be your own worst enemy by criticizing yourself rather than saying, how can I make this better.. The best paintings I've done are the ones I didn't stress over. Are they perfect? No, there is no such thing in painting. Do I think they can be better? Yes. - The best way to become a better painter is to paint often, even when you don't feel like it. Don't wait to be inspired. You'll get the hang of it and you'll find that you are better able to work out your mistakes to become a better painter. I know you've heard that you learn more from your mistakes and that is so true. When you get stuck on a painting, it may be useful to start another. That way you don't have time to let a break become weeks or months. Then later you may be able to see the problems with the first painting and how to correct it. Practice is essential to being the artist you want to be. - I don't know if you do this, but is good to stand back some distance and look at your painting during the process. In that way you see it in a different way and in doing so you're able to spot what is wrong and make corrections rather than finish the entire painting and be dissatisfied. - As for drawing, you can always purchase books on drawing on Amazon. It's worth buying used ones. Drawing On the Right Side of the Brain is a book that I learned a lot from. I even learned to recreate a picture by drawing with it upside down. You'll be surprise how that really helps you to take your mind away from the complication of the drawing and engaged the right side of the brain which is the creative part. Sorry this is so long, but I share your passion of painting and know what you're talking about from personal experience.
this is a great tutorial and also you have to be world's calmest voice so I feel less anxious about trying to paint dark skin for the first time! thank you!
This came right on time. I'm new to painting & blending has been giving me fits. Tried my first painting in color last night was a fail for me. This helped tremendously. I see now I need to get more paint colors instead of trying to blend basic ones also
It's about 4am now and I was struggling with mixing and blending darker skin tones and found this video to be very helpful. It is sometimes difficult to match the referance photo though I think my mind is working in a different order tonight. Thanks for the helpful reminder, now back to painting 😊
That's exactly what I was going to comment on first! Watching him paint AND hearing his commentary throughout really relaxed me. Thank you for the tips, I will try to use them soon!
This video autoplayed after watching a tutorial on painting model figures and isn't something I'd search out as I don't have the talent for portrait painting on canvas etc but I wanted to say, this is amazing and watching your process is fascinating.
I remember trying to do a Bob Marley painting for my dad for father's day and it did not go as good as I had hoped, the locks were hard for me so I'm glad to watch this cause it helps clarify things. Thanks so much for these wonderful vids.
Hey man thanks for this tutorial. This will help with my paintings. It boggles my mind how anyone can dislike this video. Those four people need to get a life.
It really depends on the kind of pencils and the paper. Mixed media paper should be fine because it should have enough weight to handle heavy pencil marks. Plus it should have enough tooth to hold the pencil marks. there are two basic types of color pencils. student grade such as Crayola, Rose Art, Prang, etc. And professional grade like Polychromos by Faber Castell, Prima colors and others. Student grade pencils tend to be waxy, there harder to blend, the colors aren't as bright and they fade.
Your voice is so calming this is the first time I am commenting since viewing your work 5years ago when I was 12 and well as a self-taught, young artist... you are my inspiration😊 thanks so much for this video I needed it.
Wow , I never knew how much of a process and how many layers go in into getting the right skin tone...I Shasta have trouble with darker skin...plus I work with inks...but this has helped tremendously , thank you so much
You are AMAZING...I am really just in awe of your talent! If you could see my face when I'm looking at your videos, you would crack up at how happy and childlike my expressions are, lol. You are just SO talented. Thank you SOOOOOO much for sharing this:)
Wow, incredibly done. Watching art being created is so beautiful. I'm only starting now to take my art past my thoughts and to show it visually. I can't wait until I start painting! I find that hand made art has a depth to it. Thanks for this walk through and the tips!
this was awesome, very straightforward, very easy for me to understand. I'm working more with colored pencils but paint isn't something i never do, and the color concepts translate (for the most part) thank you for this video
This was exactly what I need. I've been painting for thirty years and I'm working on creating skin tones and this is what I needed for dark skin. What would I need to do if there was ambient lighting involved? This painting is in a candle lit and I though I had it but it turned into a mess. Thanks for sharing this.
Your painting is very pretty. I love to paint and I call myself a beginner painter. Currently I am following RUclips artist to learn more techniques they paint mostly still & life sunsets. I can not draw very well but I want to learn how to paint urban cultural black art. You are the first RUclips artist I have found that paints close to what I want to learn. Can you suggest how can I start learning to paint more urban painting? I want to find a starting point.
Thank You!! I have had issue with choosing the right colors when painting darker toned skin. My colors end up looking muddy and this drives me crazy. Now i know to just slow down and layer, layer, layer. Thanks again, looking forward to seeing more. i will check out you blog and facebook page.
wow your amazing I have always had problems with flesh tones and making my painting look realistic thank you so much I love to know how to do the nose mouth and eyes as well awesome work and amazing teacher
Im do happy to come across your page. I just painted my first portrait and it looked so basic. I wish I had come across your video, then. I have it, now and I know my next one will be tat much more better.
i started painting when my daughter, the artist died. i am 58. i started out with paint by number and created now have done several of my own, blank canvas. faces, people i am not so good with, nor drawing, but i a m amazed at how well theyve turned out nonethe less. blend color i am not good with. how do you blend colors?
Liked your vid, was excellent the was you explained how you yourself learned as you painted and developed your piece, where you got your references and all. I just would've liked to hear more about your colors, burnt sienna, peach, whatever it was that you used in this specific piece, definitely a very awesome and relaxing vid though

Your voice is art. It is perfection.

"if it turns out bad, boo. if it turns out great yay." words to live by.
Acrylic?! You're very good my brother. It's a struggle using acrylic, even though I love that paint medium.
Jeez I've been watching paint tutorials for decades now, and this is one of the few ones that has all the most important steps so succinctly laid out.
I've watched countless painting tutorials but this one definitely stands out. you showing how much every step progresses is really sstisfying, and a reminder to take ones time.

This is my favorite painting of the ones you've done. She's a pretty lady and your work on the skin tone was just wonderful.
It's so satisfying to see the evolution of the painting.

This was absolutely amazing. I have struggled with skin tones for a while now , and I feel that you have simplified this to an extremely easy method.
Passionate artist and natural teacher. I enjoyed your positive approach to the process of creating artwork. Be encouraged!
