Why China, EU and US are at odds over electric vehicle production

  • The EU and US have raised concerns over Chinese dominance in electric vehicle production, accusing them of "flooding the market" and limiting other countries' ability to compete on a level playing field.
China has rejected these claims, saying their car companies have a right to sell their products anywhere in the world, as Nicole Johnston explains.

Cheap heavily subsidized EVs will put car markers in the US out of business. This has happened to the steel industry also, with Cheap, below market value steel flooding the world. The so-called subsidies given in China are not that uncommon globally. Most of them are in consumer rebates when buying EVs and that has already stopped in China some years ago. And they were available to foreign companies as well in China. As for manufacturing incentives, one could argue that Tesla received even more than any Chinese manufacturers. From cheap land, cheap water to cheap electricity and even help on hiring 1000s of workers.

China did take the initiative to raise the price of its EV , twice that in China, in EU market so that it can leave some room for the EU car manufacturers a chance to sell their EV in EU. However, the boss in Washington wont buy it. Same policy by US on Chinese solar panels.

China is finding that they still have too many manufacturers and the big ones (eg SAIC, Gheely, BYD) are absorbing the smaller ones.
In the US, Tesla is keeping up but no-one else is. Mainly because they delayed moving across to manufacturing EVs.

If China was a truly free market economy, without government subsidies, they would not be able to compete with the West. The West has had 100 years to hone it's skills in the real world, China has had 30 years of government handouts.
