Genius. Thank you. Just bought a new Nolan flip-lid crash helmet. Was looking for a solution to the problem when your video popped up in the RUclips search. Many thanks
That velcro trick is brilliant for two reasons... It helps with image stabilization and it pushes the camera out just far enough away to avoid the helmet being in the view finder. Brilliant! I'm going to be using that. 🙂
Your set up looks good Skip, good to hear that Drift have listened to you and taken on board your observation and are looking at resolving the problem as I’m sure there are others in a similar position
Dunno if anyone gives a shit but if you are bored like me atm you can watch all the latest movies on instaflixxer. I've been streaming with my gf for the last few days xD
Great video and your industrial velcro looks like a decent solution 👍🏼. I've got the same HJC helmet and the same issue so will give this a whirl. Cheers 👍🏼
Genius! Thanks. Also thinking your velcro solution is safer than 3M adhesive, i.e. in the event of impact velcro likely to fail at less load than 3M, still no camera is safer obviously. I wear a camera to avoid fraudulent insurance claims which is becoming more common in the UK (twice to me). Have to say the filming quality of a Contour or GoPro is far superior for vlogging. The Ghost Drift XL has more of car cam features (memory looping and longer charge life), but comparatively a poorer sound and image quality. But I am not a vlogger so happy days with this velcro HJC helmet solution.
Thanks for the video Skip, very useful. I don't have this camera yet but am seriously considering one. The GoPro has a good rep but they just seem a bit bulky to me to mount on a helmet, the Drift XL is pretty sleek. The mike cable hanging down below the base of the helmet looks prone to failure and I was wondering if mounting the camera upsidedown on the left side would work better. I understand you can rotate the lens but not sure if this will be enough.
Hi Paul never thought of that but since I moved the camera high enough that when the helmet is sitting on a flat surface there is plenty of space for the mic to not touch the flat surface. I’m fact because I moved it up approximately 3” from bottom of helmet I get a better view of what’s ahead. Thanks
Hi Steve, I have a comms, interphone. Great quality, sound, does what you want a comms to do. I share as its a double with the wife and its a clear as a sunny day. Downside no other biker can connect, and we have tried for hours to connect to other people and it just won't work lol My wife buys me all my stuff xmas and birthday's so over the years I have got all my gear. Best way and a good lady.
Great video and excellent solution. Got yourself a new subscriber. I'm in the market for another video cam to go with my insta360 one x2 and I like this drift! Does it by chance have a remote or app that I can use to start and stop filming??? Cheers
Hi ya thanks for subscribing, the drift XL can clone multiple cameras up to 10 I think, I have just done mine after all this time that it’s a one button recording and stop. The is a wrist band switch which can go onto your wrist or bike, bike would be better I believe
Update - May 2023 - Hi all I can say that the that the Velcro is still doing its job well and I have been out in rain and sunshine and still grips very well but don't be afraid to give it a good grab and make sure it has a good grip on all sides of the sticky bits. Better to do it when off the bike rather than while riding and you lose your camera.
Hi Ian TBH I have no idea if it does or not. I have no way of testing or have that sort of knowledge, I can tell you that my helmet is in good condition and the Velcro still looks solid. This is a link to the stuff I used. www.screwfix.com/p/velcro-brand-black-heavy-duty-stick-on-tape-1-x-50mm/21670
Great video buddy. Just Ordered myself one.Not really fussed about using a mic as I mainly want it to capture memories from my biking trips and as a dash cam. Are you happy with the footage it captures standard or do you adjust anything when your editing ? Also is it easy to do basic editing like adding music ? Cheers buddy 👍
I love the footage and you will get a full days riding all in the card. 128gb class 10. there is a small mic built in so it will pick up engine sound which can be great. Footage is crystal clear and you can pop it in your hand when you want to walk about also as its nice and small. It does everything I want and some more, so I'm very happy with it. If you need any more on it drop a comment below. Plus I subscribed to you also.
Awesome thanks for the reply buddy. The videos on my channel are just me enjoying riding my cb500 and filmed on a £45 victure action camera hence why I wanted to upgrade. Hoping the drift will provide better quality 🤞🤞
@@grossi46 the quality is very very good, it’s not go pro quality and does not have stabilisation but for a waterproof 1080p versatile camera it’s brilliant
The mount came with the camera and just pushes into another mount. One is male and the other female. The camera has one part of the mount screwed onto it, the other part sticks to the helmet. Depending on which way you attach it of course
I have it on my shoei JCruise helmet - no wind noise whatsoever - you wouldn’t know it was there. Better to have it as not in the event of a biking /vs vehicle accident.
This guy came up with a good, lo-tech solution for the Drift using a bulldog-clip and a 1/4" screw for the tripod mount, which is actually very low profile and secure, and doesn't put any adhesive or damage on the helmet. It works well with the Drift's ability to orient the camera through 360 degrees: ruclips.net/video/NsOpfZOglsg/видео.html
Yeh not bad idea but a bit fiddly and I’m not sure I would be happy that it would not blow off at high speed. For me the GOOD velcro is the way to go, I’ve had it out in all weathers, rain and cold and it still has a massive sticking power to it. I check it when I’m charging my camera and it has not lifter a bit. So I’ll be sticking with my idea and it’s good to see what other people have done.

Brilliant glad it worked out ok.

@Briar Lyric definitely, I have been using instaflixxer for since december myself :D

Thanks Adam I can safely say it’s still doing a great job just make sure you clean the surface to be applied to.

I stuck it on the flip up , had it for years never had a problem, I don’t drive with the helmet flipped up.

@@BikingAdventuresandRoutesNI Thanks Skip, I'll try the same. Keep up the good work with the videos, I enjoy watching.
@@paul1963 Thanks Paul, I hope to get more up but finding the time to get is a problem at the mo. but stay tuned Im sure there will be lots more soon.
Fantastic video. I’m getting one myself in April for my birthday. What Bluetooth device do you have on the other side?

It has an app called ‘drift life’ app on play store or apple

Now 2 years since this video, so how has it lasted ? Any probs ?
Can I ask what adhesive you used to stick your velcro on and does it affect the structural integrity of the shell ? Cheers

How do you fit the mount to the camera?

Agreed
You could have packed it out with 3M outdoor double sided tape. Velcro loses its strength after a period of time
Hi Ron I appreciate your answer but for me I wanted something that would let take my camera off the helmet, although it is also a good idea.
