Maybe someone can try to explain, why are Soca Jab people always representing The Devil or Satan. I already know the deep reason .but in light of what is being represented by dance and celebration. Satan is given full and eager worship.I will wait for some interesting rebuttal.
In Grenada After the end of slavery, gangs of recently liberated slaves, covered in black grease, molasses, or varnish, took to the streets, and rejoiced in their freedom. The jab molassie in turns means “molasses devil” in French patois. This is what the slave masters referred to the slaves as. This is one of the oldest Carnival characters, dating back to the days of slavery. Jab represents the ghost of a slave who met his death by falling into a vat of boiling molasses in a sugar factory. The slave masters referred to them as double devils. The Jab occupies a space between the worlds of life and death. Jab is not associated with devil worship. It is the way we remember our African ancestors. And Also it was a way of mocking our slave masters. Moreover, you [couldn’t] really fight against them too much. It was a way you could mock them in front of their faces without them knowing that you are doing it.
Dwight straker.... yep
@@dwightstraker2443 Thank you Dwight for your excellent reply.
@@dwightstraker2443 Your summary is almost correct but not totally.
Jab Molassie mas and Jab Jab mas were originally two different devil mas characters developed during the Canboulay celebrations in Trinidad which began as a celebration of the Abolition of Slavery on 1st August 1834.
The Trinidad Canboulay celebrations which was the forerunner to Trinidad Carnival started in Trinidad on 1st August 1834 which was a full 4 years ahead of it also being celebrated in Grenada and other English colonies (from 1838 onwards).
Trinidad was the only English colony where we were able to resist the implementation of the Apprenticeship system that the plantation owners proposed as a substitute for slavery when it was announced in all the English colonies in August 1834. Though the Apprenticeship system was successfully resisted in Trinidad in 1834 it was implemented in the other English colonies between 1834 and 1838 which in practice extended slavery in those English colonies for a further 4 years longer than it was kept in Trinidad.
