The woman in the audience was Mama Cass. She was pop music royalty at the time and a helluva singer. The fact that Janice dropped the jaw of Mama Cass is no small thing.
Yes it is Mama Cass. Am in my 60's. Lots going on in those days. Currently reading Grace Slicks Auto. She and Janis were friends. Grace said Janis was the real deal. Wish Janis lived on to tell her story.
You got to understand that nobody, that's nobody in the white community had ever done anything like that until Janis She was a fan of the R&B black singers back then when others were not, and she covered a few of their songs and blew the audiences away. I remember how she shocked the world back then. She was really special.
I love how black listeners have no problem with this at all [See Jamel/Jamal listening to the Righteous Brothers for example]... No accusations of co-opting a culture or any other such nonsense... Just feeling what they are putting across and going, "Wow, the sister really has something special..." It is only sincere heartfelt expression that matters, not who is expressing it or what race they are.
@@cameroncooper4175 nothing wrong with acknowledging the differences black and white and vocalizing it, it's when communication breaks down that there's mistrust then fear then hate, on these channels if our comments remain thoughtful courteous and respectful there's absolutely no reason to not mention race because back in the day there was a huge separation of race music, BB King said as much, these pioneer artists earn kudos for bringing whites and blacks together, and these reviewers like Jamal aka Jamel understand the popularity of it and present to us the music we grew up with in a whole new light, love, soul humanity and the universal language of music, if you weren't around in the 60s as a teen or adult you wouldn't understand
Janis Joplin was relatively unknown at this time. She was only about a year into her professional music career. But she blew everyone away with her rendition of Ball & Chain". Interesting Note: The lady watching Janis performing here at The Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 is Cass Elliott from the group "The Mamas & The Papas". Her mouth drops & she mouths “Wow" after a particularly strong vocal run from Janis.
Indeed. Cass Elliot was one of the biggest female stars at the time and at the top of her career. She also happened to be one (along with 4 others) of the originators of Monterey Pop in a meeting at her house a few months before that initial Pop event. The first performance by Janis and Big Brother wasn't filmed, as they weren't well known and hadn't been signed by a major label. But after hearing them, they were called back and a shortened set was shoehorned into a slot the next evening so that they could be filmed for the Pennebaker _Monterey_ _Pop_ documentary film (and that is the video shown in this reaction). We're lucky that at least this was preserved.
I love these reaction videos on Janis Joplin. Watching them enjoy her brings joy to this old man's heart. Janis is still touching people 50 + years after her death. RIP JANIS JOPLIN
She was about 24 or 25 here. She unfortunately passed away at 27 on October 4, 1970 due to an relapsed overdose, after being clean for a few months. You should check out "Summertime", "Get It While You Can", "Cry Baby", "Little Girl Blue", "Me and Bobby McGee", and "Work Me, Lord!" if you REALLY want to experience Janis. Live or studio versions, either are phenomenal. Janis is Queen
She is incredibly annoying I watched her reaction to this exact performance and she went back and watched the opening guitar riff at least 4 times. It was 4 mins in before she even got to Janis and well you know the rest..around 25 mins to review a four minute video..smfh
Hi Sarah! Janis Lyn Joplin (January 19, 1943 - October 4, 1970) was an American singer one of the most successful and widely known performers of her era. Five singles by Joplin reached the US Billboard Hot 100 including a cover of the Kris Kristofferson song "Me and Bobby McGee" which reached number one in March 1971. Her most popular songs include her cover versions of "Cry Baby", "Piece of My Heart", "Ball and Chain", "Summertime", "Down on Me", (my favorite song), and her original song "Mercedes Benz". Janis Joplin died of a heroin overdose in 1970 at the age of 27. She was post humously into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995. Rolling Stone magazine ranked Janis Joplin number 46 on its 2004 list of the 100 Greatest artists of all time.
The young lady who was blown away in the audience is Cass Elliot. She was an extraordinary vocal talent herself. That was like it takes one to know one moment by two great vocalist. Janice wasn’t with us long. She was another “Candle In The Wind”. She did leave behind a wonderful legacy.
I love her music. She sings and brings out true emotion in us. My first wall poster was Janis Joplin. Listen to more of her songs and you will fall in love her.
She died before I was born but she's my favorite female vocalist hands down! You should watch Summertime, Work Me Lord, and Maybe live by Janis. Or anything because she's fn BRILLIANT! ❤
Only one hour and you are already getting a lot of the history. Including Cass Eliot being in the audience and Janis is the Girl that sang the blues in American Pie. The circumstances of her death became the script for cop shows on TV. Not her story but about uncut heroin going around overdosing victims instead of the usual cut down to 10% pure. She got some and for some reason didn't test purity like normal. The top hit song that wasn't released until after her death. - "Me and Bobby McGee." - My other favorite is - "Piece Of My Heart" - studio version.
Tiny little girl packed a wallop of Soul. Did you catch that beautiful smile? She really was adorable, and it's horrid the way she was bullied growing up. Even though success is the best revenge, we who love her wish she could have lived healthy and long enough to enjoy it. RIP, dear Janis. ☮️
The performance that got her her first record deal. I got to see her once in a club setting in the San Francisco area, before this performance. Great talent taken too early. The lady at 3:47 is Cass Elliot of Mama and Papas fame.
She was 24 years old at this time. She died at the age of 27. She had a hard life. And did not believe that she was good at singing. It started as a goof. She was inebriated and got up on stage to be funny. The band immediately recognized her talent. And then history. It is truly tragic that she was never able to recognize how talented she truly was.
I had a teenage crush on her & my friends couldn't understand why? But I thought she was beautiful & so talented..!! Loved her voice & style/dress.! I'm still an "old Hippie"...I was 18 when she passed...but I'm so thankful that we still have her music, video's & voice..!!! R.I.P. beautiful Janis..!!!
Janis' favourite vocalist was Otis Redding. She sang a fabulous version of "Hard To Handle". Check out her version of "Raise Your Hands" with Tom Jones from 1969. She knocks him into another dimension entirely. Ten months later, she was gone forever. A class act who left far too early.
Dear Sarah For myself her Voice is pure Woman Power. Her Record Pearl is my favotit. But she can sing deap, clear or slow: Mercedes Benz or Summertime. Ball an Chain was writer by the late and grade Big Mama Thornton. Janis told everybody, how glad she was that Big Mama Thornton write this Song for her. Most known Song writen by Bit Mama Thornton was "Hound Dog". Played by Elvis Presly, Eric Clapton ... My Favorit Record of Big Mama Thornton is "Jail" recorded in prison live, and the "99 years" This Two Genius Woman Brake the Wall of "Race music". This was the Name of the music from Big Mama Thornton and all tue other legendary musicians. So Janis Joplin Love told this everybody ... was in the Time of Civil rigth movement..
The astonished woman in the crowd was Cass Elliot. She was one of the driving forces behind the festival. At the time, she was probably THE premier female vocalist in the rock world. She sat in the crowd with her mouth agape and watched astonished as her crown passed to Janis before her very eyes.
Janis Joplin was the best female artist ever in my books. No one can even come near singing like she did, except for maybe Bette Midler in the movie “The Rose” (which was loosely based on Janis). Janis died of a drug overdose on October 4, 1970 at the age of 27. If you can find it, there is a really good documentary about Janis’ life. The lady who was sitting in the audience in awe of Janis was Mama Cass Elliott of the 1960’s band The Mama’s and The Papa’s. If you haven’t heard of them, look up their songs “California Dreaming” and “Monday, Monday”.
The woman in the audience who was blown away by Janis's performance was Momma Cass Eliott, one of the leading female singers of the time. Even Janis's peers were blown away by her.
So glad you loved this one Sarah, your enjoyment is infectious! 😂 Janis had a successor is the person of Elissa Etheridge, who, in addition to being another beast vocalist, is also a capable guitarist and aomgwriter. You might enjoy some of her earlier performances, such as "I'm The Only One" or the extremely powerful "Silent Legacy". Thank you for a morale booster on this day when I'm not feeling so good (back spasma). Music is always my best medicine 😂❤💐🌹
The woman you are referring to, in the audience, was Cass Eliot. Better known as Mamma Cass, from the group "The Mammas and The Poppas." They also appeared on the bill of that festival. Eliot was reported to have said later, "How the hell do we follow that." 😑 😮

That look she gives is so great, just awash in Janis’ power.
Two of the greatest vocalists to ever grace the stage.
Yes it is Mama Cass. Am in my 60's. Lots going on in those days. Currently reading Grace Slicks Auto. She and Janis were friends. Grace said Janis was the real deal. Wish Janis lived on to tell her story.

"The reincarnation of Besse Smith." Some say literally.
Right .. understatement. Every generation needs the break thru
You left out that no on since has ever come close to her black white blue chartreuse color doesn’t mean smeg when the first note is sounded 🎸
Janis bought a tombstone for the late great Bessie Smith her favorite blues singer from the thirties.

The group was Big Brother and the Holding Company of which Janis was a member
I love that we call her by her name, Cass. Great vocalist and human. Rip
Y a su lado de blanco Jimy Hendrix
With Jimi Hendrix sitting next to Cass.
I love these reaction videos on Janis Joplin. Watching them enjoy her brings joy to this old man's heart. Janis is still touching people 50 + years after her death. RIP JANIS JOPLIN
I feel the same. It validates why I loved Janis when I was 14 and still do!
AMEN ❤AND GONE TOOO SOON.✨️✨️✨️

Janis is Queen
Because of young people like you, Janis is still here, stronger than ever!
Janis was a performance artist of the highest caliber. I love Cass Elliott's reaction.
Music was so much better back then.
Sometimes I cry from pure excitement when I watch this performance and Mama Cass’s face says it ALL :)
Janis entered the stage at Monteray 1967 a miss nobody - she left it a superstar. .........
Janis Joplin had a big heart and no one to give that LovE to.
Her heart was broken many times!💔🌹
There never was n never will be another like her, shes the best
Janis transcends all time, space and cultures. Just incredible.
I'm 76 and Janis still makes me cry.
70 and same here--every time I hear this song!
"I met a girl that sing the blues and asked her for some happy news, but she just smiled and turned away" - Don McLean ( American Pie)
One of the best live performances of all time
That woman would pour her soul into a song until there was nothing left in her.
Thank you for not interrupting the vid, as so many others do.
~ Like Charismatic Voice, who stops it every three or four seconds and replays it seven or eight times as she makes stupid faces?
She is incredibly annoying
I watched her reaction to this exact performance and she went back and watched the opening guitar riff at least 4 times.
It was 4 mins in before she even got to Janis and well you know the rest..around 25 mins to review a four minute video..smfh
Janet is from my era and the loss is heart-wrenching. Every time I hear this song it makes me want to cry.
I fell in love with Janis when I was in 8th grade. My Dad hated Ball and Chain LOL We played the shit out of that record!!!!!!!!!
This was the 1st time for most of the audience hearing her. Blown away!

She just ripped out her heart and handed it to us.
As a teenager, I fell in love with this woma. 😍 I haven't stopped yet, and I'm 72 now.😮❤😊
Janis was One of a Kind !!!! Great Reaction
I'm 57. She's been my favorite singer since my early teens music bridges. All l that is the beauty of music.
Some performances transcends all musical genres and stand alone no matter what your taste in music is. You can only be jawdropped by this girl

One of the great voices of a generation that moved so many.
Janis was one of a kind and a brilliant performer! Thanks for the reaction, Sarah!
Great blues song superbly sung by Janis! 😊
Janis scorched your soul with her attack, whether in the studio or live(more so).
Beautiful! Beautiful Janis!

I enjoyed watching you watching Janis, just as much. Janis Joplin died way too soon, like many other great singers and performers back then. RIP
Good day to my dear. Yeah I have favorites but this lady stands on my top 10 . I hope you will enjoy.
This is what Music’s really about. ❤️🔥
One of a kind and gone too soon at the age of 27. It was a thrill every time she'd come on the radio back then!
mama cass elliot was in awe of janis...monterey pop festival....when you see her just say wow at the end it gives you chills...
Love Janis. Glad you shared.

With Jimi sitting there with Cass. So much talent lost when we lost the three of them.
She was 24 years old at this time.
She died at the age of 27.
She had a hard life.
And did not believe that she was good at singing.
It started as a goof. She was inebriated and got up on stage to be funny.

It is truly tragic that she was never able to recognize how talented she truly was.
Janis Joplin, Rest in Paradise. Also, the woman in the audience was Case Elliott ( Rest in Paradise) of the singing group the Mama and the Papas.
Shes got a lot of greats, shes got such soul n u can feel it thru your bod, u should definitely do more of her
She is one many pride of Texas!
She despised Texas. She got out of Texas baby, cause Texas was bringing her down !
She sang with "Big Brother and the Holing company" a grate RnB band.
The female heart of Rick and roll. Gone from us at only 27--such a tragic loss.
I had a teenage crush on her & my friends couldn't understand why? But I thought she was beautiful & so talented..!! Loved her voice & style/dress.! Mama Cass and Grace Slick were there and just sat there stunned.
That was the Monterey Pop Festival. The woman in the audience was Cass Elliot of the Mamas & Papas.

Janis was all soul. She always sang from the heart. Sadly she died an awful death at 27. She had however suffered much pain in her life 💔
She lived a life, and left us from at 27. Check out Summertime, Piece of My Heart, Cry Baby…
That's at .MONTEREY POL FESTIVAL. LADY THEY SHOWED WAS MAMA CASS FROM Mama n papa's. First time. Seeing Janis
Janis war one of the greats, who passed away too early. I would agree in the recommondations of J.C. !
The woman in the audience who was blown away by Janis's performance was Momma Cass Eliott, one of the leading female singers of the time. Even Janis's peers were blown away by her.
Janis is one of the best vocals in our history
She was so young there...
This is one of my favorites.... so sad she left us so soon
That woman was Mama Cass from an amazing band called Mamas and Papas.
The lady with her mouth open is Cass Elliot. of the mommas and papas. She can sing a little.

Yes, she was a dynamic singer.
By the way, there is a typo in your headline. Her last name is spelled Joplin.
God bless our generation 🎉
Tbe Grateful Dead song "Scarlet Begonias" is also about Janis.
This is soul this is hard this is Janis.
Janis was super special 🌸 I love the concept of this channel! Awesome idea! Immediately subscribed!
Her band was BAD ASS too!
JJ is the "BEST" nothing like her since !! ❣
Saw her live in 1969 in a gym at UT Austin. Good show!
Saw her live in Philadelphia 1970 but didn't appreciate her greatness, sorry to say. Now, I sure do!
The lady in the auditorium with mouth open in awe is the infamous Mama Cass .
Thanks for the reaction do Little Girl Blue and Maybe (Studio version) next!
She the best ❤
The woman you are referring to, in the audience, was Cass Eliot. Better known as Mamma Cass, from the group "The Mammas and The Poppas." They also appeared on the bill of that festival. Eliot was reported to have said later, "How the hell do we follow that." 😑 😮
Recommend Janis Joplin, all live 1969:
Stockholm, Summertime
Stockholm, Work Me Lord
Tom Jones TV Show, Little Girl Blue
You won't be disappointed.
Janis is 🔥 fire.
the genre is 'Texas Blues" , see also ZZ Top, Stevie Ray Vaughan, more
I heard some Robert Plant in there, or maybe I hear some Janis in Roberts singing. She was a performer, loved it
I just love Janis! My heart broke when she died 💔
A white woman with black vocals and absolute grit with an underlying gentleness. We love you forever, Janis.
Listen to the Cheap Thrills album. A classic. Kosmic Blues was great too.
Janis Joplin was influenced by Bessie Smith-a blues singer from the 1930’s.
She died from a drug overdose way too you too young.
The other comments list more great songs by Janis Joplin
Since I found you. You have blown me away with the emotional response to the storys/videos.
THANK YOU for bringing light into my day.
I look forward to seeing your next show.
🪴💐🌹
This is real raw unadulterated live music. So much of today's modern music is sanitized with auto tuning, snap tracks, over dubbing, multi tracking,
and computer enhanced vocals and instruments that the music isn't real anymore. I want to see more real talent that are real and natural just as they are.
If you get a chance listen to the song The Rose🌹 it's a totally different version of Janis Joplin
they even made a movie.
Her life it was tragic!💔
Love you !!
Janis was still relatively unknown at this point. This performance made her career 🥰
Cantava com a dor da alma.
Mama Cass in the audience in awe
Big Brother and the Holding Company
Have you heard her sing "Summertime"
JANIS! That’s all we need to say!
Yess here is a girl that really can sing 😊 now not even Cher can match this 😊 JAKX
