The Ukrainian government would be foolhardy if they relied on a UN peacekeeping force - as we see how that panned out for between Israel and Lebanon - well...Israel had to go into Lebanon and 'tidy' up the absolute mess the so-called UN peacekeeping force left. The UN is absolutely inefficient and out of touch with the new realities on the ground. Ukraine being included into NATO is the only meaningful guarantee that has any merit. One of the things that I've been wondering about is what will happen to Ukraine if Musk/Trump takes away Star Link? This seems like something that might happen, and that alone might greatly depress Ukraine's military capability. One thing that is being overlooked here, also, is Putin's threat to use nukes. This is what was keeping the US/NATO from simply fully supporting Ukraine--the fear that if the war really starts going badly for Russia, it'll just start dropping nukes. According to at least one retired general from the Indian army, the Russians routinely reached for their nukes during joint regional war game simulations with the 2 countries. So, the nuclear threat was and is real, though I think Putin was warned that any use of nukes would trigger an overwhelming response. In any case, the Russian military doctrine embraces the use of WMD's and this is what has had European leaders and Biden worried about for the past 3 years.
