Thank you so much for posting this. I have heard many performers sing this, but had not heard Peggy do it. Compare this to the shrieking and wailing that passes for singing on shows like American Idol, where everybody thinks singing is about showing how loudly you can sing or how long you can hold a note, never mind what the words of the song say. This is a master class in how to simply sing and feel the words of a song, and draw people in to what you're singing about. So moving.
Her flawlessly phrased, gentle delivery with a soft piano on this great Sondheim song makes this the stuff that legends are made of. A remarkable jazz singer (and actress & songwriter) from a time we'll never see again.
I saw her that night on the Tonight show, for the first time ever. I was in high school. I have been a fan ever since. 60 years old now and this video clip took me right back to that night. She was indeed the real thing. Thank you, this was a gift
Peggy was the real deal and total package. Not just the voice, but the facial expression as well which shows more "acting" in a few minutes of song than some performers could match in a two hour movie or play. Thanks for sharing this gem!
She captured my heart while I was just a teen ager so I have appreciated her talents for 55 plus years. So many of her classy humble quality reached deep into our souls without screaming out lyrics.
Oh man. What a find! I have heard this song sung so many times and have song it myself, and have never heard it sung better than here. Ms. Lee's stillness and seemingly effortless focus is wonderful and shattering. Mesmerizing and a wonderful interpretation of Stephen Sondheim's haunting lyric. :)
How thrilled that band must have been. They just got to listen. Where does Peggy Lee go when she sings this song? It's such a still, beautiful, sad, and reflective place. Amazing. She's luminous and her voice is ethereal.
I know, boo-hiss, but I still hate it, think it's laughably awful. I loved when "Family Guy" poked fun at Sinatra doing it. I felt vindicated... not that I need to be, mind you.
When one of today's female "singers" walks onstage in underwear and shouts loudly every single word as fast at they can at you, there is NO magic, No anticipation, No longing for more.
That was literally mesmerizing...
One of the few performers who could keep your complete attention. Marvelous lyrics, brilliantly sung.
What a beautiful voice.. like smokey silk.

I love her voice and her musicality
I cry at all of Peggy Lee's tunes on TV.
They had no idea of her voice and talent. RIP. :(
So elegant. Her clothes are wonderful for an older woman. She never lost grace. From North Dakota.
The incredible focus on each word impresses me greatly. wow
Another brilliant performance from Peggy Lee! She has a way with a song unlike any other performer!

I just found this. An amazing understated performance by the legendary Peggy Lee.
Slow, quiet and just piano and she pulls it off brilliantly.
Performing without a net! Impeccable.
WOW WOW WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
From a mad keen 75yo Aussie fan.
A voice designed to sing "thoughts".

Remembering Peggy Lee on what would have been her 100th birthday.
Her real name was Norma Deloris Egstrom. May God forever keep her.
What a mixture of beauty - the music, the lyrics and the inimitable Peggy Lee
Everything she sings is pure perfection.
Oh my Goodness, Ms. Peggy Lee... That was so moving!
This harkens back to so much I miss -- Johnny Carson, real talent, thoughtful interpretation. Isn't it rich?

SUBLIME
from which year did this delight come, anyone know?
What year? What year was this? What year??
Not sure, but I’m guessing late 1970’s
Did she hunt you at post office stamp of her yet ?
0:40
She looks like Mona Lisa - no eyebrows.
What a talent.
But that mole got higher every year...
I've finally found out why she looked strange to me, I can barely see her eyebrows! Must be the camera unable to see them easily.
Compare and contrast to bla ack "music" nowadays... laughable and sad.....
Her eyes are so completely DEAD.
Lots of Valium
@@monamarlowe what a stupid comment.
She must b talking about the democrats.
