  • It's spring in the mountains of the French Alps, let's go to discover breathtaking landscapes among the ancient streets of this wonderful fortified village: Colmars les Alps
Colmars a French commune with a population of 393, nestled in the Alpes de Haute-Provence department of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, offers a picturesque medieval charm at an altitude of 1250 meters. Enclosed within fortified walls, its medieval town unfolds as visitors stroll along its streets lined with tall houses, Saint-Martin church, Provencal Gothic-style chapels, quaint fountains, and its scenic ramparts.
Outside the walls, two forts from the late 17th century, notably Fort de Savoie, stand guard over the city, with the latter open for visitation in July and August. The second weekend of August sees Colmars come alive during its medieval festival, transporting locals and tourists alike to the age of knights.
Colmars-les-Alpes, once a medieval town fortified by the renowned Vauban, lies at the crossroads of natural and historical heritage. As a commune within the Mercantour National Park and a former border town, it surprises visitors with its well-preserved military and religious buildings.
During the Middle Ages, Colmars-les-Alpes prospered as a community enjoying communal franchise status. Its thriving drapery industry, which remained renowned until the late 19th century, contributed to its prosperity. The village's role as a key defensive point for France when the border was just a stone's throw away is reflected in its classic military architecture.
Colmars-les-Alpes' history as a frontier town dates back to 1388 when it became a border town after Allos and Barcelonnette passed to Savoie. Over time, it saw various enhancements to its defensive structures, particularly in the late 14th century. The troubled times led Louis XIV to commission Vauban to strengthen the border defenses, resulting in the construction of the Fort de Savoie and other fortifications.
Despite its military past, Colmars-les-Alpes was also a bustling hub of daily life for farmers, shepherds, artisans, and merchants who lived within its walls since the Middle Ages. Today, it stands as a tourist destination welcoming mountain and nature enthusiasts year-round, showcasing its rich history and stunning natural surroundings.
