I am making ornaments for my family. My typical medium is watercolor. I have watched numerous sites, but yours gave me the clearest directions by far. The tip about painting the wood slice & letting it dry to check for cracking was so much help. Also the sealant. Thank you 🙋♀️ New subscriber! 💖
Those are gorgeous... especially the green and blue one. I love the detail with the stars on too. 🙂 I've just bought a little starter pack with small tubes of acrylic paints and a few sliced logs to have a go at.
Thanks so much! Yes I love the green and blue one too, it’s very reminiscent of the northern lights! I hope you enjoy painting your wood slice ornaments 🙌🏼🌌❤️
These are so gorgeous that I ordered a set of acrylic paints, some wood ornaments, and some mod podge. The paint set arrived today but the ornaments and mod podge are still on the way, lol. Super excited; thank you so much! Edit: My paints and ornaments arrived and I was able to follow your tutorial and ended up with so many lovely ornaments. I gave them away for gifts and everyone loved them; thank you so much. 🥰😍🤩
I am really loving this activity! I am trying to plan out a craft for a group of children, and I was wondering what specific colors were used for each wood slice (at 27:13 min.)? I am planning to guide them through it, and I like the colors that you chose. Thank you in advance!
Hi Denise, so glad you enjoyed the video! Here are the color combos ( left to right): 1. Cadmium Yellow, ultramarine blue+ white, ultramarine blue, ultramarine blue + black 2. Turquoise, turquoise + ulatramarine blue, ultramarine blue, ultramarine blue+ black 3.Cadmium Yellow, cadmium yellow+ cadmium red medium, cadmimum red medium 4.Quinacradone magenta+white, quinacradone magenta, dioxazine purple 5. Cadmium yellow, phthalo green, phthalo green + ultramarine blue 6.Quinacridone magenta + white, quinacridone magenta Hope that helps and goodluck with the kiddies, hope they enjoy! Cheers, Jasmine
@@feelingnifty Thank you so much! I think this will be a fun activity for everyone! Also, how long did it take for the paint to dry after drawing the background before drawing on the trees? And what's the minimum amount of time to wait before putting the varnish on? Thanks again! :)
Hi! I recently made some ornaments using acrylic gouache. I was really sad to see some of them crack so I went to the hardware store and they recommended polycrylic gloss (I purchased water based, clear satin). I just put my first coat on (front and back) and am waiting to apply a second. I can still hear the ornaments occasionally ‘pop’ while they are curing with the varnish. I’m a small business owner and am making these for a holiday craft market. I’m worried they will crack after purchase. Do you notice cracking after you’ve varnished them? Thank you!! I’m so thankful to have an artist talk about this process and that I’m not alone…because I was so heartbroken when they cracked.
I’ve had some of them crack too. I read somewhere that sometimes when the company sends them out they haven’t had a full chance to dry. If you’ve just received them you can leave them out for a couple days ( without painting on them) so they have more time to dry. They other thing it could be is adding to thin/liquidy a paint or too thick a layer. The more moisture on the wood might cause it to crack- just a hypothesis. You can try adding thin layers and even try drying them with a hairdryer to see if that helps. The last thing you could do is apply a solution to it to make sure they’re fully dried before painting on them, like in this article www.wikihow.com/Dry-Wood-Slices-Without-Cracking?amp=1. Hope those tips help and thank you for your questions!🎨🎄
Wood rounds are notorious for cracking unfortunately. Same this happened with mine I bought as a set. Some randomly cracked. Here’s a good article I’ve recommended to a few other commenters that might help prevent cracks( I haven’t personally tried the methods though). Hope that helps.
ur paint is in tubes mine is in bottles like Americana paint is that all right to use? I just love your oraments I hope I can make my sky as pretty as yours. ty
Thanks so much Donna!! I can’t remember exactly the colors in the ornaments but here are some guesses to which colors I used ( also assuming you’re referring to the night sky ornament examples later on in the video). 1. The pink one ( Quinacridone Magenta with white in the gradient). 2.Yellow and blue one (Cadmium yellow medium and ultramarine blue with black at the top for a darker night sky). 3. Blue/turquoise ( teal/turquoise with ultramarine blue and black for the top of the sky) 4. Pale red ( cadmium red medium mixed with a lot of white) I think. Couldn’t remember this one, just guessing here. 5. Purple (dioxazine purple + magenta and white gradient at the horizon) Hope that helps!! Enjoy painting them 😊🎨🎄
Thanks so much Melody! And yes, I generally paint one side only, sometimes I’ll paint the back white or black with solid color and sign it or write a message if it’s a gift.
Oh, what a fantastic idea. I tried the mountain and the beautiful blue one. But to need much practice. But I love doing them. Although my sealer doesn’t look anywhere near as smooth as yours. The one you show looks like it has no streaks at all. Absolute perfection!❤
I sell ornaments and I wanted to know is the gesso better than regular white paint? Also I was at a show the other day and while I was there 7 of my ornaments randomly cracked that has never happened to me before. Maybe from the sun? I thought they all had plenty of time to dry because I had painted the background long before. I just get so disheartened when they crack because with all the detail work I do on them they usually at least take an hour and so 7 cracking is 7 hours of work. I am just trying to figure out the best way to prevent this. Also I used modge podge to seal the painting. Do you suggest the one you use over that? Could that have made it crack? Thank you in advance for the advice! ❤
I completely understanding on how you feel when they crack. I read somewhere that sometimes when the company sends them out they haven’t had a full chance to dry. If you’ve just received them you can leave them out for a couple days ( without painting on them) so they have more time to dry. Thanks so much Donna! I answered the color names in the other comment. Hopefully they help but yes understand about the challenge of matching colors and brands. Gluck and enjoy!!
A few of mine did too. From what I read online the cause is likely because the woodslices are not completely dried and some crack as moisture evaporates. You could try to dry them fully before painting on them. Here’s an article with a few methods ( haven’t tried any of these personally though ). Gluck! www.wikihow.com/Dry-Wood-Slices-Without-Cracking
Thank you so much for the tutorial! 4 out of 5 wood slices have cracked after some time.... Do you have any advices? I have used gesso befree applying the paint. I guess I should find another provider for these wood slices?

@@feelingnifty thank you for taking the time to answer to my question! I will try your tips. Funny is that I noticed this after a couple of months…so you never know when it might happen. Should I apply gesso also on the margins of the slices? Is it worth it?
Great question! I personally painted 1 side, but you’re free to paint both. On the other side I added a “to,from/love” and added the date it was painted. You can also add your signature to the back.

This is not really painting when much if the creation is done with pencil and such. At least there was tips on varnishing, that was helpful and oh, the sky painting part was good, just a bit let down with all the drawing.
Sorry to hear that. I can understand the disappointment when there are different tools being used in painting instead of just a simple paint and a brush. I will keep this in mind for future videos/tutorials. Glad that you were still able to find other helpful parts in the video though! And thank you for your honest feedback 🎁❤️

I just put a blank coat of sap green on the back of my ornaments. Would you put the gloss on the back too or just the front?
That’s a great question! I would add the varnish on both sides so the paint doesn’t scratch off over time.
