Totally agree. Not only is it a great song, but its sound is very much "of its time". It has that classic mid-1980s...well, I'll just say it..."Miami Vice" sound. The song fit perfectly with the pop culture of the time.
I hate how the "Miami Vice" production team made this song such a small part of the episode, but I was glad when I found it on the show's first soundtrack record, of which I am a proud owner. The record itself was a kind gift from two of my greatest friends, something they found accidentally at a yard sale, and picked up for me. I will always treasure those two. God bless them.
I just picked up the single from a record shop cuz it looked like that perfect 80s vibe. exactly what I was expecting from this type of record, I’m glad I picked it up.
I will tell you, it's very hard now a days to find a music artist or just music in general like this! This song had a beat, great rifts and awesome lyrics, the song, the way Chaka Khan sings this is pure energy! You can hear it, it's as if she gains elevation while singing this song. I'll tell you what, music for the most part today can't hold a candle to music of this era. This is when music was cutting edge, all the while being clean! I miss the 1980's terribly, today it's about bad remakes!
I bought a Miami Vice cassette to listen to while driving my '86 Corvette. This song played and I'd never heard it before. DAMN does it sound good on those bass-y speakers!
*Had a friend who got a job writing cell phone ring tones for Nokia. Part of his signing bonus was a red corvette. I think it was 98 or 99 model. Couldve been a 2000. Anyway, he got tired of it and he made me an offer for it which was basically giving it to me. I still hit myself for turning his offer down. A few months later I bought a new truck for more than what he was going to sell that Corvette to me for. I was a complete idiot.*
Okay okay, Chaka Khan is my favorite singer...she pulls notes out of the air and always deliver...you must know what I'm talking about. Thankyou just isn't big enough to describe my gratitude...but thankyou! (Until a grander word come's along)!!!
By far her greatest song ever. A shame it didn't get more airplay and a bigger spot on the show To me she could hit it every bit as great as Whitney Houston. . Thank you so much for this.
As a child in 80s My dream was to buy a Ferrari and listen to this song. I worked hard and bought one, best feeling ever driving and listening to this 😂😂
Feeling the heat I can't keep The pressure off me Hear the man say Earn your pay Or I'll let you go today But that's not for me I was born to be alive Not livin' to survive Come closer to me, baby Make me believe it, I can Own the night Reach up and touch the light Own the night You make me come alive I own the night Here in the dark Turn it on Love me forever like this Baby don't stop Make it hot I want to taste your burn again Take me away To a place I've never known Livin' right down to the bone Closer to me baby Make me believe it, I can Own the night Reach up and touch the light (Love still shines) Own the night You make me come alive I own the night You make me feel I own the night Own the night Touch the light (Love still shines) Own the night
Awesome memories of making up dance routines with my best friend when we were kids in the 80s! I hear this song and it transports me back to those amazing moments!
This hit from Chaka Khan was heard on the Miami Vice episode, Buddies, which aired on November 1, 1985. Miami Vice will always be one of my all time favorite shows. It was the first to combine MTV with police action drama.
This was my favorite song when I was 4! My mom had the Miami vice cassette tape in her Mercury Cougar, and I used to rewind it to replay this song over and over! I haven’t heard it in decades but it’s still good!
Right On!!! The way she do.... mmmmmm. Her phrasing, her fire, her. I sense a distinct quality of very richly defined rhythmic conception, like she makes choices like a composer is what i mean, so purposeful and clear and funky and Delicious.

Great song for a great TV series of the fantastic 1980's
This comment is old... But hey! This song does remind me of Duran Duran. Rio. I can't remember the verses, but I used to love that part about something .... It means so much to me. Like a birthday, or a pretty view. (I always thought this was very meaningful. Made me glad to know my secret likes were familiar to others.). I wonder if DD had anything to with this?
This was actually released as a single on Mercury Records. I bought it when it was released. I loved the song and thought that it might be valuable someday as it is the only song at that time in Chaka's solo career that was not on Warner Bros. Records.
So cool to see everyone's on this Song! Been listening to it for a LONG time, I'm an old 80's Miami Vice fan! This song just blows me away! Chakka Khan should try to remake it, modernize it somehow for today, I really think it's that great a song! Thoughts?
I love all of the songs on the soundtrack, but this one's probably my favorite. I want to know what they did in the intro. *CRASH* (some kind of synth cymbal??) *CLICK-CLICK...CLICK-CLICK* (hats with fx??) *CRASH* (the synth cymbal again??) I've been curious about this since I first heard this song.
This is the song I was going to do my audition to at the High School of Performing Arts in NYC. The school the tv show Fame was based on...but I decided to do my solo performance to The Police "King of Pain"
I do not know why this got my attention, and why I like it. (and why I'm even mentioning this here) But (And you have to listen *very* carefully to hear what I'm talking about) I like how the strings during the first two choruses only play one note. But, after the transposition at 3:16, you hear the strings playing two notes.
own the night is unknown and aint nobody was sampled by ll cool j maybe that led this song to more popularity because todays generation just know the song from ll cool j.
Wonderful song. Great energy and great playing on it by all involved. I do think it suffers today slightly from that 80's production on the rhythm section and keyboards....a bit more bottom to throw the ear off that less organic sound and it would be perfection. Nit-picking I know....but I wouldn't let anyone say it sucked without defending it and Chaka to the hilt. Hahaha
Oh listen to this.. Makes me want to grow another mullet, wear a white soft suit, holster a silver bren ten and then drive a farrari Draytona around the streets of miami looking for the bad guys...
Hmm, it's not on Spotify, however you can get it on CD, it's a Miami Vice part 1 compilation, link to the cover image below: images.app.goo.gl/QjeyZAZ22xtwXQgV7 ✌️😎
Extremely under-rated song. This should have been a gigantic hit for her, especially considering it was released during the height of her career.
I always thought of myself with Don johnson

I didn't even know it made it into any episode. I thought it served as a background music for some sort of a promo in a TV ad for the show.
@@jeshkam It was in the episode "Buddies" (S2E6). Frankie Valli was a guest star.
I just picked up the single from a record shop cuz it looked like that perfect 80s vibe. exactly what I was expecting from this type of record, I’m glad I picked it up.
I have the soundtrack on vinyl, and this song is criminally underrated
@@zippoboy00 I keep waiting for “You Belong To The City” to play after this (had the soundtrack too)
Queen of the mid 80's!!! Chaka created the mold for RnB female singers during the 80's.

Ok
I agree with you 💯 %
Not if your at a thrift shop!
Я люблю эту музыку 0:01
The closest thing to Whitney Houston and Taylor Dayne. Even Aretha Franklin. These legends, alas, some have passed.
Patti La Belle, Chaka Khan. The 2 most powerful voices that still give me chills every time I hear them sing!
Why can't you find this anywhere anymore? They should play this on classic R&B stations sometimes....
It was made for the show so was never released on any of her albums.
this song has unbelieveable power and energy
I bought a Miami Vice cassette to listen to while driving my '86 Corvette. This song played and I'd never heard it before. DAMN does it sound good on those bass-y speakers!
Amen brother! I found this in my cache of cassettes, and listened to it in my 94 Corvette this weekend! So awesome!
I did the exact same on my 93' !

I’m so glad to have the original Miami Vice soundtrack Vinyl
Time of my life
I love driving downtown, or on the freeway, with this song (as well as some of Jan Hammer's music from MIAMI VICE) playing....
Lowell C. Johnson DAMN, I MISS THE EIGHTIES!!!!!"
+Lowell C. Johnson YOU AND ME BOTH!!!!!!
Me too! :-)
Me three!
As a child in 80s My dream was to buy a Ferrari and listen to this song. I worked hard and bought one, best feeling ever driving and listening to this 😂😂
Oh, why did we have to leave the '80's? So much good times are being missed now.
Feeling the heat
I can't keep
The pressure off me
Hear the man say
Earn your pay
Or I'll let you go today
But that's not for me
I was born to be alive
Not livin' to survive
Come closer to me, baby
Make me believe it, I can
Own the night
Reach up and touch the light
Own the night
You make me come alive
I own the night
Here in the dark
Turn it on
Love me forever like this
Baby don't stop
Make it hot
I want to taste your burn again
Take me away
To a place I've never known
Livin' right down to the bone
Closer to me baby
Make me believe it, I can
Own the night
Reach up and touch the light
(Love still shines)
Own the night
You make me come alive
I own the night
You make me feel
I own the night
Own the night
Touch the light
(Love still shines)
Own the night

mkl62 thanks. I couldn’t remember which ep it was on.
mkl62 my favoris movie too
Miami Vice 4 ever!!!
In this song, the Yamaha DX7 ROM-3A patches "Bass 1" and "Marimba" were heard.
Incredible song ...was my favorite of Miami Vice
One of my favorite songs from the Miami Vice soundtrack!!!
Absolutely.
This was my favorite song when I was 4! My mom had the Miami vice cassette tape in her Mercury Cougar, and I used to rewind it to replay this song over and over! I haven’t heard it in decades but it’s still good!
80s and Chaka are inseparable!
I love the quality of her voice in this song. That raspiness is a nice touch. I bet this was recorded when she was touring or very busy.
& partying!
"Vamos procurar, as esperas do Dragão" 🐉🟡
Chakas vocals are extra good here
i’m so sad this song isn’t on spotify, i love it!!
Great voice, cool music!!!!
I'm ultra big on the 80s but just discovered this song a few minutes ago while drawing some 80s stuff.
This song is fucking hot!!!!!
I bow to HRM, Queen Chaka! The woman reeks TALENT!
Hot rock song for the 80's, 90's, and millennium. that what this lady can do....... transcend time with trade mark vocals.
One of the best soundtrack ever. Marvellous.
Cool music from a great era

Great song for a great TV series of the fantastic 1980's
What a song! What a voice!
The Magic of Miami Vice...!
In this song, the Oberheim DMX and Linn LM-1 were heard.
Chaka makes every cover version to gold! WOW! Wait...I said cover version? YES, This was originally released by George McCrae, IIRC 1 year earlier.
LOVE this arrangement ! flawless vocals Chaka kinda reminds me of A View to a Kill by Duran Duran

@@firstptr3and10_ I also love "Rio" from Duran Duran...I got you...this surely has that same kind of fiery vibe from that Duran Duran song...
This is 80’s greatness!

MCA Records (MCA was the parent company of Universal, the studio behind Miami Vice), not Mercury Records (which was a subsidiary of Polygram).
Back then I owned the world... Carefee times.. 💕
yeah this would've slid into that movie soundtrack - could've been the opener.. wow Chaka should've done a Bond theme.. still could
The best song off Miami Vice and that saying a lot as there were a ton of great tunes. So 80s and so good. Takes me back.
Who else? Fire 🔥 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥❤
this song only went to #66 on the R&B charts in 1986!!!
Love you Chaka Khan😘🥰🤗
This song owns! I love the sampled Fairlight CMI bassline, so fucking groovy
great song... just can't put it out from my had... and it plays the whole day in my mind.. 80's 4EVER !!!

This song is THE BOMB!AWESOME!Thanks a million for posting.
Good song. Great singer.
GREAT song ! makes me happy :)))))
As great as this is, this song sounds so much better on the original LP/Cassette.
Great number pity there was never an official MV clip to go with it
Nice TV Series & Nice Ost , Thanks 💗.
Miami Vice was much more cooler than Dynasty & Falcon Crest The fashion MTV sound plus Don Johnson as Sonny Crockett
It was also a bit more street than those shows.
@@76NightProwler plus filming the entire show in Miami Florida
Best voice since Patti LaBelle!
Stellar
a perfect track when playing a driving game like Forza Motorsport!!!
just awesome in 2019 !!!
My older sister had this copied on to a cassette, I've been searching for it for years, never knew it was Chaka Khan.
A great song and a great singer.
