    I think most of the people who hate Invicta have never owned one or in fact seen one in the flesh. If you want to take the piss out of Invicta for their marketing I get that, if you want to take the piss out of some of their watches because they're big and gaudy I get that. There is no accounting for individual tastes. I have two Invictas in my collection that includes some much more expensive and respected brands. In my opinion Invictas are really well made for their price point. I may be adding a Glycine bronze combat sub to my collection soon and I have no qualms concerning their quality.

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  5 лет назад

      I can understand the more rationalised dislike of Invicta. For those who dislike the brand but who have never owned one... well, I don't know where to start relating, really. IMO the 40mm Pro Divers remain essentially unparalleled in value, and are some of the very best you can get for under $100.

    Thanks for an excellent review. Now, if only Glycine would follow the Invicta pricing example and sell this watch for $299 with suggested retail of $1600. Oh well.

      they drop them on massdrop for about 400, and glycine direct on ebay has them as well. usually a bit more than massdrop offers them for, but sometimes less.

      Costco has the Combat Sub in Stainless with a bracelet for $289.99 in its warehouses. $299.99 online for members, ~$315 for non-members. Close enough?

    Invicta acquired the company but have nothing to do with the day to day operations. So it's not tainted by Invicta QC.

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  5 лет назад

      Yeah, I wish I could get confirmation that Invicta have no influence on Glycine design and quality... it does seem like it, but would be good to know for sure!
      PS. Except for the "Glycinvicta" logo of course :D

    • @guidothekillerpimp
      @guidothekillerpimp 5 лет назад +10

      You should research before making statements. The logo change was pre Invicta. Here's a snippet from a Worn and Wound article from about the time of acquisition..."In an interview regarding the acquisition, Glycine’s CEO Stephen Lack addressed some of these concerns. In sum, Glycine and Invicta will remain two separate entities, with the former still very much focused on making watches the way they’ve been doing, though with a much greater focus on the Airman and Combat collections. “There are absolutely no intentions to have a mixture of the two brands. Glycine will stay Glycine,” says Mr. Lack."

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  5 лет назад +5

      Maybe you missed it but see 14:54 where I reference the logo change before the takeover. But timing notwithstanding, can one seriously ignore the likeness the new logo has to the Invicta wings? I suspect that's more than just coincidence!
      Good to hear the CEO making those statements... but if it turns out to be untrue, that wouldn't be the first time (nor would it be the last time) we see this from a CEO, would it? Besides, he might not always hold the job either.

    • @guidothekillerpimp
      @guidothekillerpimp 5 лет назад +7

      The family that owned it and ran it before Invicta are all still there. It's been discussed ad nauseum in the forums and on blogs that Invicta a merely there for distribution and marketing.
      Did Swatch group destroy Omega or Glashutte? Did Richemont destroy VC or JLC?

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  5 лет назад +3

      No and no, but I think most people don't consider Invicta at the same level (or even "class") as Swatch or Richemont. I do hope that Glycine manages to preserve their integrity and "DNA", but like some, I fear for their future.

  • @willardhooton920

    I have the previous Double Twelve (Black), however this watch is a 40mm 200m water resist (not 100m like currently) and drilled lugs, original logo-LOVE! (One last black dial in this model is available on eBay for $368.US new last I checked)
    I wear it on a distressed Italian leather one piece strap and it feels and looks fantastic👌
    One brilliant quality of this 12hr “civilian” version is that you can actually read this watch in the dark, as opposed to its 24 hr dial counterparts!
    (The reason for this is that the indices don’t glow long, however the hands glow all night. You can’t make out the time with hands only with a true 24 hr dial/movement)

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  5 лет назад +1

      Ah that older model sounds rather good actually, and probably has a true ETA movement rather than the Sellita in this one (I got that wrong). Good point about the time readability in the dark for the standard vs 24 hour display!

    Just bought the combat sub (gl0249)... loved it even more than I thought. Going to buy this in a week after payday lol. If anyone is on the fence because of Invicta or other things with this brand dont worry, my combat sub runs 1 second a day fast and I could not be happier with it. Im sure the airman will not disappoint either. (be careful these things are strap monsters XD).

    Hello, I had a Glycine Airrman DC-4 and the build quality was excellent. I now have a Glycine Moonphase in my large rotation and again it has excellent quality. The relative thinness of Glycine watches and they seem to get the designs spot on in reflecting watches of the 30s to late 40s. For the real price that we purchase them at they are punching way above their price point. I strongly feel that people that don't purchas them because of the Invicta connection are really losing out.

    I own the purist with a cream dial. and it's one of my favourite watches. You are right, despite the long lug to lug, it doesn't wear large. It's a beautifully executed watch. Mine runs at 0 spd straight out of the box, with a 0.0 beat error, amazing. Even after import duty and and postage it cost me about £369 from Jomashop. From a UK supplier I would have been looking at £900.

    Great video and review! I have a Glycine Airman SST12 Purist (24hr dial) and love it. The logo is pre-Invicta. I do feel that the logo, although changed before Invicta, is too much of a blend of the old Glycine and Invicta logos to actually believe that this change happened by chance before the purchase. So far Invicta seems to have let Glycine be Glycine and let them do their own thing, which is good. But we will see if this continues, I do hope so.

    I do have a weird fascination with Glycine, the older models sold on eBay in particular. The older models are a bit smaller and still have the older logo. MSRP is absurd but getting them through the Glycine Direct for a few hundred is a great deal. And I like the unique look.
    People complain about them using a Sellita or ETA movement. Most Swiss watches do, so who cares. I hope they can move away from the over 40 mm case width.

    is Glycine owned by Invicta? is that the reason why the retail pricing is so high yet selling at bargain pricing everywhere, just like Invicta watches? Just curious....
    i like the design of the watch and specially glad to see that they have kept the old original design of the bezel function. Only small gripe I have is that it would have looked nicer if it would have came with a nice metal bracelet with some sort of glide lock feature, along with a leather strap included. Well.... that would be ideal, but nothing in this world is ideal anyway, so...that is that.
    as for sales pricing, I guess $350 to $450 would be the right pricing for this watch, considering the specs. But again with the additional metal bracelet, I would not mind paying $100 extra... Just my opinion

    I have the same wrist size as you , i'm on the edge of buying this but a little reluctant , you mentioned that this watch dial looks pleasingly smaller than advertised and attractive on your wrist , but you also said it was maybe awkward for you due to large lugs and would be awkward for many , could you please clarify between the 2 statements.

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  4 года назад

      The dial in combination with the case body makes the watch look smaller than it is. However the lug to lug distance is considerable so these may overhang the wrist, which would make it awkward (and inappropriate). Hope that makes sense!

    • @panthersleepy
      @panthersleepy 4 года назад

      @@PerthWAtch I guess that means the watch requires a minimum of 7 inches in wrist size for it not to overhang , too bad :( it looked really attractive and kind of called to me , thankyou for the quick reply , subscribing .

    Jomashop (Worldofwatches) I believe both stores have same address in Brooklyn and have same stock, once had Airman 42 double 24 hour for 562USD. retail of this particular model however is 800-1200. Tho being from EU I'd have to add 20% tax and ridiculous delivery price still awesome deal for US. I got my similar Airman for 600EUR, but since I love it, it's not for sale. ever. Don't get the purpose of double 12, but I bet people buying them don't really care anyway.

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for sharing that... wow 20%!? And I thought we had ridiculous taxes here in Australia!
      I think the double 12 does allow tracking a different time zone without having to work your brain around a 24 hour dial and without having to pay for a real GMT movement. Another viewer also commented that in comparison with the 24 hour dial watch, this one actually allows you to read the time in dark... when the hour markers fade and you can mainly only see the hands, it's really quite difficult to work out the time in 24 hour dials, but intuitive you should be able to tell it on a standard dial.

    I got the exact model not too long ago and I like it, but I don't love it. I would say their quality of watch is comparable to Tissot but has better styles imo. If you are used to quality Seiko watches or higher tier watch brands like Tag Heuer+, you might be disappointed. If you can get the watch under $350, I think their watches are great deal.

    Glycine screwed the pooch with their Double 12 models. It's an insult to the original 24-hour 1953 AM/PM concept. I can understand the GMT which uses the 2893-2 with its 4th 24-hour hand as it doesn't require becoming accustomed to a main 24-hour dial. The closest to the original are the Purist, which also have the 2893-2, but omit the GMT hand and convert the hour hand to 24-hours, a very simple mod. I have their SST 12 which is the 4-hand GMT 2893-2 in a very nice tonneau SST case. High quality and I'm very pleased with it. Just found a 42 Purist and currently acquiring it.

    Honest opinion here: hi there, great topic you have brought up.
    In floyd mayweather's words- absolutely!
    In my opinion, Invicta has destroyed the heritage of the brand.
    The proof is from their re-issue of the original airman.
    It had 1atm and everyone on the forums was saying maybe they are trying to be conservative with the rating. What a load of.......
    In addition to that, the construction had a drilled hole inside the case which destroyed most likely the water resistance. The hole they had in the case was on the original airman case to allow the wire hacking feature that the old airman was so famous for.
    Basically, invicta copied the vintage case and added that hle in the new release.
    Again, the forum members on wus said maybe invicta was going to add the wire hack feature later on. Again, what a load of.......
    They have way too many versions of the airman out and it is just an absolute over load.
    There is a reason why they are always on mass drop.
    Just because there is a swiss mechanism inside their cases or any other watch brands case for that matter, it does not mean quality. A mass swiss production mechanism in a piece of poorly constructed work is not quality.

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  5 лет назад

      Thanks for those insightful thoughts - I am not familiar with the Airman reissue, and those facts are indeed concerning!
      They indeed regularly appearing on mass drop now, which is testament to an oversupply. And yes, just because there is a Swiss movement does not imply that the whole product is of good quality. Having said that though, I think this particular watch I have in hand is actually very fair.

    This is the WW1-quality obsolete construction. The way better Airman is the AIRMAN SST 12 - its outer scale is a CASE-INTERNAL outer scale, operated by a second crown-screw you can turn with the hand. That second crown-screw LOOKS like it needs a regular screwdriver to turn it, but all you need is the thumb-nail in the track and it turns with the slightest circular impetus of the thumb. THAT IS THE REAL «AIRMAN», the «Airman sst 12». Don’t go for the rip-off version.
