      I love your reaction when you see what it's about. Nothing to be ashamed of, it's like the video says, "everybody bops". I would also say it shows how genius Cyndi is and how well she writes because if you don't pay close attention to the lyrics you don't realize the theme. It's a catchy song and one of my favorites. Glad you enjoyed it. And once you realize its theme it makes watching the video even better because you start to pick up on all the references in it.

      Before you move on to her second album and True Colors, don’t miss the fourth single off her first album, ‘All Through The Night’, the song is every bit as good as good as the first three, and it’s more like Time After Time. I think the video was at a concert, and my memory recalls it as beautiful, sweet, and loving.

    Greetings and Love from Germany again 💚. Cindy openly said in an interview that while she was alone in her studio one evening, she sang and recorded the vocals for the song. She added that she was completely naked. That was, ähm, an interesting information for me back then, as a young and hopelessly in love fanboy, as you can probably imagine. The video expands on references to masturbation in the song's lyrics, although not overtly. Among the images shown are an upright bottle shooting mayonnaise into the air, a sign at a gas station that reads "GIT OFF HERE," gas pumps (with "good x", "better xx", "Nirvana xxx", "single"). and 'multiple'), a large sign reading "Self Service" and a dance sequence in which Lauper portrays a blind person with a cane - a reference to the myth that masturbation causes blindness

  • @chris-julian5537
    @chris-julian5537 18 дней назад +26

    So many references we didn’t pick up on, back in ‘84. She was steaming up the car windows in the beginning, then it became evident that she was alone in the car. The lyrics contain “they say that a stitch in time saves nine, if we don’t stop, we’ll all go blind”, referencing the old wives’ tale that masturbation would cause blindness. In the last scene, she’s wearing blacked out glasses and is obviously blind when the hat and cane are thrown to her. And then there’s the self service reference at the cartoon gas station… more of a possible blooper here, but when wrestling star Wendy richter, playing the waitress in the beginning, brings her a burger and a glass of chocolate milk, then they show Cyndi in the car reaching for the glass of WHITE milk. Oops.

    She's been one of my top favs since 1985 or so. Great artist. I personally like this debut Album, but it is by far not her best work. It's fun, but in the future Albums, she does more of the writing and the songs are more mature and deep. Unfortunately, many people don't know any of the music she did after this first Album, which is a shame. This woman can sing anything. Such an underrated performer. I've seen her live three times over the years, and she's still the best live concert I've been to (and I'm 52)

    Cindi had SUCH a way of putting "racy" topics into her songs that were done so innocuously that the older generation "didn't catch on" for the most part. Those that DID catch on, looked kinda foolish because most of their peers were thinking "You're reading WAY too much into that.... mellow out." But us younger people (at the time).... we caught it, and we loved it. Madonna was very "in your face" about it (not that there's anything wrong with that, either)... but Cindi tried to be subtle. Technically, two sides of the same coin.
    I was 13 in 1980, so this was my teenage years. We had so much incredible music, and you could easily tell bands and singers apart because they all sounded different, yet somewhat the same. I still listen to all of it, from 1950s through the early 2000s, with a sprinkle of 2010s and even a few of today's songs. But my heart is still with the older stuff. No hate to the newer stuff, it's just "not my thing".

    In the early 80s, there was a pervasive theme of the end of times because of the coming automation spilling into our daily lives. People were visibly fearful of Y2K & that computers would rise up to wipe humans out. This theme has been made into movies & music that have become classics (Terminator, The Stroke). Exposing taboo subjects like masturbation was also popular at that time, too.
