True story. I was in art school in portland Oregon. I visited the studio Laika and Peter Chan Gave me a lecture on what it takes to make it in the industry. I worked my ass off and ended up animating as an intern on a short film called "Moongirl" that he did the art for. That's how I got my start in the industry.
I never played the original so when I first heard about this, I was a bit torn between being glad that I would finally be able to get this game and being sad that it looked even more like the original would never again be released. So seeing this is a great relief because it looks like they stay very faithful to the original graphically.
Great video! Good to see that you guys have so many of the original assets so it's possible to do a great job preserving and remastering this awesome game. Also kudos to the decision to keep this in 4:3 and don't change/fix anything that isn't broken. A polygonal remake would completely ruin this game in my opinion, so it's good news that this production is in the capable hands of Tim and crew. Keep it up guys!
Awesome. The fact that is is truly a remaster and not a remake (like the MI Special Editions) bodes quite well. Especially with all the old assets still available. I think people are going to to put off by 4:3 though. But I think Tim and Co are right about preserving the artistic integrity of the original. So expanding it is out of the question.
It would be awesome if this came out in 2014!!!!! This game brings back so many memories for me. I was about 12 years old when my mom was having her computer serviced at a local computer store. I went in with her and there was a wall of games at the far end of the store. She said I could go over and pick one out. I was scanning the wall when my eye was drawn to a box with a skeleton and other strange characters on it. The title was grim fandango. It looked interesting so that was what I chose, and when we got home I put it in the cd drive and watched the Lucas arts guy turn into a skeleton. I was instantly hooked. I can't wait to get my hands on it again, and play with my old friend Manuel Calavera. It's been too long.
I used to listen to the soundtrack having never played this game or anything. I am incredibly looking forward to finally being able to experience the game itself. And it's by Doublefine. Pretty pretty pretty pretty preeettty gooooood.
I haven't seen an official release date for the remastered version, but just please don't rush it if possible! Also to everyone disappointed, please listen to the people on the video. They do say that the PS4 version they show was basically a quick test in order to have it playable on the platform. A lot of stuff will be updated later on in development and they specifically mention those too.
That's amazing news that they got the source files and can re-render the cutscenes and I'm really excited about the possibilities the new renderer will offer. Now they just need to be able to get high resolution textures from those files, or re-draw the textures and this will be absolutely beautiful. I hope they can do similar stuff with the audio files.
I'll be honest, when I saw the announcement, I got up from my chair and cheered super loud too, pumping my fist into the air with a tear in my eye! And when I read Linux support, I completely lost it!
I totally appreciate the preservation of the original work, and value that approach. That said, I would love to have some toggle-able bells and whistles such as atmospheric effects, papers drifting in the breeze etc. etc. to help pretty up the environment. Broken Age, for example, really shone once it had a nice array of moving particles added to it's static backdrops.
This seems to be handled just the way I've thought it should be done. I'll absolutely be getting this. (Unless it's priced too high, in which case I'll just wait for a sale.)
I can completely understand wanting to keep the original design and look of the game but I feel that could be a better result to rebuild the game, kind of like how Just Add Water rebuilt Oddworld.
Well they are upping the res, doing better 3d models, but they want to keep the look of the game down pat. It's like the guy said, getting a blu ray of Casablanca. They want it to look as great as it can while still retaining the feel/style of the original. The worst thing they could do is pull a George Lucas, that's what happens when you start adding things and messing with things that weren't there. I haven't played the remastered Oddworld though so I do not know entirely what you mean.
gyloir He means they have COMPLETELY rebuilt the game up from scratch and it's amazing. I don't really know how Double Fine are going to remaster Grim Fandango that sizes up with todays standards using the original assets :S. I honestly thought they were going to just re-do everything. I hope they at least remake cutscenes etc
The Monkey Island remakes are the best remakes I've ever played, so if this is like that, I'd be all over it. Don't change anything big, but add touches to make it prettier, easier and more fun to play today.
Vkmies But even with the Monkey Island remakes, they still re-did everything. Re-painted the backgrounds and created new models for the characters. That's what I expected/hope they will do with this.
My only wish would be for 16:9 aspect ratio, but it sounds like it's going to stay 4:3. That's going to be a tough pill to swallow for a lot of people.
LusoTuber Widescreen monitors and TV's display at 16:9 ratio. At 4:3 ratio on a widescreen monitor or TV, there will be black borders on either side of the screen. You can see how that looks at 3:30 in this video.
***** Which is how it should be. I know what happens when you display a 4:3 aspect ratio on a widescreen TV. My point is that, just like in movies, if you make it 16:9 you're cropping visual information. I don't see the point in that. I'd rather have the whole picture with the OAR. Fortunately they are going to do that.
I asked Tim on Twitter but he never answered me because he thinks he's too high & mighty aka Mr.bigshot! (or probably just busy) Hey Tim, remember the GrimPuzzleDoc_small.pdf you posted on the Double Fine website yonks ago, which you removed later? (because of rights issue, you didn't own it) Will the Remastered version be a Director's Cut? (missing puzzles/scenarios added from the pdf document) Or both in one copy, i.e. original & extended director's cut, the game let's us choose between the versions? I remember Tim saying that they had to remove some of the scenarios and puzzles because of time constraints; hopefully this time around you have plenty. The world needs to know, answer me Tim!
Someone else asked similar question and Tim said that they won't be adding anything new. Content-wise the game will be the same, it'll just look prettier.
Tim has replied/reacted to tweets I've sent him before, and I'm nobody particularly special. He's probably just busy, or he's answered the question before/plans on addressing it more publicly in the future. Either way, I wouldn't take it personally.
I've never played this game, but I hear its a pain to run on modern computers, so I'm very happy about this. I recently completed Psychonauts, now one of my favourite games ever, so I'm very interested in Schafer's work.
It's actually really easy to run on modern computers, all you need is ResidualVM, which is an open-source program to run Grim Fandango and a few other of the old 3D-Adventures.
4:00 Mark goes on to talk about improving and updating the controls for today's standards. One of the trophies for this game says "Freak that...set them back if you want that gold trophy."...
Tim and his team produced the best adventure games in history. We need to buy his new games because an game studio need large sum of money to survive. Do not be tempted to download the games, the are all on steam and for the quality and work put in it they are quite cheap.
Necro tronic Why would you want that? I think it is actually nice to play and appreciate how things were done in that time. If they add a bunch of bullshit it won't be the experience that was intended. Higher res and better controls are two of the things that can be improved without damaging the core experience. I don't believe in stripping the subtlety of older games for remakes, because these days every fucking game is the OPPOSITE of subtle.
This is awesome, however I'd expect some smoothing over the original meshes. Modern graphic cards can handle a gazillion more vertices, so they shouldn't limit themselves to just squared characters.
Sure hope they don't make the point and click mandatory but only an additional option. Never got to play anything but a demo of GF in the day. So I'm looking forward to this game.
Ok, seriously. It's very early stages, the team themselves are still just guessing and researching. So everyone who acts like they know how good or bad the final product will be: calm the **** down.
Remastered: Using the source files to show it as it was originally intended (no compression) Remake: Start from scratch, redo everything from the voices to graphics engine, etc.
backslashio a remake can still use some old assets but yeah, basically has to be a totally new game. I'm honestly not sure of what would be best for GF.
Erdeniz Savaş Remastered is Improve Graphics and make HD details on the old game like some little graphics and sounds Remake Change the Whole Game with New Graphics New Sounds New Gameplay and more, but sometime they will copy a little gameplay from the old game, but yeah Remake is the better a lot from Remastered.
What about the translations that have already be done by fans for use with residualvm. We need to be able to include those translations in the remake!!! Like the Greek translation for example.
Been wanting to play Grim Fandango for a couple years now, never really got around to playing it. Now that there is a remastered version of the game coming out, i'll definitely pick it up. But come on, Tim.... Where's Psychonauts 2? I've been waiting since 2005 :\
PLEASE, PLEASE RELEASE THIS GAME ON GOG.com!!! IN THE WEBSITE'S WISHLIST IT CONTAINS LESS THAN 45,000 VOTES. PLEASE DOUBLE FINE RELEASE IT ON GOG WE HAVE BEEN STARVING FOR THAT GAME!!!
No, no, no. Grim Fandango doesn't play that fast, not if you're a fan who really loves it. So much creative detail poured into this with love it is wonderful to linger over.
***** They are starting to work on it. The fact that they managed to get the original version running on the PS4 is already an huge step. Optimization and remastering will come later.
It says something about Grim Fandango when the game gets one of the loudest cheers at the 2014 E3 conference.
True story. I was in art school in portland Oregon. I visited the studio Laika and Peter Chan Gave me a lecture on what it takes to make it in the industry. Windirstat! I love how DF's not ashamed to bare their innerworkings like that file hierarchy.
What a great insight into a part of the production process. I can't wait for this to hit the PS4.
I never played the original so when I first heard about this, I was a bit torn between being glad that I would finally be able to get this game and being sad that it looked even more like the original would never again be released.

There is a 16:9 widescreen mode on PS4.
But obviously its stretched when doing that, but works perfectly if borders arent your thing.
It would be awesome if this came out in 2014!!!!! This game brings back so many memories for me. I was about 12 years old when my mom was having her computer serviced at a local computer store. When they say its like a Blu-ray release of a classic I hope mean it, including extras like developer commentary, concept art viewer ect.
I love to see how much excited you all look to work on this. :)
I used to listen to the soundtrack having never played this game or anything. I am incredibly looking forward to finally being able to experience the game itself. And it's by Doublefine. Pretty pretty pretty pretty preeettty gooooood.

Beautiful to see those original cutscene assets. This is gonna be great!

Now they just need to be able to get high resolution textures from those files, or re-draw the textures and this will be absolutely beautiful. I hope they can do similar stuff with the audio files.
Shame there are no physical copies of the remastered versions. And no soundtrack.
Cannot wait! Man that brings me back to when times were a little bit easier and Lucas Arts games were fun factories.
times were easier, but games were super hard!
So this is a literal remastering using original assets, not creating new ones? Awesome!
If there is a finer adventure game out there, Ive never heard of it.
I'll be honest, when I saw the announcement, I got up from my chair and cheered super loud too, pumping my fist into the air with a tear in my eye!
And when I read Linux support, I completely lost it!
For those wondering, it's a console exclusive for PS4 & Vita cos Sony are funding it but it will release on PC & possibly smartphones and tablets too
Woah, didn't know this would be a series. Here's hoping there are no spoilers, never got a chance to play the game back in the day.
I totally appreciate the preservation of the original work, and value that approach. That said, I would love to have some toggle-able bells and whistles such as atmospheric effects, papers drifting in the breeze etc. etc. to help pretty up the environment. 3:30 wow even porting it to gamecube ;D

Aaron Carney and the monkey island remakes looked great in screenshots but the animation was stiff. I ended up playing them in original mode.
My only wish would be for 16:9 aspect ratio, but it sounds like it's going to stay 4:3. That's going to be a tough pill to swallow for a lot of people.
Why crop it to 16:9?
*****
So, you would prefer less picture?
LusoTuber Widescreen monitors and TV's display at 16:9 ratio. At 4:3 ratio on a widescreen monitor or TV, there will be black borders on either side of the screen. You can see how that looks at 3:30 in this video.

LusoTuber cropping is not the answer. adding background content is.
I'm defiantly going to buy it
I fucking love Grim Fandango

plus better controls, especially for PC. ;)
But Tim is better than you - you do realise that, right?
Maybe he is just busy, remaking a game you guys miss for so long.
Tim has replied/reacted to tweets I've sent him before, and I'm nobody particularly special. He's probably just busy, or he's answered the question before/plans on addressing it more publicly in the future. Either way, I wouldn't take it personally.
With all the advancements, I would love the myst treatment, drop pre-rendered and have everything in engine.
The remastered cutscenes look amazing and far less compressed. I love watching them.
I've never played this game, but I hear its a pain to run on modern computers, so I'm very happy about this. I recently completed Psychonauts, now one of my favourite games ever, so I'm very interested in Schafer's work.

Alnothur I tried it. It didn't work.
Unless it only works with physical copies of the disc...
Nah, I just have the game files on the harddisk here, too. So it must be something else in your case.
How did you like grim fandango?
4:00
Mark goes on to talk about improving and updating the controls for today's standards.
One of the trophies for this game says "Freak that...set them back if you want that gold trophy."...
Hopefully we will see this done to Full Throttle, one of my favorite games.
Excited!
Remaster or Remake, there's no way this could not be the definitive version of the best game ever made.
Tim and his team produced the best adventure games in history. We need to buy his new games because an game studio need large sum of money to survive. Do not be tempted to download the games, the are all on steam and for the quality and work put in it they are quite cheap.
I'm really hoping for a Psychonauts remaster too!
Lee Gauthier what is that program he's using near the end. I remember you using that. haha For file exploration.

The point and click controls are totally optional. We are trying to give as many options as possible so players can play however they want.
Ok, seriously. It's very early stages, the team themselves are still just guessing and researching. So everyone who acts like they know how good or bad the final product will be: calm the **** down.
Can someone explain the difference between "Remastered" and "Remake"? Will they bring something new or same game to PS4?
Remastered:
Using the source files to show it as it was originally intended (no compression)
Remake:
Start from scratch, redo everything from the voices to graphics engine, etc.
Remaster: Star Wars Special Edition trilogy
Remake: Johnny Depp version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
backslashio
a remake can still use some old assets but yeah, basically has to be a totally new game. I'm honestly not sure of what would be best for GF.

I know you said for all platforms ... but i have to ask anyway. Does that means PC version will be released as well?
Remastered version coming for Pc too? If not, that would be just weird...
So... what happened to Episode 1?
It was in June, back at the very first announcement
Been wanting to play Grim Fandango for a couple years now, never really got around to playing it. Now that there is a remastered version of the game coming out, i'll definitely pick it up.
But come on, Tim.... Where's Psychonauts 2? I've been waiting since 2005 :\

PLEASE, PLEASE RELEASE THIS GAME ON GOG.com!!!

4:3 remastering!
I'm hoping this gets a PC release. i would pay a LOT of money for that.
it does , ps4 , vita and pc.
Windirstat represent!
WinDirStat! Yay!
So, this guy at the end has Windows on his Mac?
yup
Can't wait
This is the best news ever! ^^
Cmon Tim! So much work for something that some old fan will replay in 3 hours! We want PSYCHONAUTS 2! Me wanna preorder! Me wanna play it!
No, no, no. Grim Fandango doesn't play that fast, not if you're a fan who really loves it. So much creative detail poured into this with love it is wonderful to linger over.
how bo you play it the game grim fandango
not a remaster?
from what i got it's basically a direct port so far with adapted controls, they didn't add the high res stuff yet
*****
They are starting to work on it. The fact that they managed to get the original version running on the PS4 is already an huge step. Optimization and remastering will come later.
PIXIES SHIRT !!
That Tobias guy is rather handsome.
Touch controls for tablets = no right click usage.
Not a good thing.
Kickstart Psychonauts 2! I would fund the s#@t out of it!
Thy for bringing one of the best PC games ever not to PC..
No antialiasing... that's a bummer
The game will use FXAA, which will look awesome.
This is great news, thanks!
Take my money already, DF!!!!
Please make it 16:9
Go watch some film noir movies and it'll make more sense.
3.3 Million Dollars
SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY
Entitlement, entitlement everywhere.
can't wait
