Thanks for the video! Quick comments: The Exchange is not a regular Disney or hotel store. It is an actual Post Exchange, which are shops run by the military exchange that act as military post and bases general shops (like a Walmart or Target). ALL exchanges are just called “Exchange” lol or Post Exchange (some people shorten it to “the PX”). Most every military post has at least one main Exchange and several gas station exchanges. The reason why you see products you’ve never seen before is because the exchange is stocked by the exchange and not by Disney. All exchanges are tax free. Also! You’re right that you’re technically on a military base. More specifically you’re on a Armed Forces Recreation Center. Shades of Green is a Department of Defense facility. This also explains the extremely high level of identification required for entrance!
My husband is active duty Coast Guard and we love staying at Shades of Green! We’ve stayed there twice and will be staying again next June. It’s a great Disney perk for military!
Staying here has been a tradition for my family and I for years prior to us moving here. Not many know about it, but it’s easily the most underrated resort on site. It’s awesome because veterans stay rates are based on rank. When it was open the meal plan and buffet was amazing, the pools are super cool, and they have a really nice bar with super well priced drinks. The bus system is great, just have to show your military ID and you’re good to go. It’s awesome that Disney has something like this in place for vets! I recommend it to all military and their families!

Per their website it is open to veterans during September and January: Salute to Our Veterans Through the Shades of Green “Salute to Our Veterans” program, all military veterans who have received an honorable discharge have an opportunity to vacation at Shades of Green during January and September. Reservations are subject to availability.
Proof of honorable discharge is required with a copy of a current DD-214 form. Rooms booked with this special promotion will pay the Category 3 rate. You may sponsor up to three rooms if you qualify for this promotion. Room rates are based on two adults occupying a standard room and four adults occupying the suites. We love Shades of Green! My Dad is retired military and we love staying at Shades! The rooms and resort are fabulous! This resort was a deluxe resort before the department of defense bought it! When the monorail is running from Poly we get a ride on the golf cart to the end of the property and walk to Poly and use monorail to get to MK and Epcot! We love the food choices at the resort as well! We will be staying at Shades in September! Glad you are getting to experience this! I stay there a lot because my Uncle and grandpa are either actively in it or retired. It is a really nice hotel. Kyle, you can get a great Happily Ever After view from there. I don’t think they pump in the music but you can play it through your phone you can see the fireworks really good!

Shades of Green originally opened as a Disney-owned resort known as the Golf Resort in December 1973. Disney renamed the resort "The Disney Inn" in 1986 to try and appeal to guests who may not have been golfers. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs were the mascots. The resort was outdone by other Disney properties that had opened over the years and the Shades of Green resort was created and leased by the Army in 1994. In 1996 the Army purchased the resort outright from Disney, however, Disney still owns the land the resort sits on.
We stay at Shades of Green! So happy you were able to visit. We thankfully always have more of a view balcony wise without it being blocked. The suites at Shades are awesome and huge. I'll let you know when we stay in one and you can come for another visit. Right now the Garden Grille is closed however it is a hidden gem. They offer meal plans for breakfast and dinner. The meals plans are buffet style however they do have a menu for outside of the meal plan as well. Each dinner night is themed and the food is great! It helps our family save quite a bit so I'm wishfully hoping it will be back by the end of September. The positives are for sure the room space and the location to MK. It is short walk to Poly to hop on the monorail. The downside is they could really use a few more updates (add a splash more of Disney) and the bus systems are not my favorite (the number of buses they offer in the mornings to the park). We don't mind Disney not being plastered everywhere and have figured out a good system for the buses. Hope you enjoy the rest of your stay!

Thank you Goldsworthy family! Also when I worked for Disney reservations back in 06-09 in training we were told about Disney designing and selling the property to the military. Those military ticket rates are great because the average military family and wages they simply can’t afford the vacation. Love this.

We kind of used the Polynesian resort for most of our transportation, especially coming back from a park. It is allowed by Disney. If you catch it right Shades of Green buses will work to. We loved the walk to Polynesian resort anyway. PS try the steak house down stairs wow

When our kids were little my In Laws would stay at Shades of Green when they went to Disney. I have never seen the resort by the time my husband and I went they belonged to Old Key West. Thank you for sharing and thank you to all our great military!!!

Active duty, reservists, and DOD employees, retired, and veterans ( I believe vets can stay in Sept and Jan only.. I want to stay as a veteran one of these days...) Room pricing is based on your rank. Vets and retirees pay the highest officer price.
From what I was told if your a disabled vet they don’t do the highest officer price especially if your 80% in service connected disabled. You can call them to see what the expectations are and if there is blackout dates. They are very nice and helpful.

Fantastic video! … I’ve known of Shades of Green, but this is the first time I’ve gotten a peek inside. This is why the Disney company is so special - going above and beyond for our military. Kyle, you nailed it, nice job.
Have fun there!!! Tip - you can walk to the Polynesian if you want to catch a boat or the monorail (when it opens again). Don't forget to see the other pool. It has a hot tub :)

Wow amazing ! I always wondered what shades of green was like. Who knew that the facility was for military and ex military ,I’m so so impressed! I’m not aware of anything like this for uk military! Also when I worked for Disney reservations back in 06-09 in training we were told about Disney designing and selling the property to the military.
Those military ticket rates are great because the average military family and wages they simply can’t afford the vacation.

Thank you Goldworthy family for your service. I have three kids in the Air Force, My son is in South Korea. Anyway stayed there a few times. Just a little advice. We kind of used the Polynesian resort for most of our transportation, especially coming back from a park. It is allowed by Disney. If you catch it right Shades of Green buses will work to. We loved the walk to Polynesian resort anyway. PS try the steak house down stairs wow

When our kids were little my In Laws would stay at Shades of Green when they went to Disney. I have never seen the resort by the time my husband and I went they belonged to Old Key West. Thank you for sharing and thank you to all our great military!!!

Active duty, reservists, and DOD employees, retired, and veterans ( I believe vets can stay in Sept and Jan only.. I want to stay as a veteran
one of these days...) Room pricing is based on your rank. Vets and retirees pay the highest officer price.
From what I was told if your a disabled vet they don’t do the highest officer price especially if your 80% in service connected disabled. You can call them to see what the expectations are and if there is blackout dates. They are very nice and helpful.

Fantastic video! … I’ve known of Shades of Green, but this is the first time I’ve gotten a peek inside. This is why the Disney company is so special - going above and beyond for our military. Kyle, you nailed it, nice job.
Have fun there!!! Tip - you can walk to the Polynesian if you want to catch a boat or the monorail (when it opens again).
Don't forget to see the other pool. It has a hot tub :)

Wow amazing ! I always wondered what shades of green was like. Who knew that the facility was for military and ex military ,I’m so so impressed! I’m not aware of anything like this for uk military! We had the Union Jack club in London ,which I stayed at in my military days ,but that’s the only place I’m aware of ! Stay safe !Thank you Goldsworthy family x x
