This is easily the best interpretation of a Beatles song I've ever heard.
I had the chance to see Kal David and Harvey Brooks when they were on the Fabulous Rhinestones--great band. This video shows the compelling sound, feel and dynamics of a great musician who is often overlooked.
He speaks through the guitar's voice with great feeling and nuance. I haven't seen him play in 46 years ! Brings back memories from another time. Nostalgia is bittersweet.
It has almost been that long since I saw Kal with the Rhinestones at Shaboo in CT...yes, sigh...bittersweet indeed now that he is gone.
I jammed with Kal at the Blue Guitar a couple times back around the time this was filmed. A bassist friend of mine said afterwards that playing with Kal did something to me. He meant it in a good way.
Kal is one of the world's BEST guitar players and a great vocalist, too!
There's not many video's that I will listen to immediately after it's done, but this was one of them. I've never even heard of this guy,but you can bet I'll be finding out more about him. The best version I've ever heard of this song-fabulous!
transcendent and flawless.. for the ages..
I saw Kal with the Fabulous Rhinestones a number of times. They'd perform at the Shaboo in Willimantic, CT, and also at Toads Place in New Haven. I saw him as a solo act as well. I enjoyed his music, and I have a couple of vinyl LPs of the Rhinestones I occasionally play. The song "What a wonderful thing we had" would have been big if they had the right management. Also, check out "Shadow across the land," when he was a member of the "Illinois Speed Press." Great song!
This interpretation makes me cry almost everytime I hear it. Such emotion from the heart. Kal is a great artist.
I met this cat at my gig in Boston last winter, I knew he was a player due his attention to my performance and his comment that I, "played in tune".
Anyway, I got him up to do a few tunes at the end of my gig- he was incredible, the real deal, voice, guitar, the entire package. I was thrilled to meet Kal and his wife; who is also an amazing singer.
Check him out in Boston at; Scullers on Thursday, September 29th, 2011.
He puts greet emotion in this song!!!!! Love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, what a killer performance! Super tasteful, classy, played from the heart - by an exceptionally good guitarist. I really regret now that I thought I had something better to do than go to his concert when he played in my city...
Watched him play so many times with The Fabulous Thunderbirds at The Shaboo Inn and other clubs around CT.... Love Kal and Miss Laurie!!!
This is my favorite cover of this song!
+Tom Long The Fabulous Rhinestones, no?
The Shaboo is in ashes and dead. Long live The Shaboo!!
I just watched Kal Daivd performing live at Toronto's Beaches Jazz Festival and he played, amongst all other great tunes, this one. It was phenomenal. He got me stunned right there. I would say, he is a true artist and he might not be that famous, like big names such as xxxxxxxxxxx, but he will give you goosebumps whenever and wherever you see him performing. He is more than good.
Not bad for a kid from Jeffrey Manor, Kal! Heard you on XFM yesterday. Outstanding! Glad the Blue Guitar is still around, after having helped design it with you.
Regards,
Burke Horner
Myself and friends enjoyed Kal with the Fabulous Rhinestones. We joke that his girl Lori was the "Yoko Ono" of the Rhinestones and was responsible for the group breaking up. Fun fact, Bob Leinbach, who played with them, went on to play with Orleans. They had a big hit with, "Love takes time."
All we ever listen to at my house is Kal David.
Saw this guy live. He is Awesome!
