Tiki drinks aren't supposed to be slushee frozen drinks. It's supposed to be the same way you did your mai tai. When a tiki drink calls for a "flash blend" or any sort of blend it means in a milkshake mixer and it's only supposed to be for no more than 5 seconds.

I know the Bum uses the term blender when referring to Don drinks, but Don used a Hamilton Beach Drink Mixer. Most likely a model 18 or 18-B during the 1930s (Bacardi and I believe Ron Rico gave bars 18-Bs with their name and recipes on them). You can pick a cheapo Hamilton Beach Model 729 at Walmart for roughly $25. Does exactly what’s intended for “blend on high for five seconds with crushed ice”.

I personally love Smugglers Cove’s version. The pimento dram fits so well into the drink.

Now this is a version I can get behind! Didn't really like your first take on it, but doing multiple versions of it just makes so much sense as there are so many good ones! I also like using some pineapple juice in my planter's punch.
I think, but I don't know how other viewers feel. you should do a lot more tiki content. I find that all of my favorite cocktails are tiki. Granted, I am a big rum drinker, so that kinda steers me to rum cocktails, and most famous tiki drinks are heavy on the rum. I would love to see you make a Pearl diver and a few variations of the zombie!

Ugh, it's already Tiki season again? I"m not really complaining, but just realized that I literally have one pour of each of my ingredients left. At least rum is relatively inexpensive compared to my winter time bourbon.

Using blender is classic way to do cocktails?

    • @dillonmcgraw7011

Yes, at least in classic tiki because you could make the drinks faster in a bar. The old recipes mention to only blend around 5 seconds with crushes ice, basically simulating a quick shake with crushed ice. This technique is known as a “flash blend” and is intended to properly dilute rather than to make the drink a slushy. I normally just shake with crushed ice anyway since the blender techniques are only more efficient for higher quantities of the same drink, I don’t really feel like cleaning my blender every time I want a tiki drink 😂

Don probably only used the blender for one or two classic tiki cocktails. Most would have been mixed with a barmixer (malt mixer) or shaken. The barmixer is basically a high speed swizzle. Chills and dilutes without grinding up the ice. Great tool, especially when you’re churning out tons of drinks.

Cru - shaan ... not Cru - san

Seeing you destroy that drink with the blender makes me cringe. Flash blend it with crushed ice in a spindle mixer for 5-7 seconds. That's it. Pour with a gated finish (if necessary depending on glassware) and top with more crushed ice. Making it into a slushy is just wrong, wrong, wrong. Traditional tiki drinks were never slushy. Slushies and frozen drinks didn't come until the fern bars of the 70s and 80s.

It’s a classic mistake but it makes the world of difference.
