I go for the darker sound on my tenor. Really surprised by your soprano-very dark for that instrument. Alto and tenor sounded great. You stumped me on the geography quiz. Got the Vermont and Georgia, but missed the alto stop. Nicely done and quite informative. Thanks!
They all sound good, but that custom dark mouthpiece on the tenor just speaks to my soul. LOVE it!
Wishing everyone good luck, the winner is surely going to enjoy a beautiful sounding mouthpiece
Hope upon hope! I have my fingers and tongue crossed!
Would love the dark in alto. Sounds great.
Thank you for this video. I absolutely love this. Those dark tones are definitely really soulful. ❤️🎷
I play a custom dark with a power ring on my Yang Tenor. The sound is so unbelievably warm and dark it's like playing a hug. I love this Jody Jazz Custom especially o!d standards and those great ballads from yesteryear.
Wow! I can really hear the difference of this dark mouthpiece! Thank you for also sharing about reed strength and how it affects the sound from bright to dark.
I am one year into the tenor sax and would like the tenor model for playing solos in a small group. Nice video, as always !
I like the Jody Jazz HR* Custom Dark 7 tip opening for alto sax. I love that dark jazz sound, especially on the alto and soprano.
That soprano has very nice color to it. Nice, warm, and dark. Gives it a wonderful mellow tone.
Finally someone explained nice and clear how the mouthpiece (in combination with the kind of read) can influence your sound. I had to check out what the 'baffle' is (as Dutch speaking guy), and this clarified a lot. I love the sound for all the saxophones, especially the soprano and alto. My soprano with standard mouthpiece doesn't invite me to play it a lot. So, if I had to chose between the three types, I'd go for the soprano.
FIrst - THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU for a GREAT explanation regarding baffle, chamber, etc. I've been trying really hard to understand those relationships - your discussion is excellent! As for which mouthpiece, I play tenor, and really love the "dark" sound of the HR* 7, with your tenor. I will NEVER gig with anyone - it's all private studio work. So I don't have to worry about being heard. I just need to worry about the sound that hits a microphone. THANK YOU AGAIN - for the detailed, clear, concise explanation about mouthpiece engineering!
Thanks David
Hi Jay, its the Jody Jazz HR* Custom Dark for me. I like a darker sound on the Tenor and a brighter sound on the Alto. Thanks for all of your videos!
What a great giveaway! I love the sound of that tenor, so that would be my choice of JJ HR Dark. Thanks Jay for the heads-up on this mouthpiece.
Thank you! To my opinion you are one of the very few saxophonists who genuinely understands how reed, mouthpiece shape and tip opening help shape the sound, and who can also explain it in simple terms. I'm an amateur player, Conn10M tenor with and OttoLink TM10*, which gives great flexibility of tone depending on choice of reed, though more brightness than your Jody HR* Dark. Also play a Super20 alto with a Bamber 8 Jazz mouthpiece, strangely this mouthpiece has an intermediate, twice angled rollover baffle in a large round chamber, it gives good projection and articulation, while still allowing for a dark sound in subtone style. Quite a forgiving mouthpiece on many vintage & modern saxes, works a treat on my friend's yanagisawa professional.
I like getting a darker sound out of my alto, enjoyed hearing Jay test the alto mouthpiece out.
Another great mp from JJ! Especially sweet on the tenor, to my ears.
Great video again Jay! Many thanks for the info and your good sound!
Jay I love how you give full explanation and description of those mouthpiece and reed setup to get a Particular Sound on your saxophone. Very important for saxophone players trying to get a particular sound. Great work my friend. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👍🏾💯🎷🎶
Thanks Jeffery!
As a jazz man, bright tones have always come naturally, but I would love to achieve a sound like yours someday. The tenor mouthpiece (my choice) sounds awesome.
Superb video ... thanks so much!
What a lush soprano sound, Jay!
Thanks for the detailed explanation on what design features in a mouthpiece make a darker or brighter sound, Jay. My fav would be the one I win (lol)!
This was a very good and informative video. I have Been looking for mouth prices with this exact sound . THANKS SO MUCH
Love your videos. You really inspire me. Thanks!
Awesome! Thank you!
Yep, got these on alto and tenor. That’s the signature sound of the mouthpiece. Man I love these Custom Dark pieces. Nice job Jay 👍🏼 (and Jody and team! )
thanks!
Jay I have this mouthpiece and for my Yani WO2 tenor sax it's perfect. It has a great fat and dark sound and very easy to play.
Great information. I'm definitely going to experiment now I know what to look for to give me a choice of sound from my alto.
Thanks a lot for this video. I have been trying to get a darker tone from my alto sax; I will have to try some harder reeds. I know I would choose alto mouthpiece. Cheers!
I love you playing the soprano sax, I hope that you will have more videos with it.
I love dark sounds while playing. It gives me joy 😂 😂 😂
The mouthpieces are all good. And the explanation really helped clear things up. Been using the same mouthpiece that came in my student saxophone for so long.
Glad it helped!
The tenor JJ HR Dark mouthpiece was very nice. Very clear. That is the one I would choose.
I'd go with the Tenor! That dark sound kills me 😍 You nailed it!
Thanks for the great content, as usual!
This would be a nice win! I am new to your on line lessons and am loving them. Such a great instructor and you make learning this instrument understandable and easier. I am a sucker for that darker sound.
Thanks! glad to hear it.
The HR* has always been a mp I’d like to try the sound is always pleasant to me. Good job demo’ing these.
Thank you for the channel. Im thinking to purchase a sax for first time. I have always wanted a sax since young but in the 80s they were too expensive and got a clarinet instead. I then switched to trumpet in middle school and played into high school but stopped soon after. I played the drums in church for many years but it's been well over 15 years since then. I'm a bit nervous to try the sax but I think I'll give it a try. These videos are great for anyone looking to play the sax. I'm eager to get back to the joy of playing a musical instrument. Thank you for the videos. The alto darker sound 👌
Jody jazz HR* custom dark for Alto fits my ears like a glove. Hope it would fit my sax too...😜 Thanks for the great videos. I bought a beginner alto from your test, and haven't regretted it a second. Love working with the sound, and learning the music.
Thanks for the videos and for your giveaways.
As a newbie just starting out (again) I would love to produce a dark jazz sound on my sax like that on the Alto custom dark 7* tip opening. Just lovely.
Only just getting into jazz, so unable to name any songs there, but starting to love mellow jazz particularly.
Great playing as usual, Jay!
Alto: Moonlight in Vermont; soprano: Do You Know What it Means to Miss New Orleans?; tenor: Georgia On My Mind.
All three sound great, but if I played soprano, I’d go for one of those in a heartbeat!
By the way, I’d love to hear your impressions on the Vandoren V16 large chamber for tenor. I’ve been playing on that mouthpiece for a while now and absolutely love it.
I have one of the original V16s they made for tenor before they did the larger chambers. I haven't tried one of those L chambers yet.
@@bettersax I know you've got a ton of mouthpieces and that you're always trying new ones, but I'd be willing to bet you'd be impressed by the V16 LC. I have the T6L and love its darkness and versatility (and for less than half the cost of the JJ Custom Dark. Having said that, JJ pieces are awesome, without question---the HR* 6* for tenor is my number two favorite, after the Vandoren). Thanks for your all your great content, Jay!
The tenor version has a beautifully rich, mellow sound - it’s what I constantly aspire to.
My choice is the Tenor it has the sound I have in my head. Way to go! Good Job !
Recently retired sax/bass clarinet player trying to get back into it. I've always leaned towards a darker sound. Currently, on tenor I'm switching between the (very) old hard rubber Brilhart Great Neck Streamline given to me by my teacher 45 years ago and a recently re-discovered hard rubber Otto Link (WT) that was given to me by a bandmate 25 years ago. I would really like to try the tenor version of this mouthpiece to see how current designs hold up against my older ones. Sounds great for you and that's coming from one Queens College grad (not a music major) to another!
Ooo I’d love the Jody Jazz HR* Custom Dark 7* tip for my tenor! That’s the sound I want. I just started playing, binged all your videos and purchased all your courses. I already see so much improvement within this last week thank you so much, Jay!
Great to hear thanks!
This would go so well with my Vintage LaFleur alto. Thanks for all the tutorials and reviews!!
I think this is exactly what I need for Soprano! It wouldn't hurt on the Tenor too! If I win, it'll be a hard choice! Great video as usual Jay. :)
these mouthpieces sound great, even if i may not have the best ear for "dark vs bright" in sax tones. usually i prefer a brighter sound because i got into tenor through clarence clemons' playing for the E street band, but i have to say i love how these mouthpieces sound !
What mouthpiece are you using for the "Clemons Sound " ? Thanx
@@danandyvonneandreasen804 unfortunately i dont actually have a mouthpiece that sounds like it, i just like the way it sounds. im not sure what kind of mouthpiece he used
Moonlight in Vermont, Autumn in New York, and Georgia - Love that HR 7.5 Tenor. I've played with reed choice too. The Alexander DC is darker than the standard Alexander. My Lawton 7* with a 3 Alex DC reed gives my alto a darker sound but still can project with the Lawton. I have found a range of dark to bright, soft and loud reponses on my Theo Wanne Gaia 3 Tenor 8*
Great my kind of Alto sound
Just started my sax journey about a month ago have a alto with Yamaha 4 c which is great for me at the moment would love to upgrade in the future
Very lovely information
Thanks for a great video. I would love the alto one. 😊
Very useful thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
The mouthpiece of my choice out of these three would be the one for alto.
Enjoyed your sax playing....great sound and style😎
Awesome sound!! Think I’d like to try it on alto!!
Wow! What a sound!
I really feel the dark tenor sound, that is the way I like a tenor sax to sing. I have a Jody Jazz HR* for my alto and I love it, the new HR Dark for my tenor would be sweet!
I always learn something new from your videos.Thank you!
Glad to hear that!
Hello Jay and thanks for the nice video, I'll go for the alto one
I would love a Custom Dark tenor piece! Definitely has a nice tone to it.
I'm just waiting on the Tenor Bettersax Jay!!!!
Great tenor sound!
Awesome, wonderful video Jay!
Thanks Daniel
I would have decide on the Tenor JJ HR Dark w/ a 7 tip opening. However I love them all.
Always love to hear that tenor sound! Great video as always! Would love to get my hands on one of those pieces on day!
thanks!
👍
Great sound in the Tenor mouthpiece, would be the gift of the year
That Jody Jazz Tenor Sax mouthpiece has a great full sound-Sound is incredibly fat and smooth
It's amazing how much perspective matters when determining tone. To me the alto tone was on the brighter side with a nice buzz to it.
Thanks for all you do!
Tenor Hr dark would be awesome if I won.
Nice vid, good luck everyone!
Jay: Loved hearing you play, "Moonlight In Vermont," "Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans>" and "Georgia" (on my mind). Great old tunes that sound so good on the sax. Thanks!!
Yes I love the old tunes.
Hello Jay, beautiful Moonlight in Vermont. The sound is great, I am looking for a dark mouthpiece, I guess you have the ultimate mouthpiece to show us. Great stuff.
Alto sounds awesome with this one!!
Great videos made me jump back into music, just found an awesome used cannonball tenor and shes a beauty. Need to get the jody jazz custom dark mouthpiece for sure.
That's sounds amazing! I'm playing Jody jazz Hr* 8 for tenor sax and I really like it. I hope to get the jody jazz Hr dark custom 8* for tenor sax someday.
I adore the sound from the tenor you played, it's an amazing mouthpiece but in the hands of a player like your self it sounds legendary. I'd go for the tenor 7 by far, but it's probs because I biyas as I'm a tenor man myself. Respect to you Jay.
thank You
I’ve been playing tenor for a while now but that custom mouth piece is just the one I need it will make my sound SO much better
nice video. I just picked up the custom dark 7 opening for my yani aw01 alto and playing it with either 2.5 or d'addario 2H reeds. love it but struggle a little bit to get it sounding as sweet as my standard HR* above top D. Thinking about picking up one for my yani t902 tenor also. Keep up the good work.
The Jody Jazz HR* 7 tip opening and 2.5 Reed would really make me happy to try and play with. And i’ve always wanted to play dark sax and hopefully now i’ll get the chance!
Tenor is my choice... uh, because I play tenor! I'm more of a screamer/rocker, so I'd love to see if/when Jay does a "bright reed" video/contest. But I can enjoy playing quietly, too. Thx Jay for all of this - I enjoy being part of the Better Sax Empire.
I need the soprano mouthpiece! I love it! Good luck to you all
Wow, new mouth piece would be great! Good luck everyone.
6 in Alto
Jay, that was a very pleasant tone on tenor!
A Jody Jazz HR custom really holds a nice flow of melody and rhythm
The tenor 7* sounds terrific, my choice. Actually, I'm looking for a not so loud, dark tenor mouthpiece for duos with a guitarist playing mostly standards. Sounds like this fits the bill.
I bought this mouthpiece for alto with a 6 opening and just love playing it, especially when I am practicing at home at lower volumes. The difference I noticed immediately when switching from my Meyer was with the highest notes which now sound so sweet and never shrill. A real pleasure to play.
very useful advice.
I just received my HR Dark tenor. I love it.
Jody Jazz mouthpieces are the greatest. I play on the HR 7M. I really enjoyed listening to all, but especially liked the alto.
Looks up...
Hey, I’M in Georgia. Maybe that’s a sign!
Good luck everybody! I’d love to have that mouthpiece for my alto.
Thanks Jay and Jody Jazz!
Hello Jay... 🙂
...thank you for another great video, your channel content, comparisons and giveaways are really appreciated by your followers.
JJ HR*'s are great mouthpieces and the Custom Dark versions sound wonderful... l play alto and soprano... would love to play them on both. 🎷
thanks!
Enjoyed them all, but the tenor really sounded great!
Man that Jody Jazz hr* custom dark sounds amazing. Been looking for a darker sound as a newer tenor player, this would be great!
Im surprised how soft and dark the soprano sounds!
Nice one again Jay, beautifully presented as always and fantastic sound on soprano, alto and tenor. I don't have any trouble getting a dark sound as that's what I always get on all the horns. The places you hinted at in your latest video are: Vermont,New Orleans and Georgia.
Best Wishes,
Marius
YOU ARE A GOOD TEACHER THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR MUSICAL EXPERIENCES .. GREETINGS FROM CARACAS VENEZUELA
Sounds nice! I play alto and like that sound, but prefer it on the other two saxophones that I don't own.
Hi Jay, if it’s not to late I’d like to throw a hat in the ring for an alto mouthpiece. Not for me but for my 8th grade son. He has been putting in some excellent efforts for about 2-1/2 years. In addition to some core music fundamentals, I have been focusing mostly on breath, embouchure, tone, pitch and just good practice habits with him and he is doing great. I have had him on my old S-80 C* for a couple of years and I am just continually impressed by his outstanding, solid tone quality and sense of pitch. He blew me away when he was only about a year into playing, when I was doing one of my lessons at home with him and I had my horn out so we could do some slow tempo focus on rhythmic meter and he was pitch matching on the fly! We had never worked on it and he was a natural. He has a good sense for the fundamentals and a good head on his shoulders.
I am very proud of him Jay. His dedication is great and we are lucky to have a nice school music program with impressive community support and in the humble opinion of this father, he deserves to be rewarded. It would be nice if we could gift one of these ourselves, but our budget at this time just can’t swing it.
Anyway, thank you for your drive and efforts in sharing your talents and obvious love for this fantastic Avenue of expression and fulfillment!
Warmest and best regards for you and yours and best wishes to stay safe and healthy.
P.S. I forgot to mention he (my son) produces a wonderful, rich, well developed “dark” sound.
Whoah soprano with a dark tone is really interesting. It all sounds like the Taxi Driver sax theme!
