When I met her, she and John were so lovely to someone who was just a simple student. Knowing she could be that gracious makes this so very talented woman even more special.
One of the greatest of all songs from a musical gets the royal treatment here from one of the finest female singers of our time. Up until recently so I have heard she was still giving live performances but now at age 94 even she must be slowing down! I was lucky to hear her LIVE twice in the 1970‘s & Cleo remains unique in every respect: interpretation, vocal virtuosity, & an amazing variety of styles unmatched by any other musical artist that I have experienced. Even perhaps an over exposed piece like SEND IN THE CLOWNS 🤡 takes on a new dimension when interpreted by her.
Showboat is full of songs like this (Can't Help Loving That Man, Make Believe, Why Do I Love You, You Are Love and the greatest of them, Old Man River) that have become standards for both men and women. Today, you're lucky if any Broadway show has 1 song of this caliber let alone 6.
better every-time i hear it and that's going on too many years to speak of. Just the best. So glad people are able to discover this truly gifted artist. Bravo for the post!
So glad to have found this recording! I actually saw her in Showboat. Being a Canadian and rather new to the famous names in Britain at that time (& no internet ha ha) I didn't appreciate who she was at that time. But this song sent tingles especially when her voice went as high as it did. I was fortunate to get back stage afterwards and get her autograph. Thank you again for posting this.
voice and interpretation just spectacular, what a songstress, wow
Chair de poule... I love her because she's wonderful

Hearing this in 2019...Still so special to hear this song from this accomplished individual!
This record is a masterpiece.

Oh my gosh we have been so lucky to have lived in Johnny and Cleo's time.
...I was fortunate enough to see the "Showboat" revival in 1971 - miss Laine was simply stunning!
Perfection

My boyfriend is a 'bill'... This so g is just so perfect!
Our greatest popular singer. Dame Cleo is still singing, although now in her 80's.
One of the great masters.
Cleo was the first mixed raced actress to play Julie in Showboat. Wish I could hear 'Can't Help Lovin' That Man'

oops, it was "'Can't Help Lovin' That Man" where she took off in the vocalization. Wow.
Helen Morgan is still better at this song
