The sad part about not just tormod, but muarim and vika, is that ALL three of them are incredibly good with investment, (especially vika) but trying to invest in these units is always going to be a long tedious process involving gutting like 10 levels of experience given to your units that NEEEEEEEEED it in fe10
I used vika. btw. vika operates like a truly monstrous variant of naesala, with nearly maxed speed and strength. she's incredibly good, her growths are nearly perfect it's just highly problematic to get her going due to time investment/the fact you need to gimmick train her untransformed on 2. TWO chapters
I mean the gap between chapter 16 -> to chapter 20 is actually also like, 8 maps to be fair. Cause of Serene's. Tormod also, can at least use Staves unlike Calill. 10 heals (3/30 wExp) +1 arms scroll (pretty abundant) is enough for Physic. That is not a hard investment, imo. The Thunder rank is also 1 arms scroll away from Bolting after a promotion... but two scrolls investment _is_ a bit weird. Especially when you're likely dumping over 1k bonus exp on him if you want a consistent, 1-rounding magic stat. My main critical factor is that combat exp is a different exp pool than bonus exp, and he's down ~12 chapters of live combat exp to Soren in particular. Earlygame exp is spread between both worse units and less units, than later combat exp is. 1 level on Titania or ~11 on Soren or Ike is also like super bExp-ratio inefficient if you were to "overkill" Titania-steamrolls on the baby maps... Having a strong Boyd (or a plausibly strength screwed Oscar) isn't as potent on a strategic level to a strong Soren, as they have role-overlap to op units. With Illyana's join time there are also _huge number_ of other underleveled units fighting for babying and bExp. Mia, _Marcia, Mist,_ Rolf, _Kieran, Brom,_ Nephenee, Zihark. So if you dislike attempting early-combat exp on Soren (maybe in an ironman challenge), imo, Tormod is the next strongest choice for overall army power. Tormod isn't bExp fighting with anyone who _joins_ after chapter ~14 for the rest of the game at least.
A pretty good case could be made for RD Tormod to be the best (Anima) Mage in that game, because at least he's great for a few chapters which is more than can be said for a lot of the mages that have more available chapters but less usage in them. I really just wish he came back in Part 3.
The anima mages in RD are just so weird. Tormod is great for 3 chapters and then doesn’t exist for the rest of the game, Ilyana is decent for about twice as long and then pretty poor afterwards, but has amazing availability. And Soren has substantially better availability than Tormod but is just mediocre the whole time, mostly justifying his deployment on account of lack of better options. It’s genuinely difficult to say which of the three is the “best” one, when they all have pretty clear downsides. Tormod does definitely feel the strongest when you have him though, obviously.
@@hrr2b239Yeah you're underrating soren heavily here he is clearly the best mage. Great affinity, innate adept, one of the best support partners for one of the best combat units in the game(Ike) and it's very easy to get them to A rank. He caps mag, skill and res very fast ESPECIALLY with transfers he will cap mag and res near instantly. From there you can fix his biggest problem with bexp to secure speed in his level ups. Yeah he will suffer from his caps but so does like everyone else in the mercs plus, we all know objectively speaking haar is always going to be the best master crown canidate so no reason to hold that over just soren when it effects every other greil merc as well.
I definitely agree that Soren is the best investment project out of all the mages, don’t misunderstand me there. I just don’t really think that investing in Soren is a good idea in the first place. My above comments were mostly made with using the three mages as filler units in mind. Yes, Soren can support Ike, but he faces some pretty stiff competition from Mia in this role who is a much better Bexp target as her lategame potential outshines Soren by a large amount. While it’s true that the Greil Mercs don’t have as thin of an exp pool to pull from as the Dawn Brigade does, I don’t think it’s so plentiful that investing in a late game chip bot is a great idea. The payoff for training Soren just does not seem worth the investment to me. On difficulties aside from HM, sure, exp management is extremely loose and stat thresholds are more forgiving, so that sounds reasonable. I’m just not very impressed by his hard mode performance to say he’s a good target for long term investment, though admittedly a better one than the other mages
@@hrr2b239The mia point is pretty good but I mean most of Ike's support partners need his support not the other way around(Boyd is another good example although he doesn't have the spd to make use of the extra attack from doubling instantly like Mia). Ike's str and prfs make his damage is enough to one round most things anyway and his bulk is good he has the earth affinity innate so he's always gonna be decently dodgy he doesn't really need it anywhere but yeah she does benefit more and mia is better. I was just trying to say Soren can still work like if you're gonna use a mage it's going to be soren and I have found having a second staffer can be nice later in the game. Like part 4 oliver's mansion for example having someone to restore Ike while being capable of combat is very nice. The enemies are also still relatively dangerous and since Ike's army is conisdered to be the best place for cav units you're prob inevitably going to have you're army split up having a insane range max heal physic staffer that can do combat and free up someone's turn is nice. Another example I can think of is in the first tower map if you want to rush fliers like Haar to kill the status staffers having someone besides miccy to physic or being able to possibly conserve a fortify use and having an extra restore/ward user is nice. But yeah he's decent but I feel like people shit on soren a bit too much he turns out relatively good for me. This is coming from someone who never invested stat boosters into him by the way besides sometimes the robe from chapter 1 but he is the best user of it I think. (also wow this was a lot shorter in my head)
One of the funniest thing i ever done in PoR is making Tormod a Walking missile Silo. give a lot of Bexp, support him with Calil and Devdan for those juici +5 in magic, Give him the boots and the Knight Ring. and then making him a siege tome expecialist thanks to his nice Str growth, doing a lot of "hit and run" tactics One shoting bosses at the start of the level, or made him agro.
Tormod's cool and all, but I'm not going to _not_ use Soren, and I'm not going to bench one of my two staffers before they all start promoting anyway, and honestly I'm probably going to use Ilyana too, because why not, she's pretty free for the two maps that she needs to become a capable combat unit anyway. So, do I need what is at this point in the game a fourth mage, that joins late, and has frankly even more mediocre growths than the other mages in Mediocre Mage Emblem? Nah. Not even Celerity can make up for that. I mean, sometimes I'll use him anyway, but when I do, it's because I'm going even more overboard on mages than I usually do and am running him _in addition to_ Soren, Ilyana, and Rhys.
What really makes me like Tormod as a unit is the speed growth. It can actually matter and lead to doubling certain enemies that Soren or Ilyana won't, though this is still up to RNG. Celerity also helps him keep up on less dense maps, and can even pair with the Knight Ring to keep him safe on denser maps when the other mages would have to risk being hit (more relevant on Maniac Mode)..
yeah like i remember finding tormod fine; i dont hold that as gospel because that memory is from a long time ago with much sloppier play, but yeah i remember him being fine
Soren is best boy and best mage in all games he appears, so Tormid never had a chance. Although Tormod is super helpful in RD part 1, so he gets points for that.
The true brain geniuses know that you invest in Tormod and give him the Boots and Knight Band so you can have him roleplay as Azel on that one bonus map with FE4 music.
I know this kind of applies to all mages, but the real niche and reason I wish I used a mage (not a Sage) in POR (and really, if it wasn't for this, I'd only use them early on, like, not past the Oliver Arc), and that's that you get 2 precisely 2 staff units through whole game until near the end, and they die instantly if you don't dump tons of bonus EXP/grind with them. There were multiple chapters where I REALLY wish I didn't have to use Rhys, especially.
Sure, you *can* use Tormod late game in FE10 if you really want to, but I think it needs to be more emphasized how bad an idea that is, at least if you're playing on Hard. Not only does he have an incredibly long way to go to become even functional, he also is in an awful class for late-game combat. Enemies just have so much Res, and even if you do train him up somehow, he's not going to one-round things without proccing Flare. However, he can use Meteor to open a door in 4-4. Value!
If I don’t plan on using the Master Seal and/or Rhys and Mist die in an Iron Man, giving Tormod 3 levels and a master seal and then using him as a heal bot isn’t too bad. Getting his Staff rank up is a bit of pain for his join time, but that movement (especially if you equip knight ring) can make it worth it.
We're using him in the 5 player RD draft race we are doing as a unit who can help beat earlygame/who solos 4-4 with just bexp because oh god do we need units for that
The thing is Torgod in fe9 can do things as the secondary or primary seige tome user that other units simply can't. There are a ton of seige tomes in fe9 and Tormod can use a seige tome AND move 8 spaces. This gives him 18 effective range, which is the most in the game. Shovability and Rescuability are underrated here, you are thinking "slower units need to keep up" but what if you .. just didn't use slower units. Then tormod's shovability means he can move past your cavs if need be, or if you do something like Shove Reyson 5 times> Rescue tormod w/marcia>Dance>Drop tormod you have the ability to cover 41 tiles in 2 turns. The fact that cavs can't be rescued is a pretty big deal in Tellius. Also while it's true that tormod is only good for about 2.5 maps, that's more than you'd think, Caineghis is good for 4 maps, and people think he's really good, Sothe is a good unit for 6 maps and people put him among the best units in the game. The reality is RD is like 3 really short games jammed into one, so a unit with functionally "perfect availability" has 12 non-defend maps before tower (boyd). Tormod get's shafted because his good part happens all in a row in the middle of the game where people forget about how many actions he took.
Honestly my thoughts on tormod is he is unfortunately one of the units in the why bother category he not terrible or anything it's just what's the point to use him other than Novelty or favoritism but hay i ain't immune to using characters out of favoritism to so use whoever you want.
ok, funny story on this...well kinda but its illyana, in both games she just had max stat for me, like i dont know how but she just had best level ups for me and just had perfect stats, all stats green glowing and just...how? what are the chances for that? she was not even max level if i remember right from like...10+ years ago
Tormod is not useless thanks to his special ability in FE9. Because the reality is that without it he would be basically useless. People use the first to ignore the second when they really shouldn't.
While I do think there's a legitimate niche to Boots + Meteor Tormod if you're willing to do that to shave off a turn or two, I mostly agree. He should definitely join at LEAST 2-3 levels higher (honestly with his plotline, some sort of paragon thing would not be out of place, but that's just cause I think he's cool), even if his bases weren't all that much better with it. Solid unit with a VERY fun niche, but definitely not necessary. Fun to one round Shiharam with, though.
I used him in my first FE9 playthrough and loved him but of course not everyone will use him and love him and that's kind of the issue with a lot of fire emblem
I barely remember him honestly. I've only played FE9 once and I benched him immediately. I also thought Illyana sucked, but Soren was amazing (and probably promoted by the time Tormod showed up but idr) so....I didn't need him. I also didn't use either of the pre-promoted Sages because they had knives and not staves and I also thought that sucked lol. I also never finished RD because I hate its structure so I forgot Tormod was even in part 1.
Movement is the most important stat in any game, from chess to strategy to action games. It gives defense, utility and often as you cannot hit what you cant reach and this goes both ways. It is often a restricted stat thats hard to improve, but Tormod comes in with FREE BOOTS, it is worth investing things that could get HIM over thresholds that other units can meet but that DONT have the extra movement to utilize it. I may be a speed freak but Tormod is worth it imo.
That's fine and all but if you don't have the combat to make use of that movement then it ranges to helpful sometimes to near useless. Why do you think in most fe games you're early flier is some weak pegasus knight? To offset their flexibility and it's also why it's generally a good idea to give you're stat boosters to you're early flier like Vanessa, Marcia/Jill PoR, Jill RD, Florina to name a few.
Tormod is not worth using in Radiant Dawn after part 1. I have never used Tormod in PoR. He shows up underleveled and I already have 2 good mages. His Celerity skill is interesting, but I would rather use Illyana or Soren in PoR, and maybe Calil.
Wait did i just spot a light mage lvl 7 with only 18 HP? Lmao, i already heared the game features a shit load of characters but they really done did it with the meme units here
PoR Tormod is one of my favorite characters gameplay-wise because he's one of the more "fun" units you can use. You only touched on it for a bit in the video, but Tormod as a unit is the closest you will get to a Mage Knight in PoR. Clarity gives him movement, the Knight RIng gives him Canto, and he has access to both Magic and Staff usage when he promotes. He essentially is a MK who traded +1Mov for no Cav weakness and -1 Inventory Slot (due to KR). If you do invest into "Mage Knight" Tormod, he can serve as another high move healer like promoted Mist and Elincia. Due to Clarity, he's one of the better units for the KR. Most units that have high movement already have Canto, leaving most of your options to Laguz units. Tormod not only benefits from it with his high mov, he has range to chip and dip enemies. Mages don't want to risk getting hit, but Tormod allows you to be riskier thanks to Canto + his high mov. The way "Mage Knight" Tormod is handled feels generally earned. He joins at a time where you either need to invest kills into him, or feed him bonus exp that could go to other/better units. However, he's also the only one that can mimic a Mage Knight well, and you don't just get everything without some investment. He needs to be promoted to heal, so he needs to work off of a E Rank in Staffs. You still need to get the Knight Ring from Naesala, and that's basically the end of midgame. He could use stat boosters to be more efficient, but that's still a large investment. Overall though, Tormod is fun, definitely interesting to do a playthrough where the goal is to make the best Tormod. As for RD Tormod, literally the best example of unit availability. Would have been great for him to stay, but he doesn't, and that makes me sad. Also the best example of skill distribution. His personal skill is Clarity? Take that off to him and give it to someone else. Meg would benefit from the skill more than him since she can actually be deployed past Part 1.
Eh there's like only 3 maps in which you kill bosses to end the map immediately after which your mages already promoted, so you're massively overestimating how useful siege tomes are, nvm how none of the mages have enough stats that they one round any boss so it's not like they can actually get the boss kill You also massively overestimate rescue, it's a B rank staff which takes ages for Any mage to get and doesn't have many implications when it exists, furthermore you already have Rhys with 14 mag base C rank staves or elincia who can fly and has A rank but just needs bexp for her 80% mag growth since her mag base is lacking, otherwise why would you go out of your way to train your mages for rescue lol

@@hrr2b239 soren isn't amazing but he is clearly the best of them. comparing him to ilyana is pretty comical.
I love ALL ActualLizard videos!!!! ❤
7 minutes in and all im thinking is "yeah but he go fast"
The fact that Tormod never exiles any graveyards is a huge lore fail IMO.
Honestly an early promo Tormod running around as a psudo Troubador sounds like an interesting use case.
yeah like i remember finding tormod fine; i dont hold that as gospel because that memory is from a long time ago with much sloppier play, but yeah i remember him being fine
6:13 which is still more mt than any non S rank tome
I noticed that the forge weapon names were alcoholic drinks lol.
I did a run I'm FE10 where I put all mages I had in the tower... yeah Tormod didn't turn out great in that run lol
10 years ago, I was right. Justice for tormod!
LMAO yes, Tormid!!! I was waiting for that since thenthumbnail
The chad 7mov Tormod vs the virgin 5 mov Soren.
ok, funny story on this...well kinda but its illyana, in both games she just had max stat for me, like i dont know how but she just had best level ups for me and just had perfect stats, all stats green glowing and just...how? what are the chances for that? she was not even max level if i remember right from like...10+ years ago
Tormod is not useless thanks to his special ability in FE9. Because the reality is that without it he would be basically useless. People use the first to ignore the second when they really shouldn't.
Tormod can functionality be a mage knights if you give him the knight ring
Tormod is a god dam child! Get him off of the battlefield!!!!!!
Do you pick a theme for your Forge names each game? I notice the drink name forges in the footage
Yeah, recently I've been doing themes, in RD right now I'm doing breakfast foods
@@actuallizardDo you have Mimosa in both games then? :P
RD Tormod is funny
I love him I wish they would let m have him for more than four minutes 😭
And so did the devs!
...which is how 4-4 happened
Wait did i just spot a light mage lvl 7 with only 18 HP? Lmao, i already heared the game features a shit load of characters but they really done did it with the meme units here
So idk much about path of raidance, but in raidant dawn hes actually a bit better than you'd think.
Just master seal him at level 10 and make him a staff bot.
In Radiant Dawn Exalted he's pretty damn good :D Has innate paragon, better availability, and the fire mage line from T2 upward in Exa has Canto!
Kinda weird just promoting something that's only tangentially related to the topic and not at all interacting with the video whatsoever tbh
C’mon my guy TorMID was right there!
That's the award I give him in the video :P
@@actuallizard Well this is embarrassing...
Hi Lizard!
Tormod might be mid, but this channel isn't.
Eh there's like only 3 maps in which you kill bosses to end the map immediately after which your mages already promoted, so you're massively overestimating how useful siege tomes are, nvm how none of the mages have enough stats that they one round any boss so it's not like they can actually get the boss kill
You also massively overestimate rescue, it's a B rank staff which takes ages for Any mage to get and doesn't have many implications when it exists, furthermore you already have Rhys with 14 mag base C rank staves or elincia who can fly and has A rank but just needs bexp for her 80% mag growth since her mag base is lacking, otherwise why would you go out of your way to train your mages for rescue lol
Tormod? The guy with the crypt? He's pretty good in any deck that likes playing cards from the graveyard, like Karador and many zombie decks.
Tor-mid😂😂😂
8 minutes and no comments yet? sad, you're falling off smh smh
