Hi John. Nice one! Modern EXCEL solves a lot of these problems with UNIQUE, FILTER, SORT, SORTBY, etc. But, nice to know lots of ways to get the job done. Thanks for sharing :)) Thumbs up!!

Hello Wayne, do you think it's possible to filter a pivot table with an ActiveX combobox and Excel formulas?

So so right as usual Wayne. I recorded this footage before I had Excel 365 and as I was editing it I was thinking how much simpler this would be for those with modern Excel. I suspect there will be a lot of people having to use this sort of technique for a while yet though.....if employers could see how much time 365 could free up they would jump to it straight away.

@@Ifritlordofire Hi.. John can confirm.. but I think with a Pivot Table, your best bet is to filter using the built in capabilities such as field dropdowns, Slicers and Timelines. ActiveX comboboxes and EXCEL formulas are best for worksheet based manipulations, unless the ActiveX comboboxes and or EXCEL formulas are used to pass information to VBA to then programmatically do the Pivot Table filtering. The Pivot Table feature is really meant to bypass VBA and give the user the ability to do filtering, data pivoting and reshaping on the fly with the native features of EXCEL, without the need of programming in VBA which is how people did it before Pivot Tables. John.. your thoughts? Thanks for the question.. good luck and Cheers!!

🎯 If you want to look unprofessional then leave the blank rows in your dropdown lists. Otherwise, learn this technique and be proud of your dropdown lists - learn to remove the blanks and keep them tidy.

No worries! I love making these videos and wish I had more time to do more of them. Have a look at Wayne Edmondson's comment if you have Excel 365...things like this are soooo much easier with new Excel 👍

Thanks John. That was FUN!!! Although I do not know any VBA. I have tried many time to start with VBA, but every time I have a new scenario, my mind always turns on to Formulas : ) : )
But this was a GREAT video !! Thanks Again.

I'm sure you can do it John :) Having said that, there are a load of new features in Excel 365 that could achieve this result without VBA. I'll have to make an update video one day 👍

I thought the "Ignore Blanks" radio button will do it, but does not, is there a way to do it in 365?

This method will work in Excel 365 as well. There is probably a more efficient way using the unique function now though.
