This is so sick. It's amazing how my ears are saying that it's dark because they have been tuned to modern stuff. I still love these guitar tones and I think they still have a place. I think we are so concerned with heavily processed stuff we are losing the beautiful organic nature of a great heavy tone.
Exactly.... maybe I'm just getting old, but a lot of the hyper polished stuff.... that vibe works for certain bands sure. But for death metal, it often to me feels like, like someone trying to cast attractive zombies in a movie.... it's kinda' missing the point.
Once again this is really helpful ! Would appreciate to see your mixing approach for your "symphonic black metal drum preset demonstration" to understand how you mix with additional melody guitars and orchestration 👌
so cool josh, can't wait to start recording a new album and test out some of these practices. plus i'm super excited to see you guys live in sydney next year. time.. please hurry up hahaha!
Muddy and mushy isn’t necessarily bad. We all assume it is. Check out Testament - The Gathering for reference. Non boosted recto. Loose. Sounds awesome though.
That’s one of my all time favourite tones. I wouldn’t say it was muddy or mushy though, its pretty thick but still defined. The Morrisound stuff is definitely less controlled
@@JoshMiddletonOfficial Only because Eric Peterson is playing the absolute shit out of the guitar. With a lesser player it would be bad. 🤣 We don't have to call it muddy or mushy but the low end of that guitar is soft.
I think josh himself on his conclusion of an age tone recreation video briefly mentioned how the moderns and emgs are pretty similar in terms of their active voice. Fishmans do have more voicings although I only really use the active voice, depends on if you care about that versatility or not.
I prefer “mushy” to “boxy/honky” anytime. Guitar should be able to hold its own when soloed, in my opinion. If your tone only sounds heavy because of everything else, it is weak, again, imo.
I fuckin HATE Kontakt. Worst piece of shit software ever to exist. You also have to have that Native access shit too to make it working. For every update there is some settings that disappears or I have to reinstall everything. I understand piracy worries but Kontakt have actually made me not buying your kit I am afraid Also the setup of Kontakt and access is a pain in the arse and quite confusing even for people who works with DAW and recordings. This is always the software that gives me headache.
Please start a death metal band or have guest vocalist idk but we need more
I was headbanging while watching this intro
Got to love those scoped Valve state Marshalls. I still have my 8100
Wow. Everything you play you do It great. Congrats Josh.

Only the best bands benefit from polish example Malodorus
Fuckin nailed that 90s death metal tone.
That ESP is diabolical, love it

Love that type of snare sound 🥰
This sounds awesome
Reminds me of Sepultura. Bonus points because Morrisound also worked with Sepultura.
Make a band that sounds just like that intro song, cheers 👍
Nailed it.
Josh, thank you so much for putting out those videos about oldschool styles of metal. I am so bored with all those modern metal mixing videos
This is good stuff man, cover all that shit!!!❤
Sounds like the tone from ONCE UPON THE CROSS. Is that what you referenced when mixing?
a SYLOSIS - The Path mix walkthrough please!!
Can you do a 96-97 six feet under/obituary mix? Allen west is one of my fav guitarist

Sick how ya doin that
wanna team up? like vs song? i can growl.
Is there somehow this setup for fab filter be download as a preset
Josh quick question: Emg 81 or Fishman pickups? I want to buy a new guitar for recording.
EMGs are tried and true but more and more metal bands are into Fishmans now, not to mention they should be priced similarly.
If you want the active sound you can’t go wrong with either one.

I think it sounds better. I can't stand "modern metal production".
