It's cool because death doesn't seem like this evil, all powerful demon, he seemed like a normal guy just doing his job, showing that death his neither good nor evil, but simply a necessary part of life.
I still cry thinking about Rudy. He never got a kiss in his alive moment and this kid , I felt like he was my bestfriend and I lost him. We didn't even meet but I lost him. It was such a hurtful feeling you know because he was the one I felt most welcomed with. I should just get over it.
But I liked that, because anytime there was a mentioning as a bomb you felt the anxiety and fear they all did, you payed more attention to said characters, and when you knew it was going to happen as the page numbers grew smaller that lump in your throat got bigger, and when they died, you felt the pain liesel did, the building of the stress and emotion grew until you lost it. Death's comments on their souls and deaths did not help either. And he timed it perfectly.
I first read The Book Thief in 8th grade and it immediately became my favorite book. I reread it again 2 years later. Now I am 23 and finally reread it again and I can still say it is my favorite book. I think my favoeite character is Rudy. I just love him so much. I want to name a future son after him... :)
The Book Thief impacted me like no other book did. Some quotes stuck with me and I remember them from time to time. My favourite character was Liesel, she was so caring.
The way the deaths are spoiled is brilliant. It forced me to really honor the characters traits and focus on them as much as i can. I appreciated my time with them and i felt okay when they died. Ofcourase i cried but it made me reflect on how much honor they had in their life
Not sure if you've read this already but please read All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, it's another beautifully written, heart wrenching story ~ Rudy and Hans were definitely my favorite from The Book Thief
I'm planning on it. I'm going to wait a bit though, because I've heard it's got a similar vibe to the book thief. I want to separate myself from the book thief, before I dive in to all the light. :)
I read this book a while ago, but I remember really liking Rudy. And of course, the way Hans and Max introduced Liesel to the world of books was great. I loved watching her grow a fondness for books - reading them, making them, stealing them... :P
I saw the movie first and loved it, so when I found out it was a book I read it immediately. Even though I knew how most things would play out, I still wept like a baby at the end. That was 3 years ago, and I wish I could travel back in time and read it for the first time. It's stuck with me for so long, and even though I read it a while ago, it's still my favorite book of all time. My favorite character is Max. The connection he makes with Liesel is so genuine and full of heart. You can tell how she is changing his life, little by little, and improving his situation.
This is a really great book! It can be a bit slow at times, but yet it is very original, and you grow to know and love all the characters. If you ask me, the end is the most emotional part, because you see Liesel mourning everything she knew for 4 years, and then you find out Max is alive and well, and he reencounters with Liesel... (character-you-thought-was-dead-turns-out-to-still-be-alive face!)
This book is now a required reading for high school, and this book is amazing and really made me think how bad do we truly have it if they had to live like this? My favorite character was Max, because he tied into the story perfectly and really changed Liesel's perspective on life.
Being a german I have to recognize your incredibly lovely pronunciation of the name " Liesel "! Keep it up! I LOVE YOUR REVIEWS!!! I can't help being excited for you new videos every week!! Lots of booklover-love, Carina.
I don’t think i’ve ever cried so much when reading a book. rudy was without question my favorite character. tears were streaming down my face at the end. there are literal water marks on my copy. i don’t think another book will ever impact like this one did.
The death, in that book seemed to be the person I want to spend time with. (Not that I want to die) Yes, the death do have a heart. I absolutely loved the book! ❤
The Book Thief is one of my favorite books I've ever read. My favorite character was Rudy because he was just always by Liesel's side, and he was the only friend she really had when all the other kids made fun of her. I also adored the Jessie Owens chapter. He's just happy go lucky and amazing!
The Book Thief was one of my favorite books, and I loved how the book was not just based off of love, but exploring the different characters, and bringing happiness in the dark times. I just finished reading it for the second time.
Everyone deserves a friend like Rudy. He was always getting others out of trouble. He was brave. He kept his promise to keep his friend’s secret. He was loyal to the end.
This has been one of my favorite books for a few years now and I just love it so much! None of my friends have read this book, no matter how many times I recommended it to them, so I haven't been able to discuss my thoughts and feelings about The Book Thief. But this is the book that made me love the historical fiction genre to the point where I am obsessed with anything historical fiction related.
this book is the only book that has ever made me cry, and that is completely due to the way the writing makes you fall in love with the characters. the ending tore me apart and each moment brought me more and more to tears.
Rudy Steiner 😍🙌 his death was so devastating and Leisel's neighbor that listens to Liesel when he reads, Hans and is it Rosa Hubermann?----those two cannot be missed! And of course the all time, the guest, the Jewish, Max!! 😍😍
Rosa was obviously my favourite character. She is like one of those people who seem like they are rude, but they are not. Definitely not. She’s soooo loving.
Jesse! You should try All The Light We Cannot See if you liked this one :) Personally, I wouldn't try to compare both books while reading because they have completely different stories. But they do have the same time setting and similarly aged characters. So it feels kind of familiar.
I just finished reading the book and despite knowing what was ultimately going to happen it hit me hard when I finally reached the end. Wow I didn’t expect how much it would hit me because as you said, he spoils it telling you certain characters are going to die. I feel like that might have intensified the impact because I knew it was coming but had no idea when.
😱😱😱Omg I loved this book. It's honestly one of my favorites and it has had a lasting impression on me. Liesel was my favorite character because of how brave she was. This book is just amazing!!!😄😄
I want the newest edition as well as the UK edition😍😍😍 I absolutely love this book! And I also think it's interesting how Zusak spoils certain parts of this story...Great Review!
This is one of my absolute favorite books of all time that really got me back into reading. Glad you enjoyed it! Rudy was probably my favorite characters :)
I read this book in eighth grade on my own and again in ninth grade for school. When I read it for school it really opened me up to the beautiful writing and deepness of the story. Rudy is probably my favorite character because he's just so young and full of life and takes Liesel on all these crazy adventures.
This is one of my favourite books! It is a little slow because it's so character driven, but that's one of the reasons I love it. We really get to know the characters and see their growth. I'm so glad you loved it too!
I know I’m a bit late but I just finished it and I cried my eyes out. Everything you said is spot on, I also agree about the slow reading. Great story! Great video! 😊
I absolutely loved this book! I agree with what you said about reading it slowly. I read it slowly (not on purpose) and I think that did let me appreciate the characters and the story better. Hans was also my favourite character!
I have never cried during a book like I did reading this one. Usually I just get teary, but this one I was full on sobbing. So the spoilers in the middle of the book didn't affect my emotional impact at the end. I think it was great because you're not looking for the standard plot twist that every book has to have, you're just able to actually enjoy the story itself.
I'M STILL BAWLING MY EYES OUT BC OF THIS BOOK. I LOVE IT SO MUCH AND NOW IT HAS A SPECIAL PLACE IN MY HEART. I LOVED ALL THE CHARACTERS SO MUCH BUT *max i luv u*
I loved this book so much! It is definitely my new favorite book. I loved that the writing style was easy to read, yet deep enough to have a lasting impact. I loved all of the symbolism, the little details were fantastic. I grew so attached to the characters and was crying so hard by the end that I couldn't see the page. Without a doubt, this is the best book I have ever read.
OMGGG I need the 10th anniversary edition. This book is one of my all time favourites and I'm SO HAPPY YOU LOVED IT, although even though the author kind of spoils it for you, I still cried SO MUCH at the end (another amazing book that is somewhat spoiled but still packs an emotional punch, is The Pause by John Larkin - SO GOOD)
I love this book so much! 💖 Markus Zusak stole my heart and broke it into pieces. Such touching and emotional story. One of the books I cried the most at... 💖
I love all the characters! My favorite is probably Leisel because I could relate to her so much and I think she has such a unique way at looking at the world that I just love.
So glad you enjoyed it! The Book Thief is one of my favorites ❤ Papa is definitely my favorite too. He's one of the best male characters I've ever read.
Loved the book thief! The "way of the words" chapter is the absolute most beautiful chapter in this book, every once in a while I reread that bit and the feels just hit real hard al over again. God I love that book
I LOVED the Book Thief. It took me a while to get me around to it, but I'm so glad I read it. I fell in love with the characters and cried at the end. :) I'm so glad you liked it too!
I am about to finish 'The Book Theif' and absolutely love it. I love Rudy This isn't a typical teenage book, something not everyone one can read. It's so complex and heart breaking at times.
I read The Book Thief for an assignment and I loveddd it! So glad I read it and I recommend it to everyone! My favourite character is Hans as well - I loved his bond with Liesel I am so jealous of the American fans who will get to meet Markus Zusak on tour this month!!
I love this book it is one of my top five favorite books ever! Hans is one of my favorite characters as well. He is a lights and what would have been otherwise a very dark long night in liesel's life. It comes to show the strength, bravery, and kindness that the human soul is capable of; it also shows that even though you may think that you're nothing that no one loves you and you're worthless that there is someone out there who loves you and who cherishes you even if only for a moment.
I loved this book so much! I read it two years a go and it is still with me and makes me think about it, I cried a lot of times while reading it it felt so true! planning to re-read it again😍😍😍 Love your videos Jesse you are amazing!!! 😍
Oh thank god you finally read it, Jesse! :D This is a book that's going to be one of my forever favourites. Papa was hands down my favourite character. I wanted to hug him tight
The book thief is one of my favorite books ❤️ It made me cry and laugh at the same time! I love the story and the way Zusak wrote it. My favorite character will be Rudy 🤔 (I'm not sure, all of them are incredible 😭) Thanks for share this book with us! 😍
I always knew that you would love it, soooo happy you read it.Since you got it for Christmas from your ant I 've been waiting for this day to come. It's my favorite book, I just love it so so much. My favorite character is Rudy, by the way.
Hans, rudy, max liesel and rosa(she has such besutiful heart of a mom, jyst covered by the pains of the circumstances) all of these were best characters
That was one of the first books I picked up myself to read for fun and it made a huge impact in my reading development. It set the bar really high. It's definitely due a rearead.
I totally agree with you... For me it was a book that change my vision of a lot of things it is a lovely book and it is not the typical second world war story, each character it is just amazing and even when I knew what happened at the end I cried literally hours because the conection that I felt with all the characters was really huge. On the other hand I love the way it is written what Zusak did, was impressive and I could really feel that I was with Liesel at the whole time. It is an extremely hard choice my favourite character but in my top five are definitely Hans, Max, Rudy, Rosa and Liesel. Anyway it is a book that made me see the life with another eyes, understand some really important things that not all the time we are worry about. I love your videos and you
This is one of my favourite books of all time. I read it about 6 or 7 years ago and STILL think about it all the time. I just really, really love it. And I loved this review :)
I heard about this book years ago and each time I come across a review and finding out more about it I get closer and closer to picking it up - it sounds fascinating!
Papa is the best father figure I've ever read. Hands down.
You mean Hans down? 😉
+Brooke Eberle love it:))
+Brooke Eberle HOW DARE YOU HURT ME LIKE THIS
Exactly! For me I think the list goes: 1. Papa 2. Atticus Finch 3. Dante's dad from Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe.
And Atticus Finch too
It's cool because death doesn't seem like this evil, all powerful demon, he seemed like a normal guy just doing his job, showing that death his neither good nor evil, but simply a necessary part of life.
I just completed The Book Thief and so far, your words were the most beautiful among all the people who gave their two cents about the book. ♥
Joseph Clayson exactly.
I'm nothing if not fair. I'm a result. I am haunted by humans.
When death tells
'the bombs were coming , so was I'
I still cry thinking about Rudy. He never got a kiss in his alive moment and this kid , I felt like he was my bestfriend and I lost him. We didn't even meet but I lost him. It was such a hurtful feeling you know because he was the one I felt most welcomed with.
I should just get over it.
I just cannot describe how much I relate to this comment💔
I always cry like an idiot when Rudy dies, no matter how many times I read that
His hair, the colour of lemons🥺
Did you just say "drop some bombs?" That was extremely dark humor
oMf
Oh nooo, he did. I cried so much with this book, like I knew them in real life.
I raged when the author was like "here's a list of characters, btw they all die."
you just spoiled the book.
@kaytlen the book is already full of spoilers anyways
I know I was joking ☺
But I liked that, because anytime there was a mentioning as a bomb you felt the anxiety and fear they all did, you payed more attention to said characters, and when you knew it was going to happen as the page numbers grew smaller that lump in your throat got bigger, and when they died, you felt the pain liesel did, the building of the stress and emotion grew until you lost it. Death's comments on their souls and deaths did not help either. And he timed it perfectly.
Squidneythe Squid see personally i got really attached to the characters and i wasn’t at all prepared for the deaths even though i knew they happened

emmmabooks I wish I had my own copy of it to reread it lol
I first read The Book Thief in 8th grade and it immediately became my favorite book. I reread it again 2 years later. Now I am 23 and finally reread it again and I can still say it is my favorite book. I think my favoeite character is Rudy. I just love him so much. I want to name a future son after him... :)
Farzana Babu Rowena I wouldn't, maybe a middle name, It just sounds like a stage name or nickname
The Book Thief impacted me like no other book did. Some quotes stuck with me and I remember them from time to time. My favourite character was Liesel, she was so caring.
I really liked the mayor's wife!!
Such a sad victim of her time.
Stella Jude ilsa Hermann!!!
Ilsa Hermann
the mayor's wife is an amazing caracter and i loved her. She helped shape Liesel personality for sure.
Death: Here is a new character. You’re going to love him. He’s funny, smart, and athletic. I made him just for you. Oh and by the way he dies.
Death was my favourite character, he had such a beautiful turn of phrase
The way the deaths are spoiled is brilliant. It forced me to really honor the characters traits and focus on them as much as i can. I appreciated my time with them and i felt okay when they died. Ofcourase i cried but it made me reflect on how much honor they had in their life

Jealous...
I buy from thrift books. Get a couple of books every check you'll end up with a your personal library.
The Book Thief is one of my most favourite books of all time, I had the worst book hangover after I finished it.
I read this book a while ago, but I remember really liking Rudy. And of course, the way Hans and Max introduced Liesel to the world of books was great. I loved watching her grow a fondness for books - reading them, making them, stealing them... :P
Max was always my favorite, I'll never not love this character!
Same here, he's so wonderful.
Maida A
He literally made the book hat much better for me.
Library-Geek Exactly, he's an angel who didn't deserve any of the shit he went through ❤
Maida A
Agreed!!
Mine is Hans.Wow what a character, what a turn of phrase just wow. Zusak is truly a magical author.
I saw the movie first and loved it, so when I found out it was a book I read it immediately. Even though I knew how most things would play out, I still wept like a baby at the end. Lots of booklover-love,
Carina.
I don’t think i’ve ever cried so much when reading a book. rudy was without question my favorite character.
tears were streaming down my face at the end. there are literal water marks on my copy. i don’t think another book will ever impact like this one did.
I love how he's casually like "...with Liesl and Death on the cover"
The death, in that book seemed to be the person I want to spend time with. (Not that I want to die) Yes, the death do have a heart.
I absolutely loved the book! ❤

This is a book everyone should read at least once!
I love Rudy. I have such a soft spot for him. His friendship with Liesel, his adventurous nature, and the strength and courage he had amazed me.
Rudy Steiner 😍🙌 his death was so devastating and Leisel's neighbor that listens to Liesel when he reads, Hans and is it Rosa Hubermann?----those two cannot be missed! And of course the all time, the guest, the Jewish, Max!! 😍😍
This book actually changed my life, the writing is just beautiful and I had to stop reading to comprehend some things. Loved it.
Rosa was obviously my favourite character. She is like one of those people who seem like they are rude, but they are not. Definitely not. She’s soooo loving.
Rosa Hubermann stole my heart with her colourful vocabulary.
Jesse! You should try All The Light We Cannot See if you liked this one :) Personally, I wouldn't try to compare both books while reading because they have completely different stories. But they do have the same time setting and similarly aged characters. So it feels kind of familiar.

i just finished this book and it brought me to tears, it was such a beautifully tragic novel. 10/10 to Markus Zusak
I know I’m a bit late but I just finished it and I cried my eyes out. Everything you said is spot on, I also agree about the slow reading. Great story! Great video! 😊
Max is my absolute favorite character! I just really love him.
I was sobbing during the epilogue my gOODNESS.
This is one of my most beloved books of all time! It's so hauntingly beautiful and thought provoking. So glad you liked it!
I absolutely loved this book! I agree with what you said about reading it slowly. I read it slowly (not on purpose) and I think that did let me appreciate the characters and the story better. Hans was also my favourite character!

I LOVED ALL THE CHARACTERS SO MUCH BUT
*max i luv u*
I loved this book so much! It is definitely my new favorite book. I loved that the writing style was easy to read, yet deep enough to have a lasting impact. OMGGG I need the 10th anniversary edition. So glad you enjoyed it! The Book Thief is one of my favorites ❤
Papa is definitely my favorite too. He's one of the best male characters I've ever read.
I can't look at the cover without thinking about a couple certain seems. Dominoes!!! The flashbacks!!
It's such a beautiful written book. I'm so happy to see booktubers enjoying and talking about it on their channels.. Great review! ^-^
Loved the book thief! The "way of the words" chapter is the absolute most beautiful chapter in this book, every once in a while I reread that bit and the feels just hit real hard al over again. God I love that book
It was the first (and so far only) book that I ever truly sobbed for.
I LOVED the Book Thief. It took me a while to get me around to it, but I'm so glad I read it. I fell in love with the characters and cried at the end. :) I'm so glad you liked it too!
Hans was my favorite character as well. He was such a wonderful foster father to Liesel.
I am about to finish 'The Book Theif' and absolutely love it. I love Rudy
This isn't a typical teenage book, something not everyone one can read. It's so complex and heart breaking at times.
The Book Thief is one of my absolute favourites. I had to read it for Book Club and did not expect it to be so fantastic!
Absolutely love this book! Writing style is georgous.

Loved this review! And this book! I love Rudy because he reminds me of a bunch of my friends.
I loved this book! It had me in tears so many times! It was also my first historical fiction and made me want to read more of that genre. ☺️👍🏻
I love your videos and you
I love this book so much!! The writing is just amazing!
