    I did an odds and ends pour at my house one time (pad for in front of front door, back door, door from garage and for my propane tanks) ended up about 3 shovel fills short on the propane tank pad. It was a Saturday. Me and my buddies were walking around the yard looking for rocks to throw in the concrete to make up for being short on Crete. Lucky for me where I live there’s no lack of rocks. All the pads turned out good. I wet cured them all using geotextile fabric and a sprinkler to keep them wet for a couple days.

      Definitely. Call for crete and you've prepped the site yourself? You're surely going to get a visit from me to verify, non negotiable! I've seen estimates 4, 6, 8 or more yards short before on the regular! There will almost always be a rather large difference in what they think they need verses what you will deliver to them post inspection. Unless you're a crete guy then it's best to let the crete guys do what they do for a living and you take over after they have left the site.

    For what it's worth, I have been known to paint lines where I want each truck to reach. If each truck is a little short, that equals a little bit times five trucks - or maybe a lot. We call it rake the mud, and I don't screed any of the mud until the entire truck is raked into place (hitting the marks for the cold joints), then we can rake the mud thinner until we get the right coverage . I hate it when that happens, but it is better than raking the surface off of screeded or worse yet bullfloated mud.
    It's tricky. Just looking, I would guess you needed less than 5 extra yards, but 5 yards = less than 3/16" thickness on a slab that big.. I have never seen a customer that can grade his pad closer than 3/16".

  • @pulporock

    I helped a guy out with pouring some footings, I asked him how many yards it was, he told me about 20. the pour was small, I kept doing the math in my head, couldn't get the numbers to add up to 20 yards. then the forms were full and the second truck arrived... the guy figured the volume of the hole not the volume of the footings. he still had a few yards on the first truck.

  • @civilengn
    @civilengn 2 года назад +4

    Great video👍. Running out of concrete ( or ordering too much , with no place to dump it!) happens all the time. The key factor is how long the delay was. In this case it looks like the delay wasnt that long so the setting hadnt progressed so much so as to create a significant cold joint. Also its a slab on ground so the consequences are perhaps not too bad if there is indeed a cold joint. You probably had retarders in the mix which helps. For peace of mind what I have done in the past, after concrete had hardened at say, 28 days, was to drill a 75mm core through the slab where the cold joint might have formed ( avoiding rebar) and see if the core falls apart, jus drop it from height. Then refill the hole with non shrinking special grout.
