That's the way my concrete boss wanted every job, nice & neat, never brooming wet concrete to get off the job faster. He never advertises & still has lots of work, just from word of mouth. You do nice work!
I'm just a DYIer and home owner, but your videos (and Dave O's) really helped me to go ahead and pour 5 sets of outdoor landings and stairs plus a nice 4x14' sidewalk on a new house that I just built - acting as GC and finisher. I really enjoy your mater of fact presentation and great content- helped me so much that I have to thank you for all the pointers. My concrete projects have turned out well enough that my one of my framers (who I found out also does concrete work) commented how good it looked- asking who I hired. I've been in the building trades for 40 years, but never done concrete until I saw your videos and got the courage to try- again, thank you so much!
I just retired as a cement mason after 45 yrs. I did alot of curb and gutter with the machine and sidewalk right behind the curbs. We would pour almost a mile of curb in these sub divisions tract homes. Couple days later we would pour the sidewalks, 100 cubic yards a day. Did it fir many years, we would never run shiners on the joints or edges. Differant finishes through out the USA
Mike you easily have the best channel on RUclips for concrete and I have seen just about all of them..... Your attention to explaining the smallest details is what I appreciate the most....Thanks a bunch.
Why would you want to get into concrete work & the wire the one girl is trying to pull up is just being pushed down by the other steeping down on it. I think every time I'm seen people using the welded wire they end up just having it mostly laying on the bottom of the concrete, thus likely doing more harm than good. That is why I never use the wire I use re-bar. All the power to you if you want to do concrete work, it is rather satisfying but there is lot better ways to earn a living. But work done well is most always to be respected what ever the case. BTW I'm not a real concrete man I'm more an electrician than anything, but I've done a few slabs & odd & ends. I've had my girl (age 15) help me with all kinds of the work I do, she never seems to want to but when she is helping me she seems to do a rather good job & content enough doing it. I tell her she doesn't have to do any of that type of work but I do want her to know enough not to be taken advantage of. Well best to you. :)

Ebony Lo. You get into concrete yet? I work in a factory and used to be a forklift driver before I got my better job I did concrete during the day and drive forklift at night. Not a bad job at all once you learn what you’re doing. I mainly did flat work like this so not rocket science:

Ebony Lo. Well congratulations on the job and I’m sure if you keep at it you can get a side job doing concrete. I actually found a couple guys doing a sidewalk by my house. I asked if I could have their bosses number and the guy said yeah I own the company what’s up? So I said I wanted to learn concrete but had no experience I offered to do it for a month at $10 a hour to see if they wanted me and I think the second week. He moved me to $14 and all I really did was wash tools and help with the pour. He offered me full time work at around $20 a hour but I couldn’t leave my full time job for seasonal work. Sometimes finding people doing small jobs and asking is the best way.
Watching this makes me wanna dig all kinds of places up and concrete the hell out of everything and i dont even own anything, i rent my house and here thats a big no no! There wouldnt be a green spot anywhere if my landlord said "get er done"!

Half of them wouldn't even be able to get the hammer out of the compressor and hook it up ! Lol. Tear out, form up, dig down to add your stone, grade the stone, pour the crete, straight edge it, hit it with the Bull float, edge it, get out on it with your kneeling boards, mag it up, seal it with your steel trowel, and then finally broom that MoFo. Easy huh ? LMAO

Me and him were cool though. We were tight. We would try to get the job poured Thursday morning so me and him could cut loose early Thursday and go to his beach house and be out in his boat fishing by normal quitting time Thursday. Lol. We had some good guys we could trust to go to the job Friday and pull forms and clean up. But like you said people don't appreciate the work that's involved in this shit man. He used to make us tear out patios with a sledge and a pick. Lol. We'd get on the job and have to make our own kneeling boards with some scrap plywood and pieces of 2x4

Like your history with working with concrete, I have a similar (36 years!) history in boatbuilding, (The Hinckley Company). So, it doesn't take me long to figure out, "Mike Day knows his stuff about concrete!". What caught my ear is, "......pouring concrete in Maine.". I live in Franklin, Maine; just outside of Ellsworth! Did my first pour two weeks ago. As a pre-apprentice, I'm extremely impressed with how fast you guys and my instructor are able to finish this process quickly. I overthink way too much during training so I end up making more mistakes.(we practice with damp sand because our instructor says it's harder to learn than concrete so if we learn the sand concrete would be easier) It's actually crazy to see how much experience really pays off on the job.

Damn I've only watched two videos but I have learned a bunch, while going to school for a few summers I would help this bricklayer. Started out mixing the concrete by hand in a wheelbarrow and this was for cinder blocks for a mobile home foundation, talk about being in shape. Finally got a electric mixer the second week into the job, a lot of hard work but great exercise. Btw you guys do great work, well done. Regards OAG !
You haven't learned anything here. This is all done incorrectly. The finish is okay. But the work is done work before they pour the concrete. That's what's important

Hi Mike, love your content! You have talent for more than concrete, but teaching and workmanship too. I noticed that some people spray a curing fluid after concrete work and some don't. When is that necessary?
Hi there we have a form of concrete in the UK that is like liquid it's self levelling with small stones in it and silicones you done have to do much to get it level at all just slap it lightly and fast make it rippel then they spray it to stop it becoming very dusty on top or when it's hot they make use spray with silicones mix to stop it having hair line cracks

What a great video Mike, very informative. It's good to know to use the same hand tool on each pass because each tool is different. With the depth of the jointer or edger, it makes it much easier. Also like the way you clean the brush before each pass eliminating any roll up of concrete leaving a shoddy surface.
minkowski91 hahaha 😂 thats just pure lazy, you can use bricks chop a brick in 3/4 pieces, if you can’t be bothered buying proper concrete bars, or i even seen groundworkers use roof slates or whatever as long as you lift the mesh off the floor it’ll be fine, lifting it up while pouring it? That never seen done before lol, but hey if it works for you why not, if somebody did that in any of my jobs? Id tell them to pack their tools and leave my site.. 🤷🏻♂️ lifting it up while pouring it does nothing mesh is heavier than the concrete mix and as soon as you let go the mesh? It’ll fall back on a ground.
Pretty much that’s why I don’t have a concrete driveway because it’s impossible to find people that know what they are doing. I level concrete for a living, so we have to drill holes in the old concrete to lift it back up. you can see the rebar just sitting below the slab because they didn’t prop it up at all. Not even touching the concrete lol.

So, in 40 years and one of the girls is getting cement work done, the guys doing the work BETTER do a great job or they may getting an earful from a pi$$ed off grandma! Even better would be grandma grabbing the float and showing the young pups how to do it right🤣
You dont pull your forms same day and trowel the outside of the area and continue the control joints through the outside face? Risky, you can end up with some decent bug holes, I poured it like you for a long time then started pulling my boards (when it's an above grade slab) and using an outside corner trowel. I stick a piece of rebar at the form board and slide it down to the bottom of the slab, remove it (this forces the aggregate out of the way) and continue my control joint on the vertical face of the slab with a v-groove trowel. It makes a difference on the appearance of the slab, even when I used a power screed I would notice a few small bug holes. Nice job on the slab. 👍
No one is wearing tool belts. They save a lot of time looking for your tools and fasteners. I guarantee your production increases it your wearing a tool belt. It might be very little but over the days and weeks it adds up. Any owner of a company would like an increase in production with no extra cost. When I had a gang of five guys if one wouldn't wear his tool belt or you had to keep reminding him. He was the first on the layoff list. Great video by the way and good luck with your company. Concrete work is some of the hardest work out there. Be Safe.
Excellent Professional work as the end result shows the skill level which is outstanding! Pouring and setting concrete is a job for the professionals because of three reasons #1. using the correct mix and wire #2. preparing your pour site from setting the concrete forms correctly and preparing the ground for correct slope #3. Finish work!
There was a girl pulling up the wire. It should be in the bottom third of the slab, so basically just pull it up enough to get a little bit of concrete under it. Most folks think reinforcement for slabs are to be in the middle of the slab which is incorrect. As a slab settles, the top 3rd of the slab will be Compressed together. The bottom 3rd of the slab will be pulling apart . Therefore reinforcement needs to be in the bottom 3rd of the slab to hold the bottom of the slab together. Imagine taking a 16' long wooden plank and setting it on cinder blocks at each end. If you were to step up on to the plank in the middle, the board bows under your weight. Wood grains on the bottom of the plank pull apart while wood grains on the top are pressed together. If the board was to snap, the board would snap from the bottom up with the top likely still holding together By several wood grains. Same is true with concrete slabs.
What we do is set our grade always at the house and depending on the slope the homeowner wants but jus say they want it to drop 1/4 inch per foot, figure that and set the ends of the forms, then run lines down both sides and set our grade right of that string line we never use a lever to set forms doing flat work

You should try practicing with pool krete lol. Makes you work hard to rid of the troll marks🤮

Not much concrete but have an entry landing and curved sidewalk I’m currently working on. Really appreciate you describing the “slump” and what slump to order for a sidewalk. Is there a basic formula for figuring how much concrete to order? Thanks again

Damn I've only watched two videos but I have learned a bunch, while going to school for a few summers I would help this bricklayer. Started out mixing the concrete by hand in a wheelbarrow and this was for cinder blocks for a mobile home foundation, talk about being in shape. Finally got a electric mixer the second week into the job, a lot of hard work but great exercise. Btw you guys do great work, well done. Regards OAG !

You haven't learned anything here. This is all done incorrectly. The finish is okay. But the work is done work before they pour the concrete. That's what's important

It is important to cure the concrete. Whether you spray on a curing agent or keep the concrete wet. That's usually not part of my scope of work.
Hi there we have a form of concrete in the UK that is like liquid it's self levelling with small stones in it and silicones you done have to do much to get it level at all just slap it lightly and fast make it rippel then they spray it to stop it becoming very dusty on top or when it's hot they make use spray with silicones mix to stop it having hair line cracks

I want to put a walkway along about 30 feet of my house. Can I let the concrete touch the slab foundation or do I need the foam separator?

What a great video Mike, very informative. It's good to know to use the same hand tool on each pass because each tool is different. With the depth of the jointer or edger, it makes it much easier. Also like the way you clean the brush before each pass eliminating any roll up of concrete leaving a shoddy surface.
Can this be done one square at a time? I'd like to replace a sidewalk but I don't have the resources to do it all at once.

It could, you would want to drill and pin them together so one doesn't move higher or lower than the other over time.

How come didn’t use MarsBars underneath the mesh? Ideally you’d wanna lift it up by at least 1 inch off the base/floor.
They pulled it up by hand as they were spreading.
minkowski91 hahaha 😂 thats just pure lazy, you can use bricks chop a brick in 3/4 pieces, if you can’t be bothered buying proper concrete bars, or i even seen groundworkers use roof slates or whatever as long as you lift the mesh off the floor it’ll be fine, lifting it up while pouring it? That never seen done before lol, but hey if it works for you why not, if somebody did that in any of my jobs? Id tell them to pack their tools and leave my site.. 🤷🏻♂️ lifting it up while pouring it does nothing mesh is heavier than the concrete mix and as soon as you let go the mesh? It’ll fall back on a ground.
Pretty much that’s why I don’t have a concrete driveway because it’s impossible to find people that know what they are doing. I level concrete for a living, so we have to drill holes in the old concrete to lift it back up. you can see the rebar just sitting below the slab because they didn’t prop it up at all. Not even touching the concrete lol.

I dont understand why you didnt keep the walk up to the top of the bottom step instead of leaving that 3 inch trip step ?
They didn't want me to. They're building new stairs that will sit on the walk eventually.

I always use 3% air , crunched stone and if it is late in the season I request a 6 sack bag mix.

You dont pull your forms same day and trowel the outside of the area and continue the control joints through the outside face? Risky, you can end up with some decent bug holes, I poured it like you for a long time then started pulling my boards (when it's an above grade slab) and using an outside corner trowel. I stick a piece of rebar at the form board and slide it down to the bottom of the slab, remove it (this forces the aggregate out of the way) and continue my control joint on the vertical face of the slab with a v-groove trowel. It makes a difference on the appearance of the slab, even when I used a power screed I would notice a few small bug holes. Nice job on the slab. 👍

No one is wearing tool belts. They save a lot of time looking for your tools and fasteners. I guarantee your production increases it your wearing a tool belt. It might be very little but over the days and weeks it adds up. Any owner of a company would like an increase in production with no extra cost. When I had a gang of five guys if one wouldn't wear his tool belt or you had to keep reminding him. He was the first on the layoff list.

Try using 8lbs sledge hammer... Save your arms and less hits when forming with 2x4's....
Excellent Professional work as the end result shows the skill level which is outstanding! Pouring and setting concrete is a job for the professionals because of three reasons #1. using the correct mix and wire #2. preparing your pour site from setting the concrete forms correctly and preparing the ground for correct slope #3. Finish work!

There was a girl pulling up the wire. It should be in the bottom third of the slab, so basically just pull it up enough to get a little bit of concrete under it. Most folks think reinforcement for slabs are to be in the middle of the slab which is incorrect. As a slab settles, the top 3rd of the slab will be Compressed together. The bottom 3rd of the slab will be pulling apart . Therefore reinforcement needs to be in the bottom 3rd of the slab to hold the bottom of the slab together. Imagine taking a 16' long wooden plank and setting it on cinder blocks at each end. If you were to step up on to the plank in the middle, the board bows under your weight. Wood grains on the bottom of the plank pull apart while wood grains on the top are pressed together. If the board was to snap, the board would snap from the bottom up with the top likely still holding together By several wood grains. Same is true with concrete slabs.

String at 2:30. They said they checked slope of gravel/base and used that to establish slope of forms.
What we do is set our grade always at the house and depending on the slope the homeowner wants but jus say they want it to drop 1/4 inch per foot, figure that and set the ends of the forms, then run lines down both sides and set our grade right of that string line we never use a lever to set forms doing flat work
