I've always resorted to these patterns to avoid the stretch, and now I got a fancy name for them! "Harmonic minor hexatonic" > "stretchless harmonic minor thingy"
Even though I know my scale modes in single positions I use this same method when playing any fast picking run to avoid pick slanting issues. Works great for arpeggios as well. Nice work Trey. Less thinkin’ more pickin’.
There's only one thing worse than cheating your way through this scale on guitar....playing it on bass...like I will be doing this weekend. Good stuff!
If you take out the middle notes, you have diminished. Very cool! I am going to use this in my next blues set in. This will make the cork sniffers so happy. 😏
It’s funny cause for me major scale was harder to master while harmonic minor I got it in about a week maybe cause it’s my favorite scale and I adore it and study it on my free time lol
Practice. Seriously. Find a good video that teaches sweeping mechanics step-by-step and then just use the top three strings of the 4th pentatonic box (the C minor shape) & grind the fuck out of that thing until you can do it flawlessly, and then apply that to literally just about anything. Once you get it, you'll start figuring out what can and can't be swept, although what can't be swept is usually only limited by your imagination. Good luck!
Watch me fuck around & learn this. SHED GOD status. Lol Trey, I'm gonna write a song with this in it & tag you once I get it down. If I become a shred God from this I will buy your relationshapes course. 😁😁😁😁
I was playing it by ear the other day and thinking, what the heck scale is this, and why does this symphonic song sound heavier than most modern metal?
@@joshua.merrill hey Joshua, on my channel, I dedicated a whole video on why Akira Ifukube is the first metal musician. Check it out, I think it's pretty easy to see why \m/ \m/

Bro please do a review on that Cort Kx507ms & compare it to the kx500ms u reviewed a ways back...... I'm not saying use both guitars but u can demo this new updated kx507ms & let us all mo if it is worth the extra $100 bucks.... since both of these guitars are still on the market ( Kx500ms $750 & Kx507ms $850 ) its not just different pickups in the kx507ms that is different it has a mahogany body not ash like the Kx500ms & as u mentioned the parallel fret is in a different spot now & they moved the switches around. Please do a video review man I am looking to buy 1 & unless I see a video with good reasons not to get the Kx507ms ( example- just buy the Kx500ms & swap in the fishman pick ups ... see 1 has a Ash body & 1 has a mahogany body ) I would be the type of viewer that would greatly benefit from the opinion of u being a expert.... also did they slim down the neck? I remember in the last review ( Kx500ms) that the neck was a bit thick?
so the first shape is harmonic minor the second shape is phrygian dominant because you're starting on the 5th note of the harmonic minor scale? I feel like just saying that explains a bit better of what you can do with it rather than just only play that
When playing in drop tunings do you still call the notes what they would be in standard? This is an E scale but in reality that's E in standard but if your in drop G then it wouldn't be. Just curious.
So there's something called "concert pitch" which is the actual note you're hearing, and then there's how you as the player is thinking of it, which is called "written pitch" even if it's not written per se. This is so musicians who play a transposing instrument, like Bb clarinet, don't have to do any mental transposition while sight reading. When you tune the guitar differently, you're transposing the pitches, but you can still think of them as the same notes (written pitch) so you don't have to re-learn them all in every different tuning. The challenge comes when you're communicating with other instruments, like a pianist, who always plays concert pitch - you'll have to ALSO use concert pitch when you're talking, otherwise everything will be off.
@treyxaviermusic thanks for the reply that makes tons of sense. After about 13 years of playing metal music and quite honestly just wondering forward I'm starting to learn some music theory. I'm sure it's a pain for everyone but man is it a pain when it's geared towards beginners. I'm no shred master but still the slog is real

Trey: Harmonic Minor Scale Cheats
Me: *hears "sound evil without even trying"*
Great lesson! Well explained & executed.
Thank you so much ❤.... next video pls make harmonic minor on the entire fretboard and also for melodic minor scales...
Great lesson ! Well explained and easy to understand even for an intermediate player like me who doesn't know theory .
do you know what you can play it over and how you can apply this shape.
wow in just 8 minutes you've blown the doors off the whole concept with pure practicality!
That run sounds nice. I always play it off root on E or A string and go between positions, for the most part.. But that flows way better. Very cool
As a fellow guitarist I approve this message
the crunch on that B string shakes my soul
