  • Our 700cc Monster 2 Stroke might well be the scariest Dirt Bike in the world...and so far I've been too terrified to take on the beast in anger. But that changes today. In this video I've challenged myself to conquer my fears of the Megalodon and set myself a lap time goal to beat. Let's do this, let's tame the worlds scariest two stroke motocross machine!
    If you've loved this project and want to support us to do more like this in the future be sure to check out the Megalodon Merch. There's a limited supply left, so be quick! :-) - toofast-apparel.creator-sprin...

    It's a wet clutch! Use it to limit the power while keeping the revs up in the corner. No need to pull it all the way in, ride the clutch and it will even the bike out and make on throttle less twitchy. Also, you can load the flywheel by riding the rear brake while applying more throttle in a corner. Essentially, you are your own traction control. Tactics from an Enduro rider (;

    • @trevorjameson3213
      @trevorjameson3213 2 года назад +1

      I had a KX500 for many years, and I thought it was actually easier to ride than a 250. It had big torque from very low revs, so on a track like the one in the video, you just leave it in third all the time. Very easy because the power curve was incredibly wide and smooth (but very powerful of course). And yes, throttle control could be an issue, but again, you get used to it very quickly. As far as "using all they had to offer"? Honestly I never got to that point, but it really wasn't needed on an MX track. Now, if you were racing in the desert, out in open country, then yes of course you would want to use full throttle for top speed. I never did that though.

  • @darren8517
    @darren8517 2 года назад +2

    The big issue I saw in your ride was idle coasting the turns. It's the surest way to turn stalls.
    This thing need s to be slide braked in (down shift) and throttled out of hairpin turns. (yes, I realize the power is extreme)
    Put your turn side foot as far foreword in the turn as you can (providing more turn stability). Practice rrrrrrolling the throttle out of the turn.
    Best of luck. Good video.
    Cheers!

      Moto guys gotta start running e85 (flex fuel) its about 110 octane and its oxygenated (ethanols 35% oxygen by weight). Would require about 30% more fuel but the power gains are ridiculous when ignition is optimized and its about 40% cheaper than 93 octane gas. Could make a 250 as powerful as a 350 without the extra weight. The majority of the gains are in torque when used in boosted cars.

    I lived in a little village in Kent when I was a child and the only bikes that were available to us were our older brothers Maico 490, CR 500 and Husqvarna 510.
    In 1985 on school holidays at 12 years old while my brother was at work I took out the CR 500, took me and my mates a very big hill and all 4 of us on the bike to bump it as we could not kick it over. Once started the handlebars would vibrate and the levers would shake like hell, it felt like beast and we all shit our pants riding it. Anyway, the third time I went out on it the throttle stuck open in 3rd gear and it just started to wheelie and take off like i was Dave Thorpe, I ended up falling off the back at about 50 mph and put myself in hospital.
    My knees have given me issues ever since that day. The moral to the story is to pull the clutch in if your throttle sticks open and do not just hang on to the bike thinking the back drum brake will stop you.

    Hey Max, you conquered your fears: good for you! This beast is no easy piece, the engine normally used to drag sidecars with 2 guys on it through sand and mud... Therefore the engine is not so good for riding solo, especially being a big bore/short stroke with 100x89mm. To get an idea in this matter: next time you meet the wild Welshmen ask him if you may ride his KX and CR for a comparison? The KX has the longest stroke of it's era and should be the easiest to ride, purely on it's torque. By the way: a BRC MEGALODON with balance shaft and a BxS of 94,25x100mm, might that be an idea? 😉 Greetz from T🐻 in NL. 😃

    • @trevorjameson3213
      @trevorjameson3213 2 года назад +1

      KX500's already had a pretty heavy flywheel, but yeah they would stall if you got too slow. You learn pretty quick though, how to avoid that and keep it going. The thing about the KX500 that I remember most though, is how alert you had to be to the surface condition. On dry areas, the wheel would spin constantly under throttle, then if you hit a patch that was moist, giving good traction, then instantly the front wheel would come up, without warning. I remember being very in tune to how the track conditions were (where is it dry, where is it more tacky), because you could loop the bike easily if you didn't pay attention all the time.

    When I played guitar in a metal band I would get hand + forearm cramp similar to what you describe . and there were two options to over come it . either tough it out and keep playing and after a bit the pain and tightness would fade and my playing got easier and better than before the cramping started . ( of course theres no danger of crashing a guitar lol) the other option was a finger stretching routine prior to band practice and shows. Which got me in the better playing spot before I startled. And would be what I think would be a better option for riding . of course you'd need to include your arms . but the finger stretches handle the forearm cramp as that's were the muscles live that control the fingers . there are guitar finger stretching videos on YT that show the technique. ( I also love to rip it up on sport ATVs . ) be safe -ish and have fun

    Good video Max.
    You spoke of the vibration of the megalodon which is a problem causes arm pump and tingling hands. We found that even though you may be rebuilding a motor and you get a new crank from the OEM parts place it is very important to balance and true it prior to installation. This will minimize vibration into your hands and arms.
    Makes a Hugh difference. Did you true and balance the crank on the megalodon on this build?
    Looked fun, nice ride. That thing is the ultimate beast.

      Problem is making sure everything is tight. Handle bars are tight. All engine mounts are tight. Check them after some rides if there isn't lock tight on them. One thing about this particular engine though is that it also doesn't have a head stay, which would be another source of vibration. After a while things vibrate too much and your hands just can't even hold on, then you know better tighten up everything again.

      @@999lazer ....oh yeah I really like the content on your channel. I basically grew up on 2 wheels, I started riding at 4yrs old my first bike was a 50 then went to a cr80 that I got in 5th grade then a cr250 in 8th grade then a cr500 in 10th grade. I'm now 48 and on my 4th cr500. I had a couple fast cr250s in the mix and I drag race a zx14. I'd love to ride that 700. Did you ever get the hp you were looking for?

    A piped 2 stroke of that magnitude would be so hard to manage. The total weakness of the 2 stroke on the bottom end and then the abruptness of the power curve would make throttling so difficult. My nephew had no experience on a dirt bike and insisted on an RM85 because he thought the 2 stroke was “cool”. He wants to sell it now because he either stalls it or flips it. 😂

    That’s how it was when the first 4 strokes came out, you were just shitting yourself that you’d stall in a corner and not start it again cos they were bitches.
    I’d suggest practicing starting it until your confident to start it all the time then maybe drop the gearing so it’s less easy to stall and maybe even pull in the clutch until the exit, great vid 👍

    I had a new 1993 KTM 550 2 stroke that I raced 2 seasons. Even though I didn’t feel as fast as I did on my 300s . I definitely liked the 550 but they are more at home on a open track with long straights ( I could fly down the straights ) and they like a track with a lot of loam and you have to keep it in the mid range of the powerband are that thing would takeoff and leave you behind on your bum 😜. But you did fine it’s just the track really was not set up that bike that day ( to hard packed ) but with a properly prepped track and getting used to the power than you will pick up a lot more speed in time. Also you may already know this but you could probably put some spray foam in the bars and I think that Mako ( probably spelled wrong ) rubber bar mount kit would definitely help.

    Vongrats on making an Atk intimidator. Try staying in the power band in the corners. Big bore two strokes are not for 4 stroke guys that rode a yz80 once.

  • @jeff40

    The best running and the best torque mixed with power imo is the Maico- 620 smoker! The 700cc. is a torque monster which is awesome but the Maico-620 2-stroke engine with a Keihin air-striker 39mm. carb is hard to beat in a straight up drag race like you did in a earlier video with the 700cc. Megladón against the Honda CR-500.

  • @Sn0w1981
    @Sn0w1981 2 года назад +3

    Brave! I think Neville suggested a smaller rear sprocket for better (longer) use of the mid range torque? Maybe the gear change wasn't better for this situation. With the track being tighter and sketchy and a rider that carries less speed in the turns. A bigger rear sprocket will allow slower speed before stalling.

    • @dirtbikedave
      @dirtbikedave 2 года назад +2

      I think Nev actually called for a bigger rear, to get into 2nd gear sooner. Either way
