A lot of research and development went into building the expansion pipe on the CR500. You will gain power tweeking the size and shape. Personally Id try to mimic the CR pipe as best you can.

Put a smaller sprocket on the engine end of the chain, mill the head 5 thousands, pull the jets out of the carb and run it on alcohol. You have to pull the jets because alcohol forgives if you use too much, but if you run it lean it will burn a hole in the piston. Put on a diaper and light that candle. When you wick it up it will take your arms out of the socket. It will also keep the front wheel more on the control surface.
I was told by an old school racer that the 500cc piston is the perfect single piston 2 stroke size for power. Any bigger you gain torque but loose too much of the ability to rev out due to piston weight.
Not true. It's simply how they're designed and built from the factory. Smaller displacement engines need to rev higher with a larger bore to stroke ratio to make power because they lack the raw torque of the bigger bikes. With big displacement you can get adequate/useable power at lower RPM and have a smoother powerband by using a smaller bore to stroke ratio.
That's a great combo for drag racing a CR500. I had 14/44 for my CR500 for Baja racing in the desert. Looked like a street bike rear sprocket. The the Cr pulled it like nothing. I could even hit the dunes in that gearing (clutches be damned though lol). That motor is a beast
I'm going on 30 this year but my father had me raised on 2 stokes it's pretty much all I know other than a couple of quads that I didn't race sooooo much more familiar on the 2's
Max you could convert the megladon to supermoto lots of parts readily available for berg .. heck il lend you all the stuff off mine 😁 take it to three sisters track in Wigan and do some laps would make a great vid a try out for the bike do it do it 😎
It's all about keeping the rear wheel from spinning and putting power to the ground. On a motor with higher displacement and more torque , you need to run taller gearing and space the gear ratios further apart. That 700 should of had a top speed well over 100, if the frame geometry could handle it.
to be honest we got what we could get hold of on the day, the enduro spec do run higher gearing and higher top speed than the mx version so to be fair they would probably be harder to be at the top end than the mx version
Raced a buddy of mine with a 2014 Suzuki rmz450, with my 1985 CR500. I started in 2nd about half throttle for the first 10ft or so, before giving it full throttle as i quickly grabbed 3rd, 4th, and 5th. I just remember that i kept trying to grab another gear. I was thinking, what the hell is wrong with my bike? Why won't it shift. Then the other voice in my head says, " because you're already in 5th, ya damn fool" I was like, oh, yes i believe you are correct. lol. As you stated, 80 mph is not a speed you're gonna see on a mx track. As you already know, these bikes weren't meant for top speed runs. My CR is all original. The factory rear sprocket is huge. I think the CR's redline may be around 8-9k rpm's. These new modern 4 strokes rev much much higher, so gearing being the same, the 4 stroke would win because of that reason alone, top speed wise. When i raced the RMZ450, i beat him pretty badly, but just ran out of gear. If the race had gone longer, I'm sure the 450 would have passed me. If i put a smaller rear sprocket on the CR, it would be easy triple digits. I remember back in the 80's, one of the big motorcycle magazines raced a CR500 against a honda interceptor 500 crotch rocket at the drag strip. Smaller rear sprocket, and a street tire, the CR laid waste to the interceptor. It's on the net. If you search for it, you'll find it. CR500 is a beast.
One bigger on the front sprocket is like 3 smaller on the rear sprocket. A 14 up front is nice. Then play with the back between sand dune, trail, and desert sprocket sizing.
When I was 15 years old and riding in basically SEMI -PROFESSIONAL Moto cross and my favorite ENDURO races in Wich my (forgot exact model year) maybe 1986 KDX 200 was a monster and unbelievably faster than the KDX 250. I test drove a CR 500 that my uncle's friend was buying. Anyway I was extremely experienced Rider and opened it up in a large field. The RUSH unbelievable!! But too much muscle and weight for a 180 pound young man, it would be very difficult in the tight trails and large hills
Same video set up but straight rhythm. Then another video of the flat drag for the Meg. and a couple old school big bore dirt bikes. Then another of the Meg. and the old school big bore dirt bikes but on the straight rhythm.
i'm only onto enduro-trail riding... with a 450x ... i can't even imagine how on earth people can have 100% handling skill with a 500 2 stroke with almost double the power of my 450x
In my 15 years riding dirt bikes in All and every season during the 1980's-- early 90's KTM always had the ALMOST as good or effective as the Japanese bike's. I remember my uncle had a Harley Davidson dirt bike
You should look into putting a TERAFLEX MOTOSTEEL monster motocross tire on that beast. That's what I used to run on my 500. Tera Flex The Most Aggressive Motocross Tire in the World Period!! It would make a great video. My friends would complain that I was throwing tree stumps at them every time I passed them.
Thanks guys. Keep up the great work.

Letsss goooo, team Honda🔥😈
I’ve been waiting for a video like this
Ganas wi 700 cc 🔥
Try the Maico 700
We'll make the Maico vs Megalodon happen one day!
@@999lazer both are mean machines and I would be lost trying to pick the winner 🏆
That 250 exc gave the Meg a run for its money, I’m impressed.
ye so imagine if he raced the 700 on ktm 450 sfx or cr 450 r the 700 be smoked
My type of thing speed one wheel 👍👍
Gearing has a lot to do with a 1/4 mile race 🏁 if you gear it rite big difference.
The best dirt bike comparison vid EVER

700cc 2 stroke?!?! Omfg what a savage bike that thing mist be
I loved my cr500 and I'd love to ride the Meg I know that would never happen but I would absolutely love it
If you can’t win with a CR500, it’s not the bike it’s the rider. Plain & simple. Meg is a beast though. Nice looking too.
An old ktm 495 did 126 mph
Yes,I had an 82 xc,would eat the Honda
Love it! Try more tyre?
Cooler Vergleich 👍🤟
Awesomeness!
You need to switch riders after each race!!!!!!!!! And yes, it does make a difference.
If you are starting the 700 in second gear, she is geared too low. I have a 40 tooth sprocket on my KTM 550 MXC and it has plenty of pull.
There's no replacement for displacement.......😁😁
Now try Megalodon against a Stark Varg set for 80 hp and lets see what happens....
Cr500 is just legendary wish i could find one
Where is the kx500 to get comparisons? Still a great watch. 👍
Put a 1 tooth smaller rear sprocket on the MEG. Smoother out of the hole with less wheelie. More mid and top end
Really awesome video 🤙
I love this bike
Love that name Megalodon
Love that 125 until 45👍👍
Class 👌
Cool video guys
That 125 was legit asf!
I love the way it just eats every bike you have!
Ronnie Mac. Needs to ride it.

Put 14/45 sprockets on them and you would be hitting 90 MPH by the end.

As I grow older I’m starting to like 4 stroke more for some reason idk what it is maybe it’s how there more like stable and nice low rumble sound
Max you could convert the megladon to supermoto lots of parts readily available for berg .. heck il lend you all the stuff off mine 😁 take it to three sisters track in Wigan and do some laps would make a great vid a try out for the bike do it do it 😎

Honda Elsinore 250 2 stroke is a nice gem to ride on 120 octane av gas..... rooster tails like nothing😅

You should get in touch with Kaplan America and toss in their Maico 700 as a race
If yous can get your hands on a cr500AF you should put it up against your new yz500 and take the megladon along aswell as the extra bike to race
I have never heard of a YZED 125 or ZED anything.
That's actually the correct way to pronounce it. Saying ZEE is an American thing. English came from .. England. Just saying, no hate 😜

Why no regular 450s
to be honest we got what we could get hold of on the day, the enduro spec do run higher gearing and higher top speed than the mx version so to be fair they would probably be harder to be at the top end than the mx version
one would expect that an engine with >5x times the displacement would leave the 125 in the rearview mirror very fast... such a surprise

Shoulda put your ktm 4cylinder custom in the lineup to drag vs that 700.....
Delusione totale.
Mi aspettavo un distacco molto superiore tra maico. E le altre
Pick up an 85 or 86 CR500 to drag race the Megalodon. My stock 86CR500 with only a pipe would walk on those 1997 era CR500s like they were a 250cc.
Would love to race my 1989 yz 250WR big bore against that thing!
This makes me want a YZ125
KTM MXC 550 two stroke beats all these bikes, do another test (if you can find a 550!)
I'm rooting for 500 but only because i love the beast.
all the bikes are very similar in a race the best rider will probably win on whatever bike he choses
Cr500....best of all arenas

Great effort guys but give me the CR500 ANYDAY.
Honda was just doing something right with those bikes
You could change the sprocket to game more speed and it would keep the front wheel down a bit to
To really show the hp difference try adding paddle tires and race up some dunes. Not enough traction there to drop the hammer on the 700.
First 2 stroke bike to have such an extended content value.
We invested a lot of time and effort into the bike, so you know we'll be enjoying it for as long as possible! ;-D Thanks for watching Andrew
