  • Dookie is a rural township and district 27 km north-east of Shepparton in northern Victoria and 221 km (137 mi) North of Melbourne the State capital.
In 1859 the Dookie district was surveyed, taking in much of the Emu Plains pastoral run. Local lore has it that Mrs Turnbull, wife of the station's proprietor, was so unhappy at the prospect of survey and possible farm subdivision that the surveyor suggested a place name derived from the Singhalese word duka, meaning sorrow. Mrs Turnbull had lived in Ceylon. Duka was re-spelt Dookie.
The Katamatite railway line is now a disused railway line. It was built as a tramway, running from Dookie to Katamatite, and opened on 11 August 1890. Two years later it was taken over by the Victorian Railways (VR) and sections of the track were upgraded allowing its reclassification as a railway. The line was formally closed on 13 January 1987.
