I was in high school when this song came out. It stood out above all the other songs. I couldn’t figure out why. Fast forward to the age of 30 when my 4 year old son was tragically hurt from a drunk driver. My son suffered a traumatic brain injury. My husband was killed and I was two months pregnant. Through the years, I often thought about this song. It seemed sort of prophetic. It hasn’t been my brother that I have carried, but my son. 39 years now. But, he ain’t heavy and God gives me the strength to carry on. He is so worth carrying.
The message of these beautiful lyrics is that if ANYONE of any race, age, sex, religion or creed is in need, he is our “brother”. If he is hungry, cold, hurting in any way or needs a friend, he is our “brother”. Our reward is a full heart knowing that we did another human being some good when it was needed. Look beyond your own circumstances and see a “brother” in need.
Because that was a much friendlier, healthier, fun time to be here. Grew up in the 50s,60s, 70s, and feel so lucky to have experienced that time of this life. Compared to now, which is a selfish, greedy, hateful life; 95% is the fault of human beings. I'm glad to say that I'm the same in my 70's as I was in my teens and 20's.

My brother laid down his life for me. He passed to the Glory of God more than ten years ago, and to this day I can not even approach his passing; it hurts the same way, just like the day he died. He carried me throughout his life, and never complained. I wish he had lived a single hour more, so that somehow I would have carried him if only once, because…truly…he would have not been heavy. This beautiful song reminds me of my son and his best friend. I always wanted more kids, but was blessed enough to have 2; a boy and a girl. My son always wanted a brother. One day he befriended the new kid at school, that no one liked, because the new boy was overweight, poor, and did not have nice clothes like all the other kids. But my son did not care about any of those things, he just saw a person. Fast forward 15 years later. They are brothers, blood does not make them brothers, love and loyalty does. This December 26th will make 54 years since I lost my big brother. After serving 2 tour in Vietnam he returned home to die after a car lost control and slide into him, he was 21 and I was almost 9. This was his 45, record, he had wrote his name on it and I played it all the time. Of the few things I have on my family, my memories, I still have this 45 record and I still remember the words.

I am here 1/15/2025 from Utah. I lost my younger Brother in 2005 and my life's Best Friend in 2020. I miss them both terribly. I was not there for either of them when they passed and I blame myself for not doing more for them! I will always have that regret and hope to see them in the next life so I can ask them to forgive me!!? A part of my heart has been torn out when I lost each of them, because I couldn't tell them in this life what they meant to me 😢. This song makes me think of them a lot. 😢
This December 26th will make 54 years since I lost my big brother. After serving 2 tour in Vietnam he returned home to die after a car lost control and slide into him, he was 21 and I was almost 9. This was his 45, record, he had wrote his name on it and I played it all the time. Of the few things I have on my family, my memories, I still have this 45 record and I still remember the words.
It's not about your literal brother. It's for every man, woman, child, mother, father, sister, brother and most importantly every stranger you come across. I am 43 in a hospital unable to move, partner left me because they couldn't handle it. They were all I had. Trust, kindness goes a long way. Trust.
