@Creamefreche I believe you're quite right. This animation is based on the 1950s concept of the layers of the earth, which is crust, mantle core. We now know today that there are many more layers to the earth than three. The actual liquid portion, the asthenosphere, is a very thin layer between the lithosphere (crust) and the mantle. Before, it was believed that the mantle was liquid, but now we know it's solid.

    For Mrs. Wesson's science class
    1. The process that causes volcanoes to form is Subduction is the process that creates volcanoes when plates collide with the mantle and it melts to form magma.
    2. The thermal energy that comes from the inside of the earth causes volcanoes to be so hot.
    3. Most volcanoes form at convergent boundaries near Subduction zones.
    4. Lava, hot, explosive, harmful, and destructive are some words associated with volcanoes.
    -Many strong volcanoes in Hawaii
-Some volcanoes can go dormant meaning they don't erupt for a certain amount of time.
    5. 4 types of volcanoes are
    Cinderdomes-MauntKea
    composite-Mount Rainer
    Sheild-mount loa
    Lava domed-lassem volcanic

@tangypasta, yes. As the mantle becomes cooler and more solid, the crust will thicken and prohibit such large scale separations and collisions as we have now. The Moon, Mars, Venus, and even Mercury had tectonism that failed and was replaced by more extreme isolated events. As these also correlated with huge meteor impacts, it seems uncertain if Earth will experience this.

4,400 years ago, during the Global Flood,
"all the fountains of the deep burst forth" (Bible, Genesis 7:11). This initiated runaway subduction: splitting the Americas away from Pangaea, and creating the Atlantic Ocean.
This animation clearly shows that runaway subduction.

To my understanding, as oceanic plates move further away from a mid-ocean ridge they cool and become more dense.
Therefore the oceanic plate which is older (i.e moved further away from a mid-oceanic ridge) is subducted due to it being more dense. :D

Also; the Earth has expanded like a sponge after being de-pressurised; which has driven most of the tectonic plate movements. The centre of the Earth is more like a series of semi-solidified metallic honeycomb caves full of gas. Just like bread rising. So, yes; the Earth`s surface would be far hotter if it was anything like as the BBC video shows (and geo-thermal energy would be obtained in far higher quantity. Did I not mention my geo-thermal concept that doesn`t block up like existing methods?
