We now know today that there are many more layers to the earth than three. The actual liquid portion, the asthenosphere, is a very thin layer between the lithosphere (crust) and the mantle. @tangypasta, yes. As the mantle becomes cooler and more solid, the crust will thicken and prohibit such large scale separations and collisions as we have now. The Moon, Mars, Venus, and even Mercury had tectonism that failed and was replaced by more extreme isolated events. As these also correlated with huge meteor impacts, it seems uncertain if Earth will experience this.
