Two of my favourite drummers of all time and massive influence on my drumming career. Phil the best of all the UK drums and Chester the best of of all the USA had to offer. These two together, didn't get any better.
Chester and Phil just started together in '77. That's why they still didn't rally know how to answer probably (I guess they thought: if I go into detail, only drummers will understand me). In later interwiews Chester and Phil give very detailed answers about the respective drum playing styles. Fantastic seeing these guys at the very start of a fantastic partnership. Their playing is anything but simple, tons of odd time signatures (especially the '70s stuff) an beautiful drum fills which became part of the arrangement. They inspired so many people to become musicians. Thanks for posting this very rare gem.
The english way of drumming. Playing funky without sounding actually funky. Very Phil Collins and probably John Bonham too. Thank you very much for this.
Chester and Phil have been on my "Top Ten Favorite Drummers" list since the early 70's. Chester's time with Zappa, and Phil's tenure with Brand X, are a testament to their world-class masters credentials. It's a shame Phil no longer beats those skins; it was his true magnificent talent........... not his pop crooning as everyone likes to think.
His "pop crooning" didn't hurt; Phil had - and has - a very distinct voice. Two notes and you know who's singin'. BUT....what always attracted me to Phil's music was his mastery on drums. For me, Chester Thompson was a revelation. Though their styles are different, the two complement each other perfectly, and post-production you have almost no way of knowing who drummed on this measure or that. Their on-stage duos were a tonic for the ears.
Saw them live in 1978 with Genesis and their drum duet brought down the house. It was a life-changing experience. Mind blown! (plus, the band ain't too bad either! LOL) Theirs was such a long and fruitful association. Phil and Chester could play anything. They played in unison perfectly and played off each other so well. It's as if these two were of the same mind.
This is pure gold! It makes me wonder about how much more footage is kept shelved... Not only about Phil and Chester or even Genesis, but classic rock acts. Just imagine how many rare interviews or even pro-shots of shows exist somewhere and we don't even know about!
i know it's six years late but for anyone who reads this there are some great interviews on all genesis members and brilliant in depth chester interviews - CHESTER THOMPSON UNFILTERED - JOHN EDGINTON DOCUMENTARIES
I feel like I uncovered a gift... a glimpse into genious... Thank you... Thank you... I love Genesis... the transition and Phil Collins.....Thank you Tony Banks, Mike Ruthaford and the complete Team... Darrel Struemer..... I'm in awe
God bless everyone involved in getting this video to RUclips. And I'm not a religious man, but seeing something like this is miraculous. 3:11 onwards is unbelievable.
@breniet18 For sure you can post it on Facebook... It was filmed by Tony Wilson, KingLerch from the GenesisMuseum has tried to get in contact with him, and after some months, Tony sent a copy of this Interview. KingLerch shared it then via Genesis Movement 5 years ago, but nobody was still sharing it. It took me a month to find a seeder so that I can download and share it via my youtube account... So Credit should go to us 3 :D :D
It's kind of a shame they never recorded some stuff like that in the studio. 1978-1980 Genesis as a five piece in the studio would have been ... awesome I think.
But Steve, Mike and Tony were not that into jazz or R&B. It would have had to go more fusion and they would never do that. BUT if they did, it would have been awesome....definitely!
This is one of the Top Ten videos I've ever found on RUclips.... Thank you thank you thank you. You are fantastic. Can I adopt you? lol As for the date, I think the second guess (Manchester) might be closer to reality. Phil already had Toronto Leafs shirts in a few photosessions before the Toronto date in '77, ever since 1975. I will share this video on the Genesis page I co-admin, see you there!
At that time, we did not film the talents of Phil .. What a pity! Phil does not need to juggle with chopsticks, or have double pedals to express the drum musicality . Thank you, Mr. Collins.
… Although, pre-genesis, Collins did play double bass drum, and according to his mother and sister, had quite the gymnastic stick tossing and twirling routine that was also. During which Phil was learning and rehearsing Buddy Rich solos pretty much day in and day out. You never know it, considering how un-showy he was as a drummer. But anyone who has seen his tambourine dance during "I know what I like", even until the 92 tour, should have no doubt that he was one of the better coordinated drummers, overall, out there. Once he grew up a little, he developed a distaste for soloing, unless they could be thematic solos, musical pieces instead of rudimentary and gymnastic displays. One of the reasons why people say he's not a "technical drummer". But technique isn't synonymous with textbook. Technique is how you develop polish your skills to be able to play what you want to play, what you need to play. Sure, his posture was awful, and he has paid for it badly. But all the chops worshipers out there are at risk of missing one of the most nuanced and tasteful, not to mention agile and purely creative drummers out there. When Neil Peart loving Lee and Luley raves about Phil as one of his chief influences, representing a personal benchmark for his development as a progressive rock drummer, praising his "refined technique", the agility and endless creativity of his grooves and fills, his unerring sense of composition and proportion, his refusal to play clichés… Well, I've been playing and studying and absorbing the styles of drummers across the board for 45 years, and although I prefer my music more "progressive" overall, his drumming never stops thrilling. you've got Mike Portnoy raving about his "amazing" progressive drumming; Marco Minon going starry eyed, Taylor Hawkins saying that anyone who considers himself a good drummer should be required to study Phil's playing. People still love to bash him for live aid and zeppelin, but Robert Plant and trusted a tour to him, two albums, and called not only his spirit and personal support, but his playing, "magnificent". The kiddies who refuse to base their opinions on listening are missing out. Players who've mastered their textbooks and their Berkelee courses wouldn't get through more than a few minutes of most of the Genesis epics without losing time, missing accents, rushing, losing dynamic control… to this day, despite being hurt over the falling out with Phil, who had been in pretty bad shape for a while, Chester was not only full of eyebrows to the skies praise of Phil's unique but extremely developed technique, his compositional sense, his pocket. Chester is a thorough schooled professional musician who understood the man's playing as well as anyone on earth. People ruin things by making "better than…" Comparisons. These aren't superheroes or competitive athletes. This is Art, and the artists have come along way beyond seeing what they do as a competition
“what makes english drummers seperate ftom american drummers?” interviewer in english pompous voice,”english play simpler, one on the kick and one on the snare” bang goes Chester!
So good. But unless you've heard all of Genesis, that is a bold statement. These two guys had some of the very best drumming ever heard by anyone (outside of straight up jazz drummers). Playing for Weather Report AND Zappa says enough about Chester's chops. He played with Phil for his nearly his entire rock career. These two are the best and Phil led the way. Collins loved his days with Brand X, but Genesis was HIS band. He did his best work with them.
Right on!! Just found some stuff he's did with John Goodsall from Brand X,call Fire Merchants. What a great combo they make, really playing off each other. Just found this sweet demo he put out: /watch?v=FkybH3yBf1A&fmt=18 . I'm not a musician, so I can't even begin to break down what he's doing there at the beginning. But it's just so hot!

just Jennifer he did do drugs, he smoked pot when drumming the lamb shows, I have photos of Phil at headley grange ( lamb rehearsal venue) where he is rolling a joint at the breakfast table and if you watch the lamb reissue vid at 2:05 he actually admits it.
Just a lot of people come on these vids and talk BS mate, anyone who knows nothing about Genesis history shouldn’t post nonsense. Though with hindsight Phil really played that lamb show exquisitely considering he was stoned performing those complicated drum parts. The mans a legend to me.

😊
They both were SO musical and made the difficult sound easy.
@@Frank1979Zappa interesting name, was that the year you first saw Frank?

The greatest drum duo in rock history.
Two of the greatest!
Awesome!!! Can't say enough about them!!! Just the BEST!!!
