Boy With a Long Name Rakugo in English

Takako "Tammy" Ota, our tour coordinator and one of our Kyoto guides is also an accomplished amateur Rakugo in English performer. She tells the story of "Jugemu", or a "Boy With a Long Name", a popular traditional Rakugo story that was first performed in the late 17th century. It has a simple story, with the most humorous part being the repetition of a ridiculously long name. Jugemu got into a fight with a friend one day, and the friend suffered a large bump on his head. In protest, he went crying to Jugemu's parents. However, due to the amount of time it took to recite his name, by the time he finished, the bump on his head had already healed.
Rakugo is a traditional Japanese comedic performance. A lone storyteller dressed in traditional clothing sits in the “seiza” or kneeling position on a raised platform. Using only a folding fan and small cloth as props, the Rakugo artist tells a long and complicated comical, or sometimes sentimental story. The story always involves the dialogue of two or more characters. The difference between the characters is depicted only through a change in pitch and/or tone, and a slight turn of the head. It is said that the origins go back as far as 900 years ago when Buddhist monks used comedy to liven up their sermons. But Rakugo, as it is today, started during the Edo Period when it became popular with the lower classes.
