    Just wondering, would you ever consider doing a video on your career/schooling experiences? Things like how was college, med school, getting a PhD, why you chose dermatology, things like that. I’ve always been really curious since I want to become a physician and I know you’d, as always, give your honest opinion on your experience. Not sure if anyone else is interested, but I’m definitely curious about it :)

      I think she mentioned in a few early videos that she liked dermatology because it's a "looking" specialty, as in she can tell a lot about a person's health just by examining their skin closely with microscope, no need for fancy expensive tests. She said you can tell a person is diabetic just by looking at their nails. :) But not sure she has said anything about all the other stuff. Would love to hear it all!

But I too would enjoy Dr Drey taking the time to perhaps find a few things from Paula’s Choice that are likely to be good for a wide audience.

    I was under a dermatologist's care for most of my life for sensitive skin. When I was teens through 20's and even early 30's had bad cystic acne and rosacea. I always followed the advice that was given to me religiously because I knew I didn't know better than a dermatologist, and my skin eventually not only cleared up, but was in very good condition. I don't know why it's so hard for people to accept that expensive doesn't equal better, and that the "keep it simple" mantra is the best solution. I find myself banging my head against a wall, I can't even imagine what it's like for you but can I get an AMEN for everything you just said.

    • @perfumaphilia3246
      @perfumaphilia3246 5 лет назад +8

      People love the look of luxury packaging and the way it makes them feel to use expensive products. I got swept up in it too. It's a fantasy.

    • @michelleisabel
      @michelleisabel 5 лет назад +7

      @@perfumaphilia3246 I totally understand that, and if you have no skin issues and can afford it, by all means have at it! I only wish I could slap whatever I wanted on my face without issues. I just get a bit crazy when I see people - as Dr. Dray said - possibly CAUSING the irritation to their skin from continually trying different skin care lines that are loaded with fragrance and other irritants just because of the pretty packaging. My friends come to me for skin care advice all the time because they know I'm always on top of it, and when I tell them in order to calm down their skin they need to go back to basics they go out and buy La Mer or something instead. Sigh.

    • @perfumaphilia3246
      @perfumaphilia3246 5 лет назад +8

      @@michelleisabel Yeah, I hear you! Expensive skincare becomes almost like a weird, mindless habit for people. Those products are a feast for the senses and it's difficult for people to give up, even if they KNOW it's causing issues for them (but most people don't realize).
      I don't and have never had the luxury of slapping just anything on my face and body either, but I got sucked into that world for a while. I have very dry, sensitive skin, mild rosacea, and keratosis pilaris. I experimented with all kinds of expensive products, because I was convinced that investing more money meant I had a better chance of resolving my skin issues (back then I didn't know better). Then I became enchanted with luxury, wanted to try all the hyped up products, and lost sight of my own skin's needs (and my skin either showed no improvement or got worse as a result). Well, I've learned my lesson now and know better. My skin and wallet thank me tremendously.
      Good on you for staying educated on skincare! So few really take the time to research this topic, and a few out of that group truly don't care. At the end of the day, some people would rather buy the sexy petrolatum in the pretty tub with the $100 price tag, or the serum with mangosteen-wild berry-probiotic-unicorn tear-slug secretion that does nothing because it makes them feel good, and there's nothing you can do or say.

    • @blueeyedbeauty2496
      @blueeyedbeauty2496 5 лет назад +3

      They hyper inflate the importance of removing the "deadly 6" or whatever it is. They hyper inflate the packaging and marketing. And people are paying for it and giving it glowing reviews (I would assume quite a bit of that has to be self delusion to rationalize paying so much for a product you can get for so much less).

      All The Artsy maybe they do hyper inflate the importance of removing the deadly 6 and the packaging. I personally really like the packaging. I was on accutane for 8 months, ive had bad acne for a long time. I feel like I’ve tried a million different skin care lines and nothing has come even close to making my skin look as good as drunk elephant. It is expensive but it lasts for a long time and I don’t have acne, my hyperpigmentation is gone, and the texture of my skin is dramatically improved thanks to the drunk elephant line so it’s worth it for me.

    Since watching you, I've drastically simplified my skin care routine and my face is HAPPY! I have oily skin w/enlarged pores. I now wash with cerave, alternate w/2% salacylic acid leaving on for 2min and rinse. I dont dry my face and apply the hada labo gel to my damp face followed with moisturizer and or sunscreen. My pimples have greatly diminished. And can I just say how amazing it feels when I put on sunscreen! I just feel protected and it's silly how such a small thing makes me feel so good ha

      I watch a TON of her videos, and I know she said that using a product with Retinaldyhide in it, is one step closer on a biological level, to what prescription retinoids do. The cream I’m currently using is .5 Retinaldyhide, but I’m going up to .1 soon. It is exclusive to physicians, in theory, but if you tolerate retinol well, you should be ok with this, and I have purchased it at Derm Store online. It’s the Avene cream. Hope that helps, here’s a link to the .05

    I’m so excited I found your channel and this video. I’m positive I’ve overworked my facial skin with all of these anti-aging products. After watching your video I realize the madness needs to stop. Everything you’ve mentioned not to do, I’ve done, At night for a year, Ive used a mild cleanser, makeup eraser cloth and a foreo sonic device to cleanse. Then, an AHA moisturizer and a retinol cream, with a serum. In the morning I use my vitamin C serum and then my sunscreen and makeup. PROBLEM- I started using drunk Elephants Passioni. Because I’ve used retinol for a year, I thought my olive complexion was strong. I used it 3 nights in a row. Need I say more? It’s been 13 days and I’m still peeling in places on my face that I didn’t apply to i,e. My under eye area. I did everything you said I shouldn’t do with the exception of moisturizing. I thought I could AHA it away or Foreo it away. The pealing keeps coming in waves. Help, please? Should I lay off of everything for now except moisture and sunscreen? Btw, I returned A Passioni to Sephora since you said there isn’t enough research yet. Wish makes sense. Thank you for any hep. Joni

    you are so kind to be detailed and informative about this. I'm mid 50's and have not ever used tretinoin but I have used retinol products briefly ( ROC). I think a good point is that marketing is going to really take advantage of vegan consumers. Add to that a large percentage of the population of baby boomers are seeking antiaging products. I agree the long llists on some of these products tends for me to pass on them. I still love Cerave products.

    DE retinol is retinol. Bakuchiol is listed as bakuchiol (ex : Bioderma sebium global, OSKIA Super 16). Retinol is often made from isoprene, often a byproduct of naphta or oil cracking so it is very commonly not animal-derived.

    Thanks for the discussion of Drunk Elephant. Bottom line, Retin A has been around since dirt, and it is available from MANY sellers at HALF the price of DE. 0.1% is the strongest available and it can be found in all sorts of serums, oils, etc, made by sellers like The Ordinary, Eva Naturals, School House, and others, most of whom ALSO take out unnecessary additives...which seems to be a DE mantra. It amazes me that people are willing to pay outrageous prices for stuff because of clever marketing.

My only concern is that Adapeline and prescriptions are too strong for some people, even if they aren't using any other actives or moisturizers with excessive ingredients/plant extracts. Can retinol cause brow loss?
    Here is an interesting thing. I’ve been using tretinoin (prescription) and retinol for years kind of off and on (I’m 46). Lately I had a 6-8 month break because I ran out of product and didn’t get to buy more. I also lately noticed that my brows are growing in a little to the point of me not needing to use a shadow to fill them in (I always did that very gently). About a month ago (edited: about 6-8 weeks ago) I went back on retinol, this time from Drunken Elephant and in the last week or 2 my brows again are very patchy and the new growth I had is gone. They are pretty much back to the crazy overplucked look I sported over 20 years ago.
    Retinol is the only thing I changed in my routine. I started googling it and I seem not to be alone with this experience.
    I use retinol almost daily because I have a pretty thick and oily skin especially my forehead can take it daily (daily on a forehead and no irritation. The rest of the face every second day to avoid irritation)
    I would love to hear your thoughts on that dr. Drey.
    Could it be from an actual irritation (even invisible) or from the actual vit A?

    I am 40 and just a year and a half ago I started using retinoid serum from the ordinary and I noticed a nice improvement in the texture of my skin. When differin went over the counter, I then switched to that one and I didn’t really noticed much of a difference, yes it does keep the skin more bright and smooth but I never experienced retinization at all, no peeling or irritation whatsoever (and I do have mild rosacea). I may try tretinoin but I feel my skin is in a good place and I may not need it yet. I am glad it’s not worth for me to spend all that money in this drunk elephant product.

    From Beautypedia: “Last, we wanted to mention that the brand’s claim of using vegan retinol is something most retinol products can claim. The vast majority of retinol is synthetic (made in a lab) and qualifies as vegan because it isn’t derived in whole or part from any animal.” Is this true? If so, isn’t the Drunk Elephant one just good ole retinol? In the ingredients list it states “retinol”. If it was bakuchiol, wouldn’t it have to state that instead seeing as they’re both totally different things?

    • @beauty_enthusiast

      TheChristel22 I was wondering this as well - I think all retinol is vegan and since she is making such a big deal about this throughout the video, it is making me second guess my understanding. When I hear things like encourages cell turnover... I start wondering if it is a good thing to be putting your system into overdrive. So does the research show that it is actually good for us or is it simply effective for anti-aging (cosmetic) purposes? In theory, something can help with wrinkles but not be good for you. Retinoids can actually improve the health of skin by inhibiting enzymes that breakdown crucial proteins, improve cell differentiation so that various types of skin cells perform their functions better and lower skin cancer risk (when used in conjunction with safe sun practices) by potentially reducing the amount of precancers formed etc. The benefits of retinoids, especially tretinoin, are varied and not only cosmetic.

    I am 52 and dont have any wrinkles or pigmentation and it is al due to Retin A 0.05%, 4% hydroquinone,ceramides, vit b3, vit c and a very cheap moisturizer and proper PA++++ SPF 50 daily.

    Yes, tretinoin is best. And great you can get it on prescription in the US (particularly if you’re a dermatologist yourself). But try the same in Europe. Never happens. Not even for medical reasons.

    I actually bought this and have been using it for about a month now and my face has never looked better and I had this weird sun damage on each side of my neck that looked like dirt creeping around to the middle of my neck and it is almost totally gone !! I just added about 2 weeks ago the serum and moisturizer from Peter Thomas Roth the with 20% THD Ascorbate, 3% E-antioxidant and 2% Ferulic Acid. What are your thought on that? I will add that I’ve been doing the Korean 7 step skin care for the last 6 months or so and my skin has never looked better. I get compliments from random people all the time in how good my skin was looking. What do you think about that regimen ? Too much? I know your a minimalist. I have treatment resistant depression and am in bed most of the time but something made me get up and start taking care of my face. I wouldn’t even wash it for weeks. Sad to say.

    Is it me or do you enjoy seeing Dr. Dray a bit sassy? I really do appreciate the honesty though. I'm happy to know that not all expensive skin care are better. Thank you so much for your share of knowledge. Give my love to your mom and Tybee!!!
