How to Throw Your Wakizashi to Fight (Musashi Did It Too)

  • Whenever there’s a scene of throwing the katana in movies and anime, there’s an argument that samurai would never do that to their “soul.” But for example, when Miyamoto Musashi fought with the Kusarigama chain-sickle user Shishido Nanigashi, he threw the Wakizashi against him to win. Throwing weapons such as Shuriken, Kusarigama chain ball, Jyutté short truncheon, etc., during a fight was something very common in the past.
So today, Seki sensei, the 22nd headmaster of Kobudo Asayama Ichiden Ryu with 400 years of history, will introduce fighting techniques throwing or dropping the Wakizashi. The final Kata fighting against two opponents is especially interesting, so please watch this video until the end. By the way, we have started a new online lesson on Sundays at 10:30 pm JST. Check out our Patreon page for more information!

The Kobudo Asayama Ichiden Ryu, of which Seki Sensei is the 22nd headmaster, was one of the most popular Ryuha styles during the Edo period. In our golden age, we had over 7,000 students nationwide. Today, we only have 100 students. Our dream is to revive the golden age of Asayama Ichiden Ryu while Seki Sensei is still the headmaster. We want future generations to remember Seki Sensei as the legendary Sōké who brought back the glory of our Ryuha. The power of Sensei’s left hand is evident in the sound of his katana, even when he appears to be casually demonstrating a cut it can be heard. Great video. Thank you and be safe

      Yes.
The best kitchen knives are tantamount to Katana.
It sings and vibrates as you unsheathe it. Then cuts the air like an eagles wingbeat, when you swing it properly.

The musashi did it too in the title is very funny to me. It's very in Musashi's philosophy to use every trick and technique at his disposal. Any wakizashi left unthrown when you are slain is a waste.

The beauty is in the simplicity.
We trained this last week and if it hits, even a nylon wakizashi will distract you enough to be vulnerable. At this distance it's also difficult to avoid.

You sort of see a similar technique in Chinese Dandao/Chang Dao manuals as well, the technique is supposedly used against spearmen in a 1v1 situation where as you bring your greatsword upwards and behind you (like a higher Hasso-No-Kamae but off to the side behind you), you secretly draw a knife or a short sword as you move into this stance. Once you're ready, the idea is the same, where you throw the knife to distract or disorientate your opponent and then close in with your greatsword

People seem to forget at the end of the day they are tools to use, and in a life or death situation the last thing on your mind is worrying about scratching or denting the weapon, they can be repaired alot easier than we can.

Throwing a sword may seem crazy but we see it in Fiore and actually some rapier and dagger sources cover throwing either the rapier or the dagger so it is martially valid if you ask me. Not something you do all the time but a quick way to get an advantage against an unsuspecting opponent. I suspect throwing a sword could be a good way of trying to kill someone you think you stand no chance against in close range combat. If it injures him, awesome but if he blocks it, you can use the window to run away.
The key is just having a clear plan of action with another weapon after you throw away one of your weapons. If it is your only weapon it is generally foolish otherwise.
This same principle is sometimes applied to spear combat in European sources too. I am curious how often spear throwing shows up in Japanese sources.

How do different body sizes and builds affect how one should handle these weapons? For example, if Peter Steele (Type O Negative) and Tom Hiddleston were both samurai masters, and they got in a fight, how would you expect their techniques to differ? This is both in terms of height and build.
