I think my favourite moment in the whole of An Idiot Abroad is when Karl tries to use "the traffic" as an excuse to leave the cuddle party, when it's like 10pm in the middle of the desert.

I'm from Sweden and the mentality here is much like the UK - I suppose everyone here are descendants of people who barley survived famine, whereas european-americans are descendants of people who came to a new world, full of opportunity and abundance. That could explain the difference in morale I think.

Boomer pretty much nailed it with the mentality differences between our cultures. The reason us Brits have that sceptical mindset is because most of the time positivity leads to disappointment and overall if you're pessimistic about something you don't have to worry about the outcome because when something positive comes out of it, it's more of a hype! This probably didn't make any sense to some people 😂

Yeah, King Boomer I think you've pretty much nailed the difference in psyche between America and here in terms of positivity. In Ireland it's at least as much as in Britain. There's such thing as "toxic positivity", which Karl touches upon in his inarticulate way - it can be poor for mental health. And in the case of America IMO, maybe it gets in the way of acknowledging the things that need changed in society, as "everything's ultimately gunna be fine" is the enemy of taking action. The whole "thoughts and prayers" phenomenon.

Being pessimistic is a good thing because as if you're expecting the worst and it doesn't happen then that's great. If something turns out good, that's just a bonus!
With regards to comedy, we also don't take ourselves too seriously and often poke fun at ourselves and our situations. British humour is often very self deprecating.

Honestly I think the scepticism in the uk is because we’ve been through a lot for a VERY long time…bombed by the Germans invaded by the romans and vikings, 1000 years of fighting between us, murderous cruel rulers, the plague etc…I think it’s just seeped through the ages to expect the worst. We’ve always had to just pull our socks up and get on with it. I think it’s just a stiff upper lip but be prepared attitude that’s been passed down to us all!

Yeah, really tough times that people in the UK had to live through, there are hardly any other countries that faced such adversity.
Especially when you consider that there wasn't even a UK at the time of the Roman or Viking invasions ;)
On the other hand, as a German I can't comment on this topic, as the sun has always shone out of our arses here ;)
Especially here in the "Ruhrpott", which is roughly the equivalent of northern England, where Karl comes from.
There are still a lot of people who look at you disparagingly, at best pityingly, because of the way you speak and behave.
Wild theory: That can cause you to carry a lot of scepticism around with you ;)

I'll explain to you exactly why we're so miserable in UK. I was once waiting at a burger joint for my food, there's about 10 of us, non of us are talking, this Caribbean man walks in and tries to get talkative, all smiles and laughs, each person he'd talk to he'd get 1 or 2 responses and then a few nods, no conversation carrying and it'd all go silent. He then says out loud, why are you all sad? what's wrong with you all? It just hit me there and then, this is not normal, a few of us looked at each other realising the same thing ... we're all feeling just below average but it's so normal for us that we don't think much of feeling a little sad. It got me thinking and it's the *Weather, climate and daylight hours.*
From November 1st until March 1st... it gets dark after 4-5 pm (7-8 hours of sunlight a day, most of that is cloudy and dark), it's cold, drizzly and miserable. People waiting at bus stops, train stations for commuting staring down at the floor or mostly busy on their devices. Absolute dreading the whole day at work only to know it's going to be miserable time indoors afterwards as it'll totally dark when you get home and it's the same thing next day and this is our life now.
March and October more or less the same. May is the driest month, best weather because of that. June/July are the warmest but it's raining most of the time. August and September are just a fair bit cooler especially september.... although we have been getting heatwaves recently but those don't last long and they end up being too warm and unbearable as UK dwellings aren't built for it.
That being said the biggest killer is the time from 1st November until 1st March, especially when you get ill, it's the most demoralising time of the year. The rest of the year is neither here and there and you're mostly recovering from the misery. The thought of having to do full time work in this misery just completely kills you of. There have been times when I was working minimum wage and it was donkey's labour, either sat in call centre or in a factory. *Those were my 20s and it was the worst decade of my life, wasn't a month went by where i didn't want to kill myself*
Visited my local GP many times and all they'd do is fob you of with a few pills which i'd never take as they wouldn't do an extensive check on what's wrong with you. After pestering them a bit i was then referred to a mental health professional, who took blood tests to check hormone levels and any chemical imbalances... found out NOTHING WRONG WITH ME. The doctor then explained, she said :
*Being sad due to a chemical imbalance is ONE thing, however feeling sad due to life circumstances is completely normal. Infact there'd be something wrong with you if you didn't feel sad despite things being this miserable. She then went on to say that Doctor's often prescribe medication for both reasons which is not right. As people who are chemically who take these medications, stop producing it's own necessary hormones for mood regulation because the brain signals to the body that there's enough hormones due to the medication, therefore people who were chemically fine to begin but generally sad due to life circumstances end up in a very bad state and dependant on those pills for the rest of their lives.*

In Britain the mentality stems from war time. Even though we said keep calm and carry on, when we were bombed for a year none stop by Germany we got used to shit that kept on coming. So we like to play the pessimist, because when things go to shit which typically they do we can't be disappointed & it can't be unexpected. The UK is part of the "old world" American was born in the new world.

I think you’re right, Americans seem very friendly and optimistic, while Brits seem negative, moody. Instead of optimism, Brits tend to have a stiff-upper-lip, which is a sort of acceptance, forbearance of an awful situation, but strive through it. Eg. Keep calm and carry on

In the Uk cuddle parties would end in tears😂
"Get the grapes" would be taken as a declaration of war. 😂

Have more fun, you didn't understand, but you hit the nail on the head with the difference between our football chants, it's your kind of fun is totally different like this glee stuff, that is crazy people smiling all the time being positive all the time, and get excited over the slightest things , which is fun, well funny to the British cos you make yourselves look crazy without us having to do anything except to sit back and let you carry on

Question, when you have fight dreams does everything feel like slow motion and when you connect, its with no power at all? Like hitting them with a feather duster. 😂 or is this just me🤪

We add mostly copper and silver to make lower karat gold it makes it more durable thats why your pre 1933 gold coins were mainly 22k to stop them getting dinked up so easily

I don't like heights either but I love flying prefer the traveling being at 40,000+ feet than the destination, you should watch One foot in the grave.
