@@AndreasFunnell Absolutely, and since posting the comment above, I've purchased a lot more cool old sets. I don't have display room for anymore now, so I probably have to sell some of it again, haha!
My major complaint about these guys is one single piece: The torso. Compared to the way the Rahi are built, I think the torso piece really limited the creativity, as well as over standardized the Toa. Just a year or so before, LEGO made the Slizer bots, which also used very similar construction techniques including having the torso house a lot of gear systems, except these had torsos made of multiple pieces, which allowed for greater variation between the elements. Breaking it into just two pieces would already be enough, top and bottom. But oh well. I am way too nostalgic about these guys to be stuck on that.
I know they're pretty limited, but the Toa Mata and Nuva have all and will always be my favorite sets. Nostalgia? Maybe. But the colors and masks were just so, so good.
the nuva are disappointing to me :/ the changes aren't that big to justify collecting all six (unlike the OGs), I still got 3, lol... same with the bohrok and bohrok-kal... just some silver bits and new masks (which are cool, ngl)

mine was Onua, cuz he had both hands and "fingers" (claws) and the mask was cool, and the green eyes - and the fact that he's a little hunchback mole man, lol... Pohatu was my least favorite, because he used his leg (I think I gave him a second cog so he could "walk"), he alos reminded me of the red slizer that had his head between his legs (what were they thinking?! I was building the guy "normally" with his head up)... but that was just my stupid-a$$ kid self, now I think Pohatu is OK - all the six OG are
G1 Masks have individual abilities. They do not grant elemental powers, but they unlock the one Toa actually has, so maskless Toa can't use his/her element.
Akamai might look weaker, but keep in mind that he got all the battle-oriented mask powers, Shielding, Speed, and Strength, and he also has Pohatu's foot extension, so his kicks'll probably hurt a lot. I also like to think of his other hand as a skull hammer/club. The man has a fricking claw ribcage and shoulder pads too, so he's built like a tank.

It's sad to think we will never see anything like _Bionicle_ from LEGO ever again. These toys were such a major part of my childhood. The story, the characters, the lore of the _Bionicle_ universe were all fantastic, and the comic books were the best reading material LEGO ever published. You know, I like to think that Bionicle inspired the armor permutations in _Halo 3,_ since many of the helmets introduced in that game and beyond look very similar to _Bionicle_ masks... the EOD, Rogue, GUNGNIR, and GRD helmets in particular.
This is one of the better reviews I’ve seen on Bionicle sets. Most people that do reviews find out that the good guys are the Toa and the the bad guy is Makuta and that they live on Mata Nui. But you have actually done your research on Bionicle and you know stuff like mask names. Nice job! 👍
I plan to do it for all of the 2001-2003 waves as those are the sets I have right now. If people really enjoy the series though or if I get hooked on them then it’ll definitely extend on to the rest of the line
Ngl, my favorite of the Toa Mata is Pohatu. Something about him having super speed and his kicking gimmick is awesome, and his design is pretty good too. I think I prefer the Mata over their Nuva forms though, mainly because it seems the masks on the Nuva come off whenever a gnat lands on it, whereas I don't have that issue with the Mata. Still gotta give Kopaka Nuva love though, he was my first bionicle, me and my Grandma went to the dollar store one night and there they were, Bionicles, and they were awesome as fuck. Now I am 23 and regret giving all of my bionicles away, so I went out and bought some old sets at a steal :) got all 6 Nuva and 3 bohrok (w/ Krana!) and Gahli Mata and Pohatu Mata. I haven't felt that happy in so long than when I picked em up, played with them and took em apart and built stuff with them. I wish we could get something that amazing again

Can't believe that i still have a chance to see these models at this quality once again. Thank you for your videos. Hope you make more. I can't stand the new BIONICLE :( Sadly.
That was pretty good. I'm mostly impressed that you have sets that new or almost new with such a small channel. I'd argue on a couple of your points (namely on articulation), mostly because it's unfair to judge a set on what came later down the line. Also, it's a little ironic that the Bohrok (the most clone-like of all the sets) also sold the best, so perhaps a common build model has more value than people think.
Thank you! I got the entire waves from 2001-2003 sealed 4-5 years ago and figured rather than keeping them sealed I should go ahead and build them all since it’s been such a long time since I had them as a kid. Bionicle is one of if not my favorite themes so I figured it would be worth the pain of opening sealed sets to relive it all and produce reviews and other content related to the theme. It is tough to not judge sets without bias of what came down the line, my issue with articulation is that they did it for the combination models, so they solved the problem but chose not to include it on the base models. It is interesting with the bohrok being such good sellers. Part of it could be due to them being the first “build an army” type of set for the theme and they were rather inexpensive
Bohroks sold so well, lego just rereleased them as Kal. Also, as hard as it is to review early Bionicle without comparing them to later models, you're doing pretty good job at it. I would say that you're the best reviewer I've seen in years. I love your format and style, as well as the amount of research you seems to put in your videos. I kinda wish you weren't grouping clone sets together so we would have more of your videos to watch^^
My favourite waves of Toa in order is Mata, Metru, Mahri. The Mata looked really good. All of them had amazing mask designs, and unique weapons from one another. Their colour schemes were great as well. Their main flaw was that they were smaller and simpler than the waves that came afterwards. I for one am a fan of simple yet solid designs, which is why this wave is my favourite. Also paired with the fact that they came from the coolest era of Bionicle IMO. The Toa Metru had the perfect balance between play features and articulation. Their mask designs were great, and their overall designs were very refreshing. Their main flaw was that they lacked colour variation of the prior waves. This was something they fixed with Lhikan and the Toa Hagah. I also never liked that their arms are angled in such a way that when you swing their arm too far, it hits their head. The Toa Mahri brought lots of diversity in designs, where together, form to make an awesome looking team. They are what I wished the Inika were. They brought back masks similar to the Toa Metru, and brought back melee weapons (my favourite kind of weapon). They were also larger and weighed quite a bit more than the previous waves asides from the Inika. Their main flaw is that their torsos are less complete from previous waves, and some were given quite a bit more love to their designs than others. You can't tell me Hewkii costed the same amount of money to produce as Jaller and Hahli.
@@AllOutBrick Currently I'm staying in Indonesia for a couple of months due to work stuff, and there's an online seller here who sells almost every Bionicle set at its original price and sealed. Sadly it doesn't ship to other countries :')
Revisiting this for the first time since 2020, all of the parts in medium blue on Gali (8533) remain exclusive to that set. As is the case for the "Voodoo arm" on Lewa (8535) in lime green. Apart from Lea's Axe, each of the Toa's weapons would eventually be repurposed or recolored in other themes as well, with the Climbing Hooks from Gali and the Digging Claws from Onua (8532) being the most common.
Man, my first Toa was Pohatu. What’s special about set specifically, is that I stole it from my older cousin and that’s what sparked my Bionicle craze 😂

uhh actually the masks gave them additional powers such as shielding, strength, speed, water breathing, levitation and xray vision. not elements. there was very few elemental masks back in the day and non gave them toa level range of use over the element. your thinking g2 for elemental masks
@@AllOutBrick at least you know now, make sure you're looking at legitimate sources of bionicle lore. i'd advise looking at biosector01.com next time you write scripts
Also I wanna add that in the history, the masks they searched didn't have color, they were silver, until a Toa put them. In that moment the mask taken the color of the Toa. Now in set, the different color version of the masks were sold as collectibles. It was in BIONICLE G2 that the masks granted them elemental powers. Now in G1 there were some mask with elemental powers, but none of the six shown here.
Wait I’m really getting back into Lego and as a kid I had a wide variety of sets and themes..now I’m mainly focusing on Star Wars only but I have all of the original Bionicle sets. Are you telling me these are worth a lot of money? Cause I personally don’t care for Bionicle all that much. I wouldn’t mind selling these. I have these like miniature versions of these original ones as well. I’ve been going through all my old sets from the 90s-mid 00’s trying to see which ones have appreciated and need rebuilding and I literally left all the Bionicle sets behind in a cardboard box. Wow I feel so bad for neglecting them lol
It wasn't the make of the canisters that caused memory loss, it was the damage done to the pod that left them floating until Takua summoned then to the island
@@roguespartan2854 Do what by accident? The Toa Mata had been ejected from the Codrex long ago, like a thousand years before, shooting up into the air and then down into the water, but the canisters were malfunctioning. From what I gather the Turaga asked Takua to gather the Toa Stones in order to summon the Toa Mata though, but I could be remembering that wrong. Anyway, doing so caused the Canisters to drift towards the beacon the energy from the stones created in the Amaja Nui circle at Kini Nui once Takua placed them down into them. Otherwise they had been drifting in the water aimlessly for a thousand years. They were ejected the moment the Great Spirit "fell asleep" though.
yeah, I've got all six of these ^^ the nostalgia is strong in these (the Nuva rehashes were kinda lame, so I only got 3 of these: red, black, and brown... 3 base bohrok: again red, black, and brown - 'cuz they're combinable... and a one red rahkshi... and a lonely turaga Whenua... and the Muaka & Kane-Ra... and that's my rather small, incomplete bionicle collection, because I got too old for these and fell out, which bums me out, because the toa metru were pretty dope + the second movie which they're in... The Slizer/Throwbots collection that I have is a little bigger, but not complete, either... like two short, yeah, the light brown one and the purple one I do not own... but I've got the newer orange one and the one that rides the huge chopper bike, that one's such a fun build, the alt build is fun, too... Roboriders, the slizer successors and bionicle predecessors, I think I have only two: Onyx/black, and Power/yellow - again, a combination build... plus the tiny red volcano climber four wheeler... and that's all I've got, not to brag or anything)
That is some iconic lockdown hair. I've watched a bunch of your other Bionicls videos but never paid attention to the dates, so I'm assuming this was early on in the series?

The usage of the Hau always confused me; it can only shield the individual, the Hau Nuva could shield others; so what if someone used the regular Hau while someone was piggybacking off them? Does it just fling them away from the wearer like “sorry no protection for you Kohli-head!” 😭😭

@@AllOutBrick Fair enough.
Just bought Lewa sealed for 7$ and the feeling of opening that canister was just 💯
Hold up... what?! Where did you get that deal?!
@@AllOutBrick Currently I'm staying in Indonesia for a couple of months due to work stuff, and there's an online seller here who sells almost every Bionicle set at its original price and sealed. Sadly it doesn't ship to other countries :')
I envy you man!!
Pretty cool channel, glad I got suggested, subbed. Keep up the good work!
Just subscribed, these are the kind of bionicle channels we need!
Were all of these sets sealed? The sheen on the plastic makes them look brand new!
Hope you keep the bionicle line content, this is amazing:)
Ces canettes n'ont pas pris en une ride en 20 ans. Quelle beauté.
Please do the rest of the line, I loved Bionicles so much!
I miss these toys. I wish I kept it all together
That intro made me smile~
I really like ur videos. I hope this channel Will be huge
I hope so too! Numbers surely will come over time, let's build a great community first
I remember having the green and red ones and a later white one with a double ended spear
These toa are too cool keep it up
Is it possible to get these with the cases and everything in 2023?
Revisiting this for the first time since 2020, all of the parts in medium blue on Gali (8533) remain exclusive to that set. As is the case for the "Voodoo arm" on Lewa (8535) in lime green. Apart from Lea's Axe, each of the Toa's weapons would eventually be repurposed or recolored in other themes as well, with the Climbing Hooks from Gali and the Digging Claws from Onua (8532) being the most common.
Man, my first Toa was Pohatu. What’s special about set specifically, is that I stole it from my older cousin and that’s what sparked my Bionicle craze 😂
and your thief career (jk) 🤣
Huh I remember these I wish they didn’t struggle with sales so they were still made I used to love these especially as they made new series and got cooler
Such a nostalgia.
hold up, gotta respect that this guy went out and got sealed canisters of all 6 toa. Those are 20 years old now! Crazy to see!
Just got all the his mata yesterday Tuesday just the canisters are cool will be opening this things on Friday for someone who missed g1 and g2 perfect way to start 20 years later
ahh man i wished they release them again for collection
the Toa Mata are the childhood of many
Just bought all these guys they weren't cheap but they are great!
uhh actually the masks gave them additional powers such as shielding, strength, speed, water breathing, levitation and xray vision. not elements. there was very few elemental masks back in the day and non gave them toa level range of use over the element.
your thinking g2 for elemental masks
Yep. You are right. I messed up on that line, but the blog post on our site doesn't have that issue!
For years, I thought the Golden Masks were fake, I had one for the Red one but I thought he was the only one who had one as a kid.
HEY! I remember that. Didn't he do it by accident?
WOW !!! The quality is GOOOOOOD !! Proud to sub ! 😉
I'm SO happy to see a new reviewer of bionicle ! I sub NOW
Just found ur channel, love the production! Very high end
I only managed to get the Happy Meal Version. Now I own nothing. From that time I recall Furby, Poochi and Aibo.
20th Anniversary of Bionicle (2001-2021)
yeah, I've got all six of these ^^ the nostalgia is strong in these (the Nuva rehashes were kinda lame, so I only got 3 of these: red, black, and brown...
Great video. You need more views forsure! Keep it up!!!
I really wanted these but I never got them now I gotta pay a hella lot of money your lucky to get your hand on these
Tan is a light brown. Gray however, is a darker shade of white.
Are you gonna do Hero Factory and Bionicle G2 soon?
Good review my guy! I just wish you would have shown some of the posters that came with a few toa you had their. You Actually had 2 different releases of the Toa Mata there! Some came with mini posters and cd's and some didn't.
I remember my dad bought me the green one. Memories…
They look like the coolest sodas in the world
I wish Lego can bring them back as rereleases with different and durable cans packaging
Pohautu came to me in the mail today. He came 4 hours late but hey, I got him. Am planning on buying onua next and then tahu.
HOW DID YOU GET THEM
The 2 toa heads on akami is a hammer made out of skulls.
Didn’t the gold masks just give them all their mask powers(shielding, super speed, etc.) not elemental powers?
yes your right
They did. Poor choice of words on my end for that, but the blog post for these sets on our site has the proper explanation
Where did you get all those back in 2000’s Bionicle? Are they still sold in online or any lego store?
Oooh the memories 😌😏
YES I WANNA SEE ALL OF THEM!!!
Akamai's two heads are supposed to be a warhammer/mace type weapon. But I dont blame you, it does look really weird cause it is two heads lol.
Nostalgia.
Welcome to the Montreal Canadiens, Christian!
will you review the rest of the 2008 and 2009-2010 sets after this?
Toa Mata = S tier (I personally give them a score of 9.0)
Awesome breakdown!
The usage of the Hau always confused me; it can only shield the individual, the Hau Nuva could shield others; so what if someone used the regular Hau while someone was piggybacking off them? Does it just fling them away from the wearer like “sorry no protection for you Kohli-head!” 😭😭
The best of the best 💪
i wish i had them all, i only got Gali, i also had Gali Nuva but some of the pieces were lost and the way i got Gali was from Ebay and i got Gali Nuva from my aunts house in my cousins room
