I was born too late... But it's okay, I live in the past, because I am a professional classic car mechanic. If I can't find a part I need, I can make it. The old fashioned way. I feel quite alone in this. I barely get by, but I don't care. I love what I do, so I do it well. The last of a dying breed: those who live for mechanical power...

What a thought-provoking video. Today manufacturing is not about power or size. It's about the opposite, precision and miniaturization. It's very interesting that we had to go through one to get to the other.
There's another really interesting thing in here. He is talking about how a large part of the horsepower produced in America is mobile, coming from cars, tractors, and so on. In the 19th century, he says, American power came from centralized power plants, now (meaning the '40s) the vast majority of it is mobile. What is really interesting is that today (2010s) we are going back the other way. An electric car does not *generate* power at all, it just transfers power created elsewhere. As we move our transportation needs to electricity, we will be re-centralizing the power creation of the country. I'm not sure what this means for the future.*
*Although, this isn't necessarily true. It's going to be interesting to see how it plays out. We don't need a Hoover Dam to generate power for 10 million people; rather every house will create its own small portion of the power in solar and wind; each small town might have a wind farm with 10 windmills. So, it won't necessarily be centralized like it was at the turn of the last century, but it will still be much more shared and combined than it was 50 years ago. This stuff is interesting.

Imagine being uncritical enough to accept a 1940s auto industry propaganda film at face value. This is a fascinating window into mid-century American triumphalism, and for that reason, a valuable historical document. But don't let yourself be duped by propaganda half a century past its shelf life.

The engines of 1940 were a lot less fuel efficient than nowadays.
The power of 1940 made it easy to win WWII. But since 1945, only 1 conflict involving the USA has been a walk in the park: Gulf War I.
The world has kept moving, and the titans of power employ far fewer workers now than then. Detroit has collapsed.

Imagine that through the scope of people living in that era, the notion of pursuing a higher standard of living was one of many of their ambitions. To see how far the country has fallen from that idea, is really a slap in the face.

Rampant degeneracy, a heightened military industrial complex, a invasion of propaganda and ideological war into the hearts and minds of citizens; in addition to all the irrelevant distractions leading to a break down the social structure in our society. Fading middle class, higher cost of living and forced paradigms are seen. Through economic turmoil, the breakdown in the social structure accelerated due to radicalization between class and identity. America has lost its soul.

Marvelous comment! Idiocy in your comment, really can't you read between the lines? America is often referred to as USA and vise versa. Just because it a Continent of a few nation's doesn't mean that it can't be a Nation and a Continent at the same time. I'm pretty sure in the dictionary, it'd say the same thing I just said. And since there is two America's obviously we have to empathise which one were talking about and saying USA is obviously talking about North America!
