We went here 10 years ago. I think it was the first year you could take a complete tour right up into the bell tower and onto the roof. Absolutely stunning. Thank you for the wonderful memories.
Beautiful video. It missed two of the best monuments. The monument of Lady Waller, the wife of General William Waller, an important general in the Parliamentarian army. She died while he was fighting royalist forces IIRC. And there is a monument on the same wall that appears as a broken column. An Irish man moved to Somerset with his family, all of whom died. Thus, his line of family was broken, signified by the broken column. The docent told us the story and it felt very sad even 200+ years past.
This is a stunning light filled church and well worth a visit. I visted here about 2012 and felt particularly annoyed by the church guide who talked about it's history as a Benedictine Abbey and how the monks were expelled and their monastery was dissolced due to their 'lax ways'. Admittedly this was the case in some monasteries but he failed to mention that the house was dissolved due the greed of Henry VIII who wanted the revenue the sale of all the English monasteries provided to fill his coffers.
@@OpenRoader And thankyou for your very courteous reply. Best wishes from here in Australia where we (in rural Victoria) are in stage 3 lockdown due to COVID 19. Melbourne is in stage 4 lockdown.
England is so fortunate to have such beautiful cathedrals and churches and many of them are in such stunning settings. I recall visiting the ruins of Fountains Abbey on a glorious sunny day in 2006.
Beautiful straingh and conic , esp the fan vault . It's thin and sharp. Thanks for the film
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you for watching and your comments
Доброго дня ❤️. В каком веке был построен этот храм? Почему раньше могли такое сделать, а сейчас нет?

It was truly a beautiful building. But if you have vertigo. Do not try the tower tour. 😵💫
That would have been amazing to see
I remember going on a school trip and doing brass rubbings of the crypts on the floor. I must have only been about 8 or 9.
Wow, this was a field trip for you. I saw your video where you talked about playing with other boys at that other location. Amazing
