Sauber is actually one of the most important teams in modern F1. They brought in 2 of the biggest sponsors in F1- Red Bull and Petronas. They brought back the Mercedes Benz name back to F1 as an engine manufacturer. They gave debuts to Sebastian, Kimi, Massa and Schumacher (Le Mans team).

@@TommoMcCluskey The Sauber, BMW and Mercedes teams are the only teams who've had major sponsorship from Petronas right? Mercedes are also creeping up with Sauber's 14 Year record with Petronas too
Petronas will be seen like Red Bull, Marlboro, John Player Special and a few others. It's an iconic brand and without them; mercedes might not be what they are today 🤷♂️.
With Mercedes already won so many championships, the Petronas livery is already an iconic brand in F1 history. I believe both Mercedes and Petronas would want to continue that partnership. Mercedes would want to continue winning the races using the fuel and expertise and facilities that Petronas can provide. Likewise, Petronas would need a brand like Mercedes to help with their marketing.
Malaysian here! I remember in 2010 when Caterham first joined (it was owned by Malaysian Tony Fernandes) there was talk that he wanted to pull Malaysian brands over (naturally), and criticised Petronas for not coming on board (cause national pride etc), thank goodness Petronas stuck with their guns as they would have been stuck in a back marker that dissolved after 4 years, instead they formed a big part of the livery for the most successful side in F1 history
Just recently became an AMG Petronas fan for my first ever F1 team (been a Valtteri Bottas fan since 2016, so I guess it was bound to happen eventually). Very informative video, really enjoyed it :)
When you do these sponsor history type videos I think you should delve into as many areas as you can, like for example Petronas is now a MotoGP team a very successful one in its debut year and was once a world superbike effort and also I believe they did stuff in Le Mans but I'm not as clued up on that
TBH Malaysian are the most patriotic and nationalistic people out there. Anything that comes from Malaysia that goes worldwide, will be cheered and applauded by Malaysian, they go to every social media and every comments section to do just that.

The history of Petronas is pretty much straight forward and them sponsoring the Mercedes Benz F1 team was a huge success for both parties. They pretty much dominant the F1 ehh.
Since the Mercedes livery hasn't changed that much over the past few years, I'd say, that we later look back at the 2010s (& potentially 20s) and say "Such an Iconic livery, they really dominated the sport".. Just my thoughts.
Can i just say Tommo F1 has the cleanest youtube channel regarding thumbnails, graphics etc. which isnt surprising given its his passion but it looks so clean and consistent
Fun fact- Red Bull actually owned part of Sauber till 2001, when Peter Sauber risked the whole company to sign Kimi Raikkonen over Red Bull driver Enrique Bernoldi.
Stellar mate! Have you seen The Vox story on why the Russian oil company is in Football? I have a feeling Petronas are far too corporate for anything dodgy but curious if you got a whiff of anything strange. Or if this is just run of the mill branding move considering how high profile the success is. Keep em coming!
petronas moved to mercedes as mercedes already knew that they would win races. in 2010 my mum worked as a doctor and worked on a mercedes member who predicted that at the 2014 regulation change they would in the championship and win a few more. they had probably told petronas this and this is what most likely got them hooked to mercedes.
Petronas had a special deal with BMW: All new BMW cars must be firstly filled with their products in several countries. As BMW left F1 they did not want to renounce on that lucrative deal. Therefore they made the move to Mercedes. Something Peter Sauber obviously couldn‘t offer as he was rebuying the team.

Here's some facts for new motorsport fans who's interested to know Petronas involvement in motorsport: Before F1, Petronas was heavily involved in local motorsports scene especially in rallying where the brand first sponsored a rally team called Petronas EON Racing Team (one of the top rally teams in the 90s) which then they became the title sponsor the Malaysian Rally Championship (a national rally championship) from 1992 to 1999. Nowadays, the only championship that Petronas is still supporting through sponsorship is Malaysian Cup Prix (a national motorcycle racing). That's it all folks! ✌🏼
Interestingly, the Malaysian Gas and Oil Company, PETRONAS has also sponsoring to other Motorsport racing series such as Japanese Motorsport racing series, Super GT for the Lexus TOM’s SC430 GT500 during the 2008 season, MotoGP and the Japanese Open Wheel racing series by the name of Super Formula during the 2014 season since Gran Turismo 7 introduced to Japanese Motorsport racing series, especially to Super Formula not only just for Formula 1 with Mercedes.
