So the soil particles are getting smashed together to achieve the cohession of the particles?

Compaction is the process of rearranging, shearing and crushing the particles as to expel the air (some water) as to reduce the void ratio of the material resulting in densification of the soil. Denser soils can then sustain greater loads with an enhanced bearing capacity and also help to mitigate drainage.
Some studies have been done thus far in obtaining the effectiveness of Dynamic Compactors (as in the video) based upon both field and numerical studies.
