whats your irish background -- i.e. did you grow up in a gaeltacht? which dialect are you proficient in?

I grew up in the West Kerry Gaeltacht, Corca Dhuibhne. As I say towards the end of the video, I speak the Munster dialect of Irish.

Why do you say fada with a th sound on the d? That is not how we pronounce the word or the letter d.

Good question! The sound that I am making is how 'd' sounds in Irish when it is adjacent to a broad vowel ('a', 'o', 'u'). Listen here to how 'fada' is pronounced in the three main dialects of Irish: www.focloir.ie/ga/dictionary/ei/fada When 'd' is adjacent to a slender vowel ('i', 'e') it can sound more like the sound that you make when saying a word like 'direct' or 'lid' in English. The pronunciation of this 'slender d' varies more depending on the dialect spoken. Compare, for instance, the differences between dialects in terms of how the word 'díreach' is pronounced: www.focloir.ie/ga/dictionary/ei/fada. I hope that this helps 😉
