The first job i ever did on that Bridgeport was before it was wired up . Hand slotting a boring bar for multiple tool bit locations . Set up & job completed , no power required !
Nice set of arms, Max, I think they’ll be adequate to hold up that 3 pound display head 😂 100% agree with learning the old-school methods first 👍 Thanks for bringing us along Cheers….
Hi Max, Totally agree with you. All machining apprentices should be made to use the dials on the machine taking into consideration wear and backlash, it gives them a better appreciation of how things work ( or not). All the skills of yesteryear are being lost and that is not only a shame, but its taking away all the satisfaction of saying, yeah I had a few issues, but, I made that, me, I made that, and I'm proud of that part. Best wishes, Mal.
What a brilliant and generous gift. Took me a little while to guess what these were. Brilliant sense of humour too - we need more of that these days! Cheers!
G'day Max. Very nice job cutting out, setting up & welding all the bits together. With the arm on the DRO, I was wondering if it would have been better to fit the swivel bracket below the movable arm, in the round case, section in the event you have to swing the main arm around. Your welcome to have a look at my HM 54GV in the way I made & fitted up the Linea scale, stops etc. Excellent video, Thanks
I'm new to machining. Having purchased an old hercus 9AH. I use all old tools. The other day a friend gave me a set of digital verniers and I find I havnt used the old ones since. It's harder to return to old ways once new ones are introduced. Like life..Cheers mate
Thanks Max, Very generous gift, I see them advertised “on sale” in the Hairy’s November catalog. Presso had a good video on putting DRO on his Bridgeport. Cheers
kranky arms sounds like something you get after a few at the pub on a Friday night - the degree of super model vision is also directly proportion to the quantity of beer consumed the old fashion beer googles
Very nice work Max. Certainly a nice upgrade. I need to put a DRO on my 9x42 mill. I purchased it in 1985 new. I've been reading the dials for awhile. Have a good weekend. 👍 Cheers.
I've been machining for five years now, I've had a dro for my milling machine for three years it's still in the box,lol ..hopefully I can watch how you install your and follow through, great video max, keep'um coming.
I’d say; About time. But you have so much to do there, I’m surprised you ever got to it. I just installed one on my surface grinder. It’s maddening trying to grind one or two tenths when the wheel has slop you can’t remove because they use a worm and gear with spacing determined by the holes they made in the castings, which can’t be adjusted. Since I’m retired I bought ToAuto models with 1um scales. I’ve had two of them for close to four years with no problems, and the third just purchased for my grinder. They’re very helpful, have a number of videos as to installation< for those who are new at this and videos as to using them. I mounted a short one on my tailstock because I hate the idea of using a crappy calipers as some do as they aren’t accurate, and this way all three readouts are in the same space. I also mounted the lathe model on a round bar on the carriage where the safety shield and my light is mounted.
I sure that new DRO is going to be a time saver....I really enjoy watching you use those old methods.....My machines don't have DROs.....Thanks for sharing.
"Half working on"... I know that procedure well! So welcome to the 2000's Max! Even back then DRO's arms came with the Kranky arms in the box. 🤣 Nevertheless the poor old Bridgey will love you for the upgrade. I don't mind a lathe sans a DRO. however on a mill they are indispensable. Cheers mate
The only reason I added a DRO to my Mill was for the radius function and the bolt hole pattern function. Aside from that even with it I still find myself setting my dials. How’s the saying go, can’t teach an old dog new tricks.
Happy days Max, g'day mate, welcome to the 21st century lol. Yeah the knowledge and skill in using dials should come first imho, that said I struggled like buggery when my lathe dro went down 😂
I understand your observations re learning to use the dials, as a late arrival however, I am all in favour of being able to make what I want as nicely as I can with the shortest possible learning curve. In reality I don’t necessarily have a spare few years to learn my way. I am really impressed at the rigidity and sturdy nature of the arm, I wince every time I see an otherwise capable machinist wrestle with Chinese jelly mountings.
7:00. Now there's an image I'm never going to be able to unsee. Thanks for that Max! 😮 Edited. Bloody hell, I stop the video to make the comment, then you tell us all we won't be able to unsee it, when I start the video again. I might have to unsubscribe!😅😅
I twigged what you were making, but I didn't know what they were for. I thought they were to mount your video cameras on, lol. That's because I haven't got any DRO's. Cheers, Max, entertaining.......Tony
Steve Summers, Brian Bloc, Always Sunny in the Shop, and Steve Watkins have all done videos on the DRO and I believe three of them had to modify to set the rulers on.
Another additive to operator harmony. Although disappointed with showing welding with unprotected glove. Yes using the basic features of a machine with a dial indicator gives higher skill & understanding. DRO's are great on the long axis. A first choice. A nice little project some have fixed DRO mounts. But with the crankys sight line is improved.
Cheers . I have worn out 100's of right hand gloves in my career but no left hand ones ! I do not like the feel of them with the small mig , i could use a tig glove if i remember . 👍
If it helps any your welcome to come & photo & measure up brackets & locations etc where the scales are mounted on my Bridgeport, but I’ve only got X & Y, axis. No Knee scale on mine yet, maybe one day. Might save you time having to work it all out perhaps. X axis is behind the table with alloy cover to keep the swarf out of the scale and reader head. You lose about 50mm of your rearward Y axis travel is all. Or I can just send you photos I guess.
Hi Max Power cut no DRO who turning the motor 😅. Brackets make them beefe found cross on 2 machines vibration a problem numbers flicking. Mine got lumps steel in to dampen it other 1 got welded up beefer. Steve
Can you film using the mill when the power is out please? hahahahahaha

100% agree with learning the old-school methods first 👍
Thanks for bringing us along

Thanks Dean . I hope all is as well as it can be at your end . 👍
@ so far so good 🤞 Check your email Max I sent you some info

No DRO's when i was at trade school . They had a couple of NC machines with computer punch cards we had to type ! Cheers 👍
@@swanvalleymachineshop Yeah been there, we also had the peg board type, lots of fun, NOT. lol
What a brilliant and generous gift. Took me a little while to guess what these were. Brilliant sense of humour too - we need more of that these days! Cheers!
Yes . Thanks Stuart . 👍
RUclips machinists calendar?! Now that would be something seeing all our favorite machinists as pin ups !!!
Now , that would be a best seller ! 👍👍👍
Another high quality project from a true craftsman. Greetings from the oldest town in Texas, USA, Nacogdoches.
Thanks 👍
Grats on getting the DRO install started. Incredibly convenient. I run touchdro on my mill and lathe, and couldn’t live without it
Cheers ! 👍
Nice addition, the best features I find is the 1/2 function and bolt hole function routine, saves me lifting the heavy dividing table onto the mill.
I agree ! 👍
G'day Max. Very nice job cutting out, setting up & welding all the bits together. With the arm on the DRO, I was wondering if it would have been better to fit the swivel bracket below the movable arm, in the round case, section in the event you have to swing the main arm around.

Excellent video, Thanks
The main arm will still swivel around . The DRO cables will run with the existing lighting cables . 👍
Supermodel Max! I agree with you about learning to machine using the dials, and not relying on the DRO.
No worries 👍
You can always tell when an engineer is happy as they say nothing but smile
Lol , Cheers 👍

Certainly a nice upgrade.

Thanks Max,you and your channel are the best 😊
Thanks 👍

I use my DROs primarily as a sanity check.
No worries . It will take a bit of getting used to ! Cheers 👍
Great articulated design, excellent ergonomics Max.
Thanks 👍
My mashines tend to stop in a powerlost when the DRO goes black 🤣🤣
Lol , see pinned comment ! 👍

No worries . Cheers 👍
"REALISTICALLY", great stuff! Thanks for the directional thoughts.
No worries 👍
Great advice for the new machinest Max!
No worries 👍
I didn't make the association between Kranky arms and DRO Arm...much nicer than the DRO factory ones.
Thanks . I copied the one on Olga ! 👍
I remember seeing you in Naughty Machinist
Ha Ha , 👍👍👍
Thank you Max!
Cheers 👍
They are handy when you need to drop in a 11 hole bolt circle. Doing it the old way keeps your math in check :)
Or fork out for a rotary table...
My indexing head will do any divisions as it's a wide range one , but dro bolt holes save setting the heavy thing up ! 👍
My eyes, my eyes.. the pain….😂😂
Lol 👍👍👍
G'day Max, I didn't realise that the official Swan Valley merch included calendars 🤣
Lol , not that type ! 👍
You truly surprised me. I had forgotten about your dro and thought you were making some more "tractor" parts.
Lol , Cheers 👍
when you have a powercut your brigdeport wont work either max 🙂
cheers
ben
See pinned comment ! 👍
Very good job friend Max
Thanks 👍
Max you really are as funny as a fight in a wheelbarrow😂😂😂😂
Lol , 👍

No worries . Lol , i just started another one that i am half working on ! 👍
Looking forward to what you come up with for mounting the scales. I need to tackle this job myself soon.
No worries 👍
A DRO will be very handy. Makes you win some time.
Personally I never used a DRO, and I can live very well without one :)
It will be a big time saver i think . Cheers 👍
The only reason I added a DRO to my Mill was for the radius function and the bolt hole pattern function. Aside from that even with it I still find myself setting my dials. How’s the saying go, can’t teach an old dog new tricks.
And for milling angles & radius features . Watched Stephan Gotteswinter the other day ! 👍
Happy days Max, g'day mate, welcome to the 21st century lol. Yeah the knowledge and skill in using dials should come first imho, that said I struggled like buggery when my lathe dro went down 😂
Cheers . Yes , i remember when your one went down ! 👍
@swanvalleymachineshop Yeah I was like a spastic ffs lol
Hey Max. You had the mig sizzling along well. The cranky arms might give me a camera stand idea. Regards. BC
Cheers Bernie . 👍

Very cool Max, looking forward to what you produce using it and more awesomeness coming in the future.
Happy days from the land of kiwis😂
Thanks 👍
Great video. Thanks. I was wondering if there was any reason in particular, that you started turning down the stock from left to right.
So the carriage was moving away from the rust cloud . Also , sometimes a long bit does not chatter that way . 👍
I need to make a set of arms for my future DRO on the HBM. Probably a winter project.
I figured it was the easiest place to start for the DRO mounting . 👍
Thanks Max 😁
No worries 👍
Half-way through the video and I am still clueless...
The penny will drop ! 👍
The Dro does make life a lot easier. I only had to mount the z axis scale, X& Y came on the machine.. Good onya
Cheers 👍

@swanvalleymachineshop Thank God for that!
Somethings in life you can't unsee ;) 6:55
Lol , you should have seen the rest of the calendar ! 👍
@@swanvalleymachineshop LOL
I twigged what you were making, but I didn't know what they were for. I thought they were to mount your video cameras on, lol. That's because I haven't got any DRO's. Cheers, Max, entertaining.......Tony
Cheers Tony . 👍
Flash as a rat with a gold tooth!! It should halve your time for making stuff ... Gove's your eyes a rest ... Great stuff thanks for your time
Lol , cheers . 👍
Max that was great . that rust dust isn't good for the old nose ither JM
Not good for anything ! Cheers 👍
Nice DRO my friend. Well deserved
Thanks . It should make life a bit easier on the BP ! 👍
Im guessing if the power goes down, you probably won't be using the mill.
It's first job was done with no power , Hand slotting a boring bar ! 👍
Ah !! SOUTH paw....really way down south too !!! LOL
Cheers 👍
Steve Summers, Brian Bloc, Always Sunny in the Shop, and Steve Watkins have all done videos on the DRO and I believe three of them had to modify to set the rulers on.

When are the Kranky Kalendars coming out???
Lol , food for thought ! 👍

@swanvalleymachineshop you can make 1 with cow hide, not a glove but leather shield with hand grip.
Many dangers. There's always another way to do it.
Are you a metal god? Which one of the Olympians were you? Aphrodite's brother? Cheers Max.
Lol , Thanks Rob . 👍

Hate to bring this up Max but if you have a power cut your Bridgeport is buggered too. 😂
Not if you are hand slotting ! That was it's first job , before the thing was even powered up . 👍
Hi Max Power cut no DRO who turning the motor 😅.
