" her body in the moonlight overthrew you ". I cannot imagine a more poetic expression of loveliness. I heard that line near 30 years ago and the impression it gave hasn't lost a bit of the magic.....when I was young I was deeply in love with an island girl while stationed in Guam and a night we were walking along the western shore, a full moon was low on the horizon. Without a doubt the sight of her standing at water's edge a bright silver carpet starting where she stood lay across the oceans subtle ripples her in a summer dress the full moon serving but for one purpose. I've lived in the South Pacific and up and down the west coast, I've traveled a lot, so many beautiful sights. Yet nothing has come close to that one moment I knew even then that I was given a once in a lifetime gift. I saw beautiful at it's absolute most beautiful.
+That Guy Who Knows Song Names Wherever there's love, hate and sorrow will always be just one step away. Take good care of love or sorrow or hate will consume you
I was thinking how this song was sang by Chester Bennington at the Chris Cornell's funeral. And now the three of them are dead. It's so sad. For me this version is the best. RIP Jeff, RIP CHRIS, RIP Chester.
Why do i feel like this song is about a guy or a rockstar who gone thru alcohol and alot of girls and for the first time he met a diff girl and they made love and Hallelujah is just substitute for " Oh my GOD"
"It's not a cry you hear at night, It's not someone who's seen the light. Its a cold and its a broken Hallelujah." Fuck..... when you're down on your knees trying to call out to any God that's up there but it only comes out as a broken squeak.... damn....
Regarding whether this is a "Christian song"...as others have said, it's about David and Bathsheba from the Bible, which is a story about perverse "love". She was married and apparently bathed on the roof of her house and David saw her. She shouldn't have been doing that, and he should have immediately turned away, but he believed his "faith was strong" and he "needed proof" -- either that he was strong enough to resist, or that she was a beautiful as she seemed, or both -- and of course allowing the temptation enough time to sprout, it got the best of him. He succumbed to his lust for her, and after getting her pregnant, tragedy touched the lives of everyone involved. There is a part of the song that talks about how she drew a "Hallelujah" out of him while "in the act", which is probably Cohen noticing how people often scream OMG when doing it, and so he appears to be focusing on that ironic fact...people call out God's name when they are in the middle of doing something they should definitely not be doing. This song is about the irony of calling it "making love" when real love often has nothing to do with it. David loved God and God loved him, but that love was damaged by something often called "love" but which is really something else. Real love heals, it doesn't damage and destroy. Cohen is focusing in a nebulous way on the ironies related to love. The line about "she cut your hair" is a reference to another Bible story, Samson and Delilah, where Delilah accused Samson of not loving her because he wouldn't tell her the secret of his strength (which was due to his hair never having been cut--he was a Nazarite), when the only reason she wanted to know was so she could betray him. She used love as a pretense to exercise betrayal and hatred. That idea of weaponizing "love" is what Cohen is getting at in the lines "But all I've ever learned of love is how to shoot somebody who outdrew you." Cohen mixes the S&D reference into the D&B storyline because it is a similar theme, of perverse, false, and broken love. The lines "there was a time when you let me know what's really going on below" refers to the strong relationship David had with ':Elohhiym (God) before his great sin, when YHWH guided his way and kept him safe from his enemies, and the following line "...but now you never show that to me, do you?" refers to the change in their relationship afterwards. Feeling betrayed, God stopped guiding David's path. David realizes that even though YHWH had given him victory over his enemies, that "love is not a victory march". Love isn't strengthened much by good times; rather it manifests its greatest strength when the chips are down. If I am reading Cohen's intent correctly, saying "love is a cold and broken hallelujah" is saying that love isn't "the heat of passion", but it is the shame, remorse, and regret that leads to repentance and the reestablishment of real love. David remembers the good times: "Remember when I moved in you" refers to the fact that until he sinned, everything David did was according to YHWH's will and Spirit (the holy dove)...everything, even every breath, was to the praise of God--Hallelu Yah means "Praise YaH!" So, it isn't directly a Christian song--especially since Cohen, who wrote the song, was Jewish; his last name, Cohen comes from the Hebrew word for "priest"--but it draws on the Bible (specifically the Tanakh, i.e. the OT) and attempts to use David's story to put forward the idea that love isn't really the Westernized Hollywood Romance crap that we've been sold ("it's not a cry that you hear at night"). It's something that is more precious, and delicate, and worthy of protecting, even to the point and especially when the love is damaged and grows cold, because the real thing is worth it. Sadly, it's something that often isn't appreciated until its been trashed.
"Maybe there's a God above, but all I've ever learned from love is how to shoot somebody who outdrew you" literally a clear representation of a relationship gone stale
@@bjbaratti1 Yes, it "exceeds." In this song, the man "rises" above his desires for love /lust for woman to ...love for God. ALL human relationships bring heartache sooner or later (death, divorce, breakups, etc) but Father NEVER fails in His eternal love.
All these people arguing over the intended meaning, but isn't this the beauty of music? We all will hear and interpret it differently. That is art, and beautiful.
Hum Hallelujah by Fall Out Boy brought me here. Pete Wentz, the bassist, tried to kill himself to this song playing on the radio by overdosing on Atavan in a Best Buy parking lot. This song saved his life instead. He made a few phone calls and they got there in time. The song has a line that goes,"Hum Hallelujah, just off the key of reason." The key of reason is C Major which Hallelujah is in. In the bridge of Hum Hallelujah, they sing the "hallelujah, hallelujah" part in D Major, which is just off the key of reason, C Major. Clever, isn't it?

Laura Barrie very true. Many artists laugh at what so called experts write when dissecting their music. Sometimes it's just words and instruments but that is all that is needed to emphasise a certain feeling that strikes a cord in us. Anyway, I sing it best ;)

JEFF BUCKLEY ALWAYS HAS AND ALWAYS WILL SING THIS SONG THE BEST BECAUSE OF HIS EMOTIONAL TIE TO THIS SONG AND U CANNOT GET MORE THAN THIS FROM AN ARTISIT.
@The Galactic Senate of the Republic ...Wrong...he was NOT drunk or HIGH. He had boots on & got sucked under from tow of passing boat in the MS River. The MS River is HUGE & DANGEROUS! I live near it.
Arabella Ophelia it's a reality check. saying hallelujah is easy. Meaning it without saying it out loud not even knowing to what God because you just heard your child has cancer (for example)
Si riferisce al tormento di Re Davide che perse la testa per Betsabea, moglie del soldato Uria. descrive la passione per lei che lo incatena a se e il pentimento per aver mandato a morire il fedele soldato... (2Samuele 11)
This song has so many interpretations, that's part of why i love it. Buckley's version is seeped in sexual tension that it is hard to miss. Not sure if somebody else posted but here is what Leonard Cohen says himself. Here are some quotes from Leonard Cohen that may shed some light on this question and give us some interesting perspectives about the meaning of this song: “I wanted to get into this tradition of the composers who said “Hallelujah”, but with no precisely religious point of view.” “It’s, as I say, a desire to affirm my faith in life, not in some formal religious way, but with enthusiasm, with emotion” (Leonard Cohen interview, 1985). “I wanted to write something in the tradition of the hallelujah choruses but from a different point of view”(Leonard Cohen interview, 1995). The traditional “Hallelujah” is an ancient word of prayer, used for expressing a person’s or a nation’s gratitude, love and loyalty to their lord - calling out: “Let’s all praise the lord”. Cohen wanted to be - in some way - a continuer of this tradition, although it would be independent of any religious framework .Cohen has a new way, a new meaning for the “Hallelujah”. He wants to call out his own “Hallelujah” to the Lord, to the world and to life. “There is a religious Hallelujah, but there are many other ones .When one looks at the world and his proper life there’s only one thing to say, it is ‘Hallelujah’ “. “The Hallelujah, the David’s Hallelujah, was still a religious song. So I wanted to indicate that Hallelujah can come out of things that have nothing to do with religion”. “And then I realize there is a Hallelujah more general that we speak to the world, to life”. (Leonard Cohen interviews, 1985 - 1988)
I have like six different versions of this beautiful song in m playlist and I just can't say which is the best one. There are so many awesome artists out there.
Oh, sure, Rachel Angelia! Sorry, I thought I answered that once! :) (Jeff Buckley) Scala John Cale Leonard Cohen Bon Jovi Rufus Wainwright Lol, it actually are six, lol!
what I love about this song is that everyone relates to it. no matter what theyre going through. it wasnt meant to bring argunents from the reason. it was to bring everyone together. people thinks is biblical. some people things its sexuality and some people think its sex. no matter what perspective the lyrics fit perfectly. thats what I find the most beautoful stickibg part of this song.
itsjustskye Eh, this might sound pretentious but I think everybody has got this song wrong if they they think there are different stances to take about it. Taking any stance like it “its about sex”, “its about heartbreak”, “its about christianity” is wrong because this song encompasses all of those things. The song is about how in the midst of all that makes up our journey through this world(ex. love, sex, loneliness, suffering)each and every one is reason to cry out hallelujah. The emotional core that drives this song is magnified when you realize that even that metaphysical action is a source of struggle, because clearly the lyrics depict doubt in faith. Perhaps in that struggle also, the song finds even more abstract meaning in the perpetual cycle that comes from the blind Hallelujahs that rise from the yearning of the soul conflicting with the reaction of the worldly connections of the mind.
Couldn’t agree more. Jess was an amazing artist, I could listen to him play the guitar all day and night. It’s a very deep song. Many take it differently. Should be marked for the best artist known. RIP Jeff!
+ItsAChrisProduction it isn't about god as such, and as you said it uses biblical references but the original song was written about king David...(what the main two verses are based off)
Jeff Buckley died at age 30 and had 1 or 2 albums. For those who like the Shrek or Penatonix version that's fine. But like many others Buckley defined the meaning of this song with the passion and heart. Just when he was reaching his highest peak in popularity, he drowned in the Mississippi river not having any drugs or alcohol in his system. This tragedy still left us one of the greatest song cover if not the most passionate of all time. RIP Jeff Buckley and thanks!
Love cannot conquer the heart with selfish pride. Faith cannot conquer the soul with melancholy fear. Evil cannot conquer the mind with justifiable righteousness. Hallelujah ! A blessing from the Lord that we've broken and left out in the cold.
***** yes he is. King David was also the musician who wrote most of the pslams. He also saw Bathsheba bathing while he was walking on the palace roof. She was married to one of his soldiers who was off fighting in war, he slept with her, got her pregnant, killed her husband and the baby died.
***** this is a Leonard Cohen song about true spiritual love. Not sex. And it was written with 80 verses and did go heavily into Christian salvation. Regardless of your personal thoughts on christianity, it's the most romantic faith. It's inspired more poetry and lyrics than anything in human history. He doesn't use any biblical texts, simply references to biblical histories and concepts of rebirth, salvation and divine love.
***** No. Christianity is the only faith where God condescending Himself to a human and died to save us. Took our punishment upon Himself. And it's the only faith where we are refered to as His bride. The marriage relationship in our faith is a reflection of Christ and His church (the born again believers). Ours is the only faith where God rescues us. "I am my beloved, and my Beloved is mine". This song isn't about sex. It's about love.
2:03 That is talking about Samson in the bible. Samson had divine powers given by God and the source of his powers were in his ponytail. That was, until Samson's girlfriend cut his hair to rid him of his powers (Or at least, that's what I remember. It has been a while since I've read the bible)
I REALLY don't believe in God (even though I was raised in a family that believed him.. So I get the references in this song) but this song is amazing to me..
Ya but ill bet you had faith in him when you were young... Now your just following the leader because obv its to uncool to have faith in something bigger...
guys, you don't need to be so rude. That's ridiculous. It doesn't matter if he believes in God or not. I believe in God (not in the Catholic one, I think, but I believe in one) and, in first place, I know that He told us to be kind to everyone, so it's really dumb of you tell him shit just because he is atheist. You don't know him. You can't just tell him he's wrong and assume he's just trying to be cool or something. I couldn't just tell you that God it's just a imaginary friend and you just 'believe' in him to be accepted by society as well. You're just being a dickhead
Calling other people retarded or illiterate monkey for no reason is a really dumb thing to do too. For God's sake, you doesn't even know him! People that distributes hate like this isn't worth arguing, so it's better ignore it. God, how can strangers tell shit to someone like this? You're not defending a religion. You're just being jerks. The less religious jerks on hearth. You can't even be kind and love people like the bible says you should, so just shut up
Holy shit. A girl I was with years ago who wrecked what was left of me after I got home from war: she tried to turn me on to this song forever but I blew it off... What a mistake. Stunning.
Why are you saying it's by Jeff Buckley? He recorded this version, but he didn't write it and he wasn't the first to perform it. That was the great Leonard Cohen, on both counts.
leonard cohen never sung it it like he meant it ,when jeff sung it ,it was like he meant it and every word was true for what is music if it has no meaning or story behind it ?
CiaranM01 Which version by Cohen have you listened to? The original, from _Various Positions,_ is incredibly soulful. I agree that music without meaning and story is hardly worthwhile, and Cohen's one of the all-time great lyricists by that standard.
CiaranM01 By the original studio version I assume you mean _Various Positions._ I thought he released it a second time with some changes (for instance, substituting "Well maybe there's a god above . . . " for "I did my best, it wasn't much . . . ") but I can't seem to find it on his discography. I didn't care for the rerelease. But while I certainly respect your opinion, I find it hard to imagine that someone could listen to the _Various Positions_ track and find it unconvincing.
I have never heard this version in church but this is by far my favorite. It's that truth that everyone is broken and that's when we find the best of ourselves and at my low I met Jesus Christ not at my highest.
I would like to dedicate this song to my mom she is 99 nobody in the family really cares but I do.ive been taking care of her for over 20 years my brothers do nothing but I dont care I will always be there for her.
From how I interpret it, this song is about someone who at first questions what love is. That someone then finds "the love of their life", but soon comes to realise that love isn't what they seemed. It isn't something you should joke about. They find out that love isn't like cupid shooting you with an arrow or how love is more complicated than positive at first. Love is either something you learn on your own, or it's something you will never find out. I honestly think that this song proves to me that there is no specific definition of love. That's something you must define yourself.
Hi, I'm French, so sorry for my bad English. I really would like an opinion : I passionately love singing, but my sister said me that I have a bad voice, so I couldn't sing. But my dream is to participate to The voice 7 in France. What can I do ? Help me, please !
OMG my friend is singing this right now for me im telling u she is NOT the best singer in the world but hey she is trying!!!! if she reads this im dead but I think she is a amazing singer in my eyes!!!!!!!!!!!!!! XD
For anybody who wants to know what Hallelujah means, it’s praise be to the most high, the last 3 words Jah is referencing God Which Jah is the short version of God name that he gave to Moses. Hallel is basically means praises, or songs.

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
Your faith was strong, but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya
She tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
Baby, I've been here before

I used to live alone before I knew ya
And I've seen your flag on the marble arch
And love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
There was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me, do you?
But remember when I moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was hallelujah
Hallelujah, hhallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
Maybe there's a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya
And it's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

"She tied you to her kitchen chair. She broke your throne, cut your hair. And from her lips she drew the hallelujah." Daaang, this song is kinky.
Arrow All of Leonard Cohen's songs are kinky. Try I'm Your Man.
+Elie Kayrouz naw it talks about a mom didnt she cut your hair when you where little
Chance Blevins
hehehe. she did.
Chance Blevins I really highly doubt that
Arrow its about Samson of the bible
JEFF BUCKLEY ALWAYS HAS AND ALWAYS WILL SING THIS SONG THE BEST BECAUSE OF HIS EMOTIONAL TIE TO THIS SONG AND U CANNOT GET MORE THAN THIS FROM AN ARTISIT.
Absolutely. Agreed.
what emotional tie?? :o
The autopsy said he had no drugs or alcohol in his system.
@The Galactic Senate of the Republic ...Wrong...he was NOT drunk or HIGH. He had boots on & got sucked under from tow of passing boat in the MS River. The MS River is HUGE & DANGEROUS! I live near it.
What if, Freddie Mercury sang that?! DAMN.
what if jeff sang love of my life
It would be as good
It sounds like a Christian song, but it's not. It has Christian themes, but it isn't a Christian song.
Arabella Ophelia i dont think religion is relevant to that much. and the lyrics are a bit dark.
Arabella Ophelia Louder for those in the back.
Its kinda sad how people only recognize this song from shrek . This is a well known song and its so beautiful .
Kaitlyn Pittsley I recognize the song from Lord of war
Kaitlyn Pittsley I have watched shrek tones of times with my daughter and I didn’t even notice it was on the movie
@@marysegura3005 same
But I mean shrek is beautiful
I recognise the song from OC 😂
This song has so many interpretations, that's part of why i love it. Buckley's version is seeped in sexual tension that it is hard to miss. Not sure if somebody else posted but here is what Leonard Cohen says himself.
Here are some quotes from Leonard Cohen that may shed some light on this question and give us some interesting perspectives about the meaning of this song:
“I wanted to get into this tradition of the composers who said “Hallelujah”, but with no precisely religious point of view.”
“It’s, as I say, a desire to affirm my faith in life, not in some formal religious way, but with enthusiasm, with emotion” (Leonard Cohen interview, 1985).
Thank you so much for this. I have been looking everywhere for the interpretation of this Hallelujah, and this makes perfect sense 😇
I have like six different versions of this beautiful song in m playlist and I just can't say which is the best one. There are so many awesome artists out there.

John Cale
Leonard Cohen

Rufus Wainwright
Lol, it actually are six, lol!
findusuli You should the one of Helmut Lotti.
I prefer this version iwth these lyrics.
what I love about this song is that everyone relates to it. no matter what theyre going through. it wasnt meant to bring argunents from the reason. it was to bring everyone together. people thinks is biblical. some people things its sexuality and some people think its sex. no matter what perspective the lyrics fit perfectly. thats what I find the most beautoful stickibg part of this song.
itsjustskye Eh, this might sound pretentious but I think everybody has got this song wrong if they they think there are different stances to take about it.
RIP Jeff!
The o.c. ❤️

I've been laughing at this for like ten minutes and idek why
+My Name's GlitterFace whats it from???
I laugh at the people who think this song is about God
ItsAChrisProduction -facepalm- It is
It uses biblical references
+ItsAChrisProduction it isn't about god as such, and as you said it uses biblical references but the original song was written about king David...(what the main two verses are based off)
+erin fitzgerald someone with sense comments 👏
ehe

yes man 👌
XD
+Nicholas Shields you will enjoy listening too... first of all learn some english
+Nicholas Shields lol ya man tf is her/his problem? hahah
God Lord, that last "....hallelujah...." he holds forever is not from this world.....
I'm really feeling this song. I listen to it everyday before I get my day started.
Love cannot conquer the heart with selfish pride. Faith cannot conquer the soul with melancholy fear. Evil cannot conquer the mind with justifiable righteousness. Hallelujah ! A blessing from the Lord that we've broken and left out in the cold.
This is the best version of them all
Dont know about the real meaning og the song. To me its about broken love.... hmmm... it hurts me and reminds me of old memories of ex girlfriend..
+nohomo ibetyoukissgirlsfgt

+nohomo ibetyoukissgirlsfgt Ouch! Shrek huh?

Jay Yothanan Thank
+Chris Griffin Always a pleasure
He talks about David and Bathsheba, Samson, and many other biblical stories
It's about butt secks.
+xxxxJULIOxxxx eff u just eff u
2:03 That is talking about Samson in the bible. Samson had divine powers given by God and the source of his powers were in his ponytail. That was, until Samson's girlfriend cut his hair to rid him of his powers (Or at least, that's what I remember. It has been a while since I've read the bible)
Michelle Sabatino I just wasn't sure if it was his girlfriend who did it or if it actually was Samson himself
Delilah
Nitin Luthra That was his girlfriend's name? Like I said, it has been a while since I have read that book of the bible.
Jayman2800 actually, samson did not understand that the power was from God and thought it was his hair being long,
asdaw adwaw Ah
This was my pappys song.. I miss you so much pappy 4-5-16 😢.
Kaytays World papi chulo
I REALLY don't believe in God (even though I was raised in a family that believed him.. So I get the references in this song) but this song is amazing to me..
Ya but ill bet you had faith in him when you were young... Now your just following the leader because obv its to uncool to have faith in something bigger...
BigRick31688 Hmm no I stopped believing in him after I started liking science a lot I can do independent thinking dumbass
BigRick31688 I just told you I stopped believing over independent thinking and me discovering and loving science
guys, you don't need to be so rude.
You can't even be kind and love people like the bible says you should, so just shut up
I love this song so much, that this is probably my fav song
Oh, you're not religious, but you still like this song? Please, tell me more. You're so interesting.
2:53 - 3:04 This part makes me wanna cry so badly. You can hear the pain in his voice ;(
That was the great Leonard Cohen, on both counts.
he probably meant it was performd by jeff buckley. personally my fav version tho
leonard cohen never sung it it like he meant it ,when jeff sung it ,it was like he meant it and every word was true for what is music if it has no meaning or story behind it ?
CiaranM01
Which version by Cohen have you listened to? The original, from _Various Positions,_ is incredibly soulful. I agree that music without meaning and story is hardly worthwhile, and Cohen's one of the all-time great lyricists by that standard.
aperson22222 The original studio version i just never feel anything when Leonard sings ,it just never hits me the same .
CiaranM01
By the original studio version I assume you mean _Various Positions._ I thought he released it a second time with some changes (for instance, substituting "Well maybe there's a god above . .
This is not a religious song
Rest in peace master Jeff
His deep voice got me goosebumps!!
I would like to dedicate this song to my mom she is 99 nobody in the family really cares but I do.ive been taking care of her for over 20 years my brothers do nothing but I dont care I will always be there for her.
Is she nearing 100 now?

This was my wifes favorite song, I remember introducing it to hr when she was 17, I wish I would have known how much it would have meant to me
Shrek stopping the marriage of Fiona
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah 💔💔💔💔
I can't stop listening to this song, I love it! Praise the Lord /God /Jehovah /Yahweh whatever you know him as
To be honest. I heard this song when I was five in shrek and whenever I hear this song. I always think about shrek
I love this song so much I listened to it about a million times today.
I remember as a tribute to the Boston Marathon bombings they played this song in Fenway Park, and TD Garden
I thought it was a 40 second pause 🤔
😩😩😂😂
42 second pause, the answer to life the universe and everything
Ok I love the song. But who the fuck bathes on a roof 😂
Hi, I'm French, so sorry for my bad English. I really would like an opinion : I passionately love singing, but my sister said me that I have a bad voice, so I couldn't sing. But my dream is to participate to The voice 7 in France. What can I do ? Help me, please !
The songs is about King David biblical account
Nice touch on that 42 seconds part.
Lyrics:
Are on the screen dummy

this song was sang at my grandmother's funeral. it was her favourite song
hering this make feel chiken skin
Lots of people came from shrek but I came from a gay fanfic.
Great song btw.
For anybody who wants to know what Hallelujah means, it’s praise be to the most high, the last 3 words Jah is referencing God Which Jah is the short version of God name that he gave to Moses. Hallel is basically means praises, or songs.
David and Bathsheba....Never mind I was wrong...And This has been going on since the dawn of time...
if your ever singing this song jump up an octave on the 4th "hallelujah", its so good :)
Agree
